This small and cute guest house is hidden in the west part of Kyoto (easy accesible by city bus or subway). The house is designed in a tradition japanese way which is absolutely amazing. The staff is very helpful and kind. Our double room was very spacious, cozy and comfortable. Shared bathroom was exceptionaly clean. Near to the guest house,...

Would not recommend staying here if you have only a short time in Kyoto, even though its probably the best price you're going to get. We didnt experience any problems w/train noise or finding the place (in fact we never really heard the pinging and the JR folks at Uzemasa station know exactly where the guest house is and will...

Stayed at Bola Bola for 2 nights last week after reading the reviews on the tripadvisor web site. We absolutely had an awesome time in Japan and staying at this guesthouse was a really lovely experience. Very cute and homely. The owners are very nice as well. Had a wonderful breakfast at the nearby bakery, Welz !!! Thoroughly recommend this...

Stayed here for 3 nights and couldn't believe what a bargain it was. It was a really cute guesthouse with a kind and helpful owner. Found the room to be quite large as I was on my own, and there were 2 toilets and showers for guests to share so I never had to wait. Free use of a computer...

My partner and I stayed in Bola Bola for a week in Sept 08, and loved it. The location seemed a little daunting on paper, but once we were there it was no problem at all to find our way between Bola Bola and the tourist attractions. It was a few stops up from Kyoto station on a frequently running...

This guest house is run by a family who were incredibly nice and helpful. Our traditional-style rooms were well-prepared and clean. Also available were kitchen facility, laundry, small lounge, internet + wireless internet. This place is a good opportunity to get experience living in a typical urban household in Kyoto. Location is good but not great. It is close to...

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Japan. Our stay at the Guest House Bola Bola was very pleasant and memorable. We are a family of 4 ( 2 adults & 2 young children) and the hosts made every effort to accommodate our needs. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable. It is a traditional Japanese style...

This was probably the cutest guest house I have ever stayed at. The owners were super friendly, and my room was lovely and very traditional. The house generally was also very nice--the living room, kitchen, and little computer area were great. But most importantly, the owners saved my Kyoto trip - I evidently went (unknowingly) during the week when all...

This hostel was like my home away from home. My two travel partners and I stayed for 3 nights and got all our travel information from the owner, Haru-san. Everything is walking distance from this hostel-- we went to the 100 yen shop for souveniers, grocery store to cook, walked down to the bath house, walked to the markets and...

Our experience was very similar to the other review on this site. We stayed 2 nights and found the guest house to be clean with very friendly owners. Free internet, a small common room and the kitchen can be used as well. The only downside was the frequent bing-bing noise from the train crossing just behind the guest house, which...

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
