We were two females travelling solo in Brazil and we stayed at Villa Santa Teresa for two nights in April 2022. We had the best stay. The Villa is beautiful. Beautiful furnishings, rooms, gardens and pool area. The views over Rio are incredible. The staff are a credit to the Villa. Nothing was too much trouble. Juan in particularly was absolutely fantastic. He even took us down to his favourite sunset spot one night in the Villa’s vegetable gardens. It was perfect! The breakfast was sublime. Lots of fruit, meats and cheeses offered. Our only minor gripe would be that to have some of the more fancy breakfast options there is a nominal extra charge. This seems quite unusual given the price of the accommodation. The Villa is relatively remote in a secure compound in the hillside of Santa Teresa. It can be difficult to find but follow the route shown on the website and the taxis will be able to find it easily. The Villa are great at ordering taxis for you in and out of Santa Teresa and beyond and there is a dedicated guest whatsapp during your stay which we found particularly useful. We also had dinner one night. It was one of our best meals in Rio. Definitely worth eating at the restaurant on site one evening. It by far exceeded our expectations and other guests we spoke to had eaten there many times too and loved it.

Very poor reservation service. I booked my room and secured it with my credit card and receive an email overnight simply stating my reservation was cancelled without any explanation. I have been trying to reach the hotel by phone and keep being told that "reservations arrives around 10 AM" and by email and get no answer. Meanwhile we bought our plane tickets and will scramble to find another hotel. Beware or try somewhere else.

The drive to the hotel is very complicated and many drivers give up to bring you to and from Vila Santa Teresa. The Villa is around 50 year old and some interiors can be improved but the location is incredible as you can see from one point the whole Rio down and Christ the Redeemer statue! The restaurant serves really good french cuisine. The waiters nearly don’t speak any English but receiptionist lady is perfect in many languages and very freandly and helpful all the time! Would definitely recommend to stay or visit.

Serious safety incident
I went for a massage, BEWARE the masseuse sexually assaulted me. Please, if you are a women, do not get a massage from the bald man. It is not ok. I reported it to the hotel manager, but he did nothing. The hotel looks lovely and luxurious, but do not take the risk. You might think it is ok to begin with, but it is not. Please do not go there.

Response from Felipe R, Gerente geral at Vila Santa Teresa

Dear Alex, We are deeply sorry and still shocked about this situation. We have never had such accusations in our establishment. All our external wellness staff have years of experience with the hotel and are hired through trusted recommendations. The hotel has a very strict policy in which our manager followed through the moment you told him what had happened. When our manager returned to talk to you after following procedures and contacting the authority you had left the establishment with no notice and we could not follow through without testimony.

Vila Santa Teresa is precisesly that: a small luxurious hotel and spa in a villa on top of a hill overlooking Flamango and Botafogo, with views of the Bay and the Sugarloaf from the terrace next to the pool. The building resembles a private gentlemen's club, and the service is jus right. Our room, or apartment, was big and very well laid out, and the vila's restaurant served very nice and fresh breakfasts. A true gem!

From the moment I arrived, the view, the service, the accommodations, the weather, the whole experience was just wonderful. Extremely courteous staff made me feel very special, from the check-in to each meal to assistance with transportation or any little request. What a pleasure trip! This was a perfect spot for us at the end of an extensive tour of South America. A tranquil location, high above the city in Santa Teresa with stunning views and far from the madding crowd. The hotel was beautifully furnished and the staff's attention to detail was second to none. Breakfast on the patio, overlooking the city, was one we will not easily forget.

Stayed here for a few nights after arriving in South America. We chose the hotel for the views on the website, and the reality didn't disappoint. I think you would find it hard to choose a hotel with better views of Rio. It really is exceptional. Everything is top quality. The manager, Ursula, was superb. Always there to greet you when arriving back, and attentive to all of our needs. All of the staff were superb. You feel very secure here as well because the property is on a hill with gates manned by security guards. The history of the property is fascinating as well. Avoid the big hotels and try this out - you won't be disappointed. A few reviewers said they had difficulty with taxies finding it - wed didn't have a problem with any of the local taxies, but it has only been open 3 years, so this maybe is improving.

Vila Santa Teresa must have been a very beautiful home. It is set within extensive, beautiful, manicured private grounds on a secure estate high on a hill in Santa Teresa. I'm unsure how many rooms the house has, but not many, I would guess at 6 or 7. This is a true boutique hotel. The house is open plan and beautifully furnished, decorated and lit throughout. Breakfast was a pleasant buffet with extras to order. The view that the house commands of Botafogo, Guanabara Bay and the Sugarloaf is astounding and to my mind the extra for a room with that view was well worth it. You will need a car / taxi / uber if you are staying here, the climb up to the Vila is severe. That said, the Vila is well located for exploration of Santa Teresa, Centro and Lapa. That said, given that view, you may just want to lounge by the pool and look at it. Would definitely return.

On Nov 22 we arrived at Villa Santa Teresa and immediately realized that we had booked the wrong hotel. We were very disappointed by the location as this hotel is completely secluded from the town of Santa Teresa. Additionally, it was quite evident that the pool and surrounding area had not been cleaned in a while as they were dirty and unkempt. Subsequently, we asked the manager on duty if we could cancel our reservation and move to another hotel closer to town. He understood and agreed to refund our money and said he would confirm with Expedia. This never happened. I reached out to Villa Santa Teresa to rectify the situation and they won’t return my emails. I bought Expedia's travel guard insurance policy which was a complete waste of money. At this point, I am stuck with the fee for Villa Santa Teresa and my stay at another hotel which I would never have done had the manager on duty, Felipe Ruchiga, not met with us and assure us that we would not be charged. I would not recommend this property as it is not as it appears in the images and the management can’t be trusted.
