As good as everyone says. Great staff, location, small but good rooms, breakfast. Private taxi's stand outside and the staff know them. We hired a driver called Walter. Great English speaker. email; [-]. over 3 days he took us to Jesus, sugarloaf, city tour, cathedral, samba city, brazilian show and airport at a good rate and with good cheer. Souvenier stalls on...

All of the positive comments in the recent reviews are correct. It was a fine place for a 3 night stay in Rio (April 8 - 11 2008). Breakfast - excellent Staff - excellent Location - excellent Rooms - excellent ....you get the drift No free access internet which was the mildest of inconveniences. The front desk sent me to...

We stayed at the Martinique for about 4 nights and found the service to be fantastic. The front desk people were a little snooty but everyone else from the restaurant waiters to the maids to the doormen were above and beyond our expectations. At one point I lost an earring somewhere in the hotel and not only did they go...

Because of all the positive reviews at TripAdvisor we booked the Martinique Copa Hotel. There's not much to add to what has been already written: it's excellent value. Don't expect a view from your room, but the beach is only a minute away. The staff at reception is very friendly and will give all the information about how to get...

The Martinique Copa is a top-notch hotel located very close to Copacabana Beach, restaurants, bars, stores, pharmacies, ATM machines, buses and even has a space reserved for taxies in front of the hotel. The staff were expectionally professional and courteous; the breakfast buffet was varied and tasty; room service was not very expensive and delivery was timely; and hotel security...

Booked this hotel based on the reviews form tripadvisor and they lived up to my expectaions. There is no name above or on the hotel just a "W" on the wall , we got the 'real' air conditioned bus which drops you at copacabana but walked passed by the hotel twice on the opposite side of the road due to...

I stayed in this hotel for New Years and obviously paid quite a lot for the size of the room I got. The room was very small but pretty clean. The hotel is in a good location in Copacabana - about 50m walk from the beach. The staff were good and the breakfast was pretty good as well. The only...

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I've just recently booked up a holiday for Rio next March at the Windsor Martinique having wanted to visit for many years. Now I've been well aware of the problems with crime in the favellas and had no intention of visiting them. It is disturbing though that I've heard media reports of a sharp rise in tourist muggings and gangs of youths 'dragnetting' beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema. Buses from poor areas being stopped at roadblocks before entering the tourist zones and vigilante reprisals. This all sounds pretty awful now frankly

We are a couple in our 50s and 60s and are pasty skinned Scots hardly likely to pass for locals however hard we try to look like them. We will be staying at the Windsor Martinique hotel on the south end of Copacabana and I notice on google earth that there is a favella barely 400 yards away from us on a steep hill . I would very interested to hear of anyones recent experiences in this area? We would also like to go out at night for dinner but this is a definite no no according to the comments I've read elsewhere on the forum here.

The more I read here the more I'm dreading going and of telling my other half what I've discovered because this was my idea in the first place ! Brazil will be our 50th country and Rio one of the 200+ cities we have visited including in many third world countries too. I'm a seasoned traveller but I cannot honestly say I've been quite as apprehensive about going to anywhere before having read right through this long thread and the many attached reports.

This is the last thing you want to know before going on holiday is that you will be a target :(
