A small hotel in the Santa Teresa area of Rio. Extraordinarily helpful owner and staff. Marvelous interior courtyard-common room, where we had delicious breakfasts, well decorated with paintings and sculpture by local artists.

Casa Aurea was a great find and I definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a very laid-back, relatively quiet stay in an interesting pousada in an interesting Rio neighborhood. It's a gem within Santa Teresa, which is very different from the Zona Sul, and a neighborhood I loved! The staff at the pousada were very friendly, relaxed, and helpful,...

Agree with the 5 star reviews - very friendly, informal, great for meeting people. Location in the baiiro of Santa Teresa is an excellent alternative to the usual beach accommodation. By European standards, the accommodation is almost laughably cheap.

On several trips to Brazil we avoided Big cities. This time we decided to spend some time in Rio. Our choice for Casa Aurea turned out to be a very good one. It has a charming atmosphere with the beautifull wooden furniture, most of it made by the landlord himself, and the many pieces of art everywhere present in the...

This is a great base for exploring Santa Teresa, Centro (downtown), and neighboring districts of Rio. The environment is very relaxing and mellow. When you walk in, there is a large outdoor patio area with hammocks, sofas, and tables, where free coffee is available all day long. You can also grab a beer or a soda on the honor system,...

I found Casa Aurea by chance and am happy that I had the pleasure to stay there. As soon as I stepped through the front door I felt really homely. I loved the interiors, the furniture, the rooms, the decorations. The owner and his staff are very welcoming and offering help/advise where ever possible. Santa Teresa is my favorite part...

Hugely comfortable beds, white sheets, white towels, free toiletries, iced water & coffee available all day, just lovely. Interesting decor, art on the walls, cool furniture, a very welcoming open space to hang in hammocks, relax, chat and just enjoy. Excellent help always, even ordering sushi for late night hunger pangs. I checked out lots of options in Rio, believe...

The time we had in Casa Aurea was wonderful. It is a beautiful hostel located in a calm district of Rio. It is clean, safe and the service is gorgeous. The owners are always friendly and you can ask for any kind of help. It is the kind of familiar driven hostel and for sure you will be integrated if...

I stayed here for four nights in October 2009. It's a very relaxing place and the neighbourhood is great - very quiet (apart from the morning dog chorus!) and by far the most interesting in Rio. The centre and the entertainment area of Lapa are both within walking distance, so long as you like hills. The tram is a five-minute...

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.
