after 15 days travelling from Chile, through Argentina to Rio I booked myself a 'nice' hotel to relax and enjoy - I chose the Mama Ruisa and I was not disappointed. Discreetly positioned down a Santa Teresa side street, it was like walking into another world.' warm welcome from the dapper French owner, and told 'breakfast is served until 12...

My wife and I traveled all over the world and it's almost impossible to find a place where you get an amazing location, great room, beautiful decor, with comfortable king size bed and most important, and The best service ever, paying attention to details. We recommend Mama Ruisa as the best place in Rio.

This is your perfect hotel if you need a time-off from... whatever you need time-off from. Everything here is made to please your eyes, from the design of the rooms to the green eyes of the house's cat. However it does not feel like one more design/hype/glossy hotel at all -- rather, it feels a bit like home. Little imperfections...

I visited this beautiful small property in the heart of Santa Teresa and was comletely overwhelmed by it. I did not stay there, but it must be like living in a small paradise if you do. It is so peaceful and beautifully decorated. The French owner definitely has a feel for a style and loves art. Do not pick a...

We stayed in Mama Ruisa for 2 nights at the start of our honeymoon and it was amazing. Really cute boutique hotel located in the gorgeous area of St Theresa. The rooms were gorgeous, the food was great and the staff went out of their way to make sure our stay was 5 stars. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for...

We had a fantastic time at Mama Ruisa, and I have a hard time calling it a "hotel" as it is very different experience from any other ones. The decoration is of very nice, and I understood very quickly that all pieces have been selected years after years by Jean Michel, which makes the atmosphere very special. We felt very...

This was our favourite hotel during our holiday in Brazil. The owners manage to create a relaxed atmosphere whilst still seeing to your every need. The hotel is beautifully designed with a few quirks that add to its charm. There are great views from many rooms and the lounge area. The breakfast was delicious. The neighbourhood is leafy and quiet...

The rooms are large and well appointed. The photo's I have seen really under sell the property not over sell [a nice change]. There are large open areas for you to share with other guests. You won't disturb them and they won't disturb you; if that is your inclination. Everything works, and works well; which I might add I am...

I could not have dreamed of a better experience, walking into Mama Ruisa on the first day of our honeymoon. All of the stress of our long flight instantly began to melt away even before our first caipirinhas arrived. As luck would have it, we stayed in the Carmen Miranda suite, overlooking the hills of Santa Teresa and Guanabara Bay...

This small hotel is dedicated to gracious service. We woke up to a lovely breakfast and ended each day with a dip in the pool. The staff is warm and helpful. Our room was large and comfortable with lots of light and air. We would definitely stay here again if we returned to Rio.

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.
