The first thing to note is that this hotel is on the same road as a favlea! While thankfully we had no problems ourselves we probably would not have stayed here had we realised and there was certainly a lot of 'interesting characters' and police about as a result. Rio is notrious for bad hotels at extortionate prices - this...

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Martinique during Carnaval 2008...and it was fabulous. We booked with a tour group and about half of the group (50 or so) ended up staying across the street at Windsor's Mirimar Palace. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Martinique though. Though our Portuguese was terribly fractured the staff was pleasant and accomodating. The...

It's a fair deal for the price you are paying and you can't really complain. I've stayed in better in Rio but at the same time I have spent a lot more. I think the other reviews are fair and I would return.

We had a seven week tour of South America in August and September 2008 and stayed at a number of hotels and hostals and this one was one of the best. We stayed here 3 nights and it was great, the hotel is in a good location close to Copacabana Beach. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the...

Nice place near the beach. Good breakfast and free WiFi, although it didn't work in the room, just the roof.

We spent six nights here and found it excellent. Well located for all the sights, quiet room with the most powerful shower, first class breakfast buffet, helpful staff. The area is fine and we used public transport to get everywhere day and night (Sugar Loaf, Christ The Redeemer, Lapa, Maracana etc) and felt safe. Well recomended

My husband and I actually stayed at this hotel twice during a recent trip to Brazil. We booked the room using Expedia and got a wonderful rate (less than USD100 a night) for a standard room, which they unexpectedly upgraded to a superior room when we checked in. The staff was constantly kind and gracious like that throughout our stay,...

I loved the location of the hotel being only half a block off Copacabana beach but I can't believe it was rated #2 in Rio. All the other reviews are dead on in as far as: the rooftop pool is little more than a bathtub the bellman tried to rip me off catching a cab back to GIG airport it...

Good value hotel for Rio. Very good location for beach and tube. We were given a room without a window which I did not like, however the hotel was full. The staff did try to make us comfortable but I would not stay in that type of room again. Breakfast was very good. Its not really a rooftop pool but...

We made the reservation through www.yeego.com and got the best price for the hotel. We ask for a Supirior room and get room number 703 which had the best view at this hotel. The rooms are small, but have all you need. Great breakfast, close to everywhere, Internet free conection at the rooms etc.

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.

I've just recently booked up a holiday for Rio next March at the Windsor Martinique having wanted to visit for many years. Now I've been well aware of the problems with crime in the favellas and had no intention of visiting them. It is disturbing though that I've heard media reports of a sharp rise in tourist muggings and gangs of youths 'dragnetting' beach areas like Copacabana and Ipanema. Buses from poor areas being stopped at roadblocks before entering the tourist zones and vigilante reprisals. This all sounds pretty awful now frankly

We are a couple in our 50s and 60s and are pasty skinned Scots hardly likely to pass for locals however hard we try to look like them. We will be staying at the Windsor Martinique hotel on the south end of Copacabana and I notice on google earth that there is a favella barely 400 yards away from us on a steep hill . I would very interested to hear of anyones recent experiences in this area? We would also like to go out at night for dinner but this is a definite no no according to the comments I've read elsewhere on the forum here.

The more I read here the more I'm dreading going and of telling my other half what I've discovered because this was my idea in the first place ! Brazil will be our 50th country and Rio one of the 200+ cities we have visited including in many third world countries too. I'm a seasoned traveller but I cannot honestly say I've been quite as apprehensive about going to anywhere before having read right through this long thread and the many attached reports.

This is the last thing you want to know before going on holiday is that you will be a target :(
