My wife (Chinese b. 1974) and I (American b. 1942) spent one week in Pousada Favela Cantagalo - Jan. 1,2015 through Jan. 8, 2015. Our time there turned out to be one of the most wonderful experiences while traveling abroad. I knew about Brazilian "favelas" because I lived in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a teenager in the late 1950's...

We decided to book a room in a favela and I have to say that this was the best decision of our trip in Brazil. It is a lifetime experience! The staff are very helpful and friendly. Ask them for directions and where to eat. The location of the favela is excellent, next to the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches. The...

Having just returned from this location I can recommend this hotel unreservedly. I stayed there for 6 nights. The staff are all very friendly. Legia is very helpful, will book trips, let you know about parties on the favela or good places to eat or drink. The Road leading to the hotel (Rue Saint Roman) is just behind Copacabana beach...

We stayed at the pousada 5 nights in an annex. It was clean with lots of space and AC. The owner was wery helpfull and organized a great football tour at Macarana stadium. We felt wery safe at all times, even late night. People in the favela was freindly and smiled to us. If you stay in a regular room,...

I can´t say that the seaview provided at the pousada´s rooftop is smth to die for (it´s nice though!), but if u r looking for an absolutely authentic stay in Rio, that´s the right variant! Avoid it if u have medical problems with the heart, respiratory system and joints - u´ll have to cover MANY stairs. The favela itself is...

I stayed a night here with my friend on 3rd of April '13. I hadn't realized beforehand that we would have to climb many many many steps up in order to reach the pousada, which was a big problem because we both had a huge suitcase and a backpack each for our long trip. It was nearing midnight, rather dark...

We arrived at the favela late at night which was a bit of a shock to the system to say the least! Two blonde girls travelling on their own and you get some attention from the locals. The pousada itself is clean and welcoming with a lovely breakfast and rooms with a view, though very basic, are good value for...

Anyone up for an amazing new experience need look no further. Great staff - you will love Ligia (the owner) and Fabiane, two people I will remember for a long time. Spotless no-frills accommodation (I stayed in the annexe). A superb breakfast, with homemade food (eggs, linguiça sausage, quiche, cakes) with a view of Rio from the terrace to die...

Yes, you will be living in a favela. But once you get there you'll soon realise that you're in the nice part. The part where there are little kids out playing with their kites and laughing all day. Don't stress too much about the safety aspect, it was lovely, if a little dirty/smelly on the streets. One word of warning...
