As first time in Che lagarto copacabana hostel and as first experience there .. I would like to say that I’ve enjoyed my stay there .. good vibes and wonderful atmosphere and you can have tons of friends as you are a solo traveler .. for me I haven’t had any problem at all during my stay in that hostel as I stayed for 10 days which is enough to see any problems.. hostel is close to copacabana beach about 3 blocks .. value for money as I see the hostel place to sleep only not to spend your life inside your room while you are in vacation
This was my second stay in Che Lagarto Copacabana. The Hostel is nice, the employees are friendly, competent and you will find people speaking at least portugues, espangol and some english. It's good located, the prices are hard to beat and the included breakfast as well as the caipirinha at the evening are a great offer! Always a pleasure to stay.
Was never so happy to be leaving a hostel. They don't turn the aircon on til 8pm. My room was basically in a basement so no airflow. Towels not available to rent. Tiny kitchen that is like a sauna when cooking. No lighter to light the gas rings (had to ask a staff member for their own lighter). No to handle hot pots/pans (had to use my own towel) Terrible wifi. Music blaring at reception from morning til night. Very average breakfast. Staff were nice people but extremely slow/inefficient. Bathrooms are extremely small and cramped. There seemed to be a guy permanently living in my dorm that got up around 8pm every day to go out and sell stuff at night. He came in around 6am every morning and then snored like a horse for about 12 hours.
We were a bit disappointed considering the "big name" this hostel has in Rio. The showers are cold for starts. The main issue we had is that the aircon is controlled centrally so doesn't turn on until 8pm. We had an afternoon rest in the room and was absolutely sweltering, you could barely stand to be in the room. Couldn't open the doors too long as room fills with mosquitoes (no fly screen). Also we had a private room for a couple but had single bunk beds (bit weird?) The rooftop bar area had a weird vibe, pumping Latino music at absolutely full volume early in the night so struggled to even chat to other people. Pretty disappointed by this hostel They booked tours for us which were good so I can recommend that
From all the che lagarto hostals we visited, this one was the one we didnt love. The location is amazing as is close to copacabana beach and nossa senhora de copacabana avenue (where you can buy almost anything). The cooling of the room was not working, its was more like a fan, and trust me, it doesn’t help when its 40 degrees outside. Its decent though so you can still visit and be ok if you are on a budget. Nice staff
I stayed two nights in this hostel and it was okay. The staff is nice and helpful. The location is great, very close to the beach and restaurants. Otherwise, the general atmosfere is cold, some decoration or some sofa in the entrance could be nice . The rooftop terrace is amazing, but could be better exploited (music, breakfast or bar...) Anyway it's a hostel to recommend for travellers on a budget but could be a really amazing hostel if the general environment was more friendly
I went to Che Lagarto in 2016 as part of a G-Adventures experience. I stayed here for two weekends in between living in a nearby favela. I arrived alone in Rio but my luggage didn't! When I arrived at the hostel, they couldn't do enough to help me find it. They lent me their phones, spoke in Portuguese to the airport staff and searched online to help me - it was returned within 24hours and I was so grateful to them. They arrange great trips, advise restaurants and are just helpful people. Although the dorms can be loud at nights, mine was clean and for the money I was happy with my short stay.
Backpackers will never regret about staying in this hostel. Good value, nice location, helpful and fun staff to help travelers with anything they may need, nice cold beers at the bar, perfect if you are traveling alone.
This hostel is nice because of the position: it's close to Copacabana and the metro line. There are a lot of things to eat for breakfast and the reception is nice! Rooms were clean, but the common washrooms were Always dirty.
It's quite average hostel, a bit overpriced in my opinion. Some rooms are extremely small. The capacity of the hostel is more than 100 people, but the kitchen can hardly contain more than 2. Breakfast isn't great as well. Pricing is very weird and seems quite random. I booked for 2 nights first, and then extended twice, every time for 2 more nights. Price was different every time. And my friend who booked online for the same dates as me paid more than I did. Location is good, 5 minutes walk to the beach. I give this hostel 4 out of 5 just because of its staff. People working there are awesome. Very nice, friendly and helpful no matter what.
