The hotel rooms are - as described below, dumpy and outdated. The service is great. The food is great. The gym is convenient. The pool is nice enough and could do with a refit. The location is amazing. All the reviews below are pretty right. All in all it’s a nice place just don’t expect amazing rooms.
Presumably the JW brand is at the top end of the Marriott chain. But in no way does this hotel live up to this claim other than maybe location though all five star hotels in Rio are right on the beach. The corridors smell um leasant and my room smelled worse still. The hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment. I had a room with sea view on a high floor. I imagine if you do not have a view this place us truly depressing. The only reason I gave two stars rather than just one is because of the staff who all try really hard to make the experience a better one, very friendly and professional. My conclusion: avoid.
I just stayed there in March 2022 and I would definitely not call this hotel a 5-star hotel. The pictures look a lot nicer than the hotel is. When I arrived my hotel room was not clean. I found a clump of hair in the shower and the staff did nothing to accommodate me. When I was checking out, I still was unable to speak with the manager so I said they could email me about the bill and instead of hearing from the manager, they just charged me the full amount.
The Marriot is in my opinion in one of the the best locations in Rio. Set right on the beach in Copacabana, what more could you ask for. The service is amazing, the staff are brilliant. I want to practise my Portuguese more but every time I spoke the staff could easily tell I was a foreigner and would talk fluently in English, how ever since my wife is Brazilian she always does most of the talking when we holiday in Brazil. The rooms are great, serviced daily, the roof top area is brilliant with a little gym to suit your holidays needs. The restaurant service is 10 out of 10 however - the only negative we experienced every morning at the buffet breakfast every staff member is so lovely bar one waitress, no matter how polite you are to her, good morning, please, thank you she was so very rude every day Apart from that, one staff member wasn't going to bother our stay - we would come back in a heart beat :)…
I’m a lifetime Gold Elite member and this experience was very poor. The hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment. The whole floor smelled damp and the carpets were dirty and torn. Our suite room had no natural sunlight, was claustrophobic, shower and sink didn’t drain properly, skirting boards were dirty and damaged, lamps and carpet were dirty and light in shower did not work properly. What really upset me though is that airport transfer from Galeao airport to the hotel was charged at R$400. For comparison, we stayed at the Copacabana Place 2 weeks later and were only charged R$190 for exactly the same journey during rush hour. This hotel definitely does not meet Marriott standards, let alone JW standards.
