Bola bola is a nice guesthouse. A lot of coffe houses around and little shops/ food. Take the bus from the station. THAT WAY IT"S EASY to find bola bola. With the "old train/tram" easy to get to Arashiyama. There's a lot to do and to see. Ask for the map in the guesthouse. These are perfect for use. The...

We visited here in May 2010. We had 6 days in Japan on a flight stop-over and my husband wanted to see Kyoto. We only had two days in Kyoto. With a two year old. I decided we could only see one neighbourhood so we would stay somewhere affordable near Arashiyama or Northern Higashiyama. I picked Bola Bola. It's a...

The place was a little difficult to find at first but ample help was provided - you can ask for directions and help at the train station at Uzumasa and the staff will assist you. Careful where you are going! I entered the wrong way and was greeted by the fierce looking family dog. =) The owner is a nice...

We stayed at Bola Bola guest house in march 2009 and i think we will always remember this place. The home is a real ryokan, the owner very helpful and nice. first we thought that the location is a little bit far away from kyoto city center, but after visiting bamboo forest, the best spa (onsen) i ever been and...

We spent two great nights in this pleasant guesthouse, sleeping in à traditionnal Japanese room. Our host was real welcoming, the hood is quiet and we just felt at home in his house. Not exactly in the centre of Tokyo, but we didn't regret our pick.

This honestly felt more like a hotel than a hostel. We didn't see any other guests but once in the early morning, and except when we arrived, we barely saw the owners. Said owners are very nice and speak excellent English, and the woman who greeted us gave us several helpful maps with nearby food and sightseeing spots. We were...

If you are looking for a real Ryokan experience, this is the place to go. Note that there is no heat and it gets very cold in winter. The shower room is the worst part of the house and the toilets are on the first floor. The owners are nice as long as you don't arrive too early in the...

We stayed in Kyoto in 2008 at Bola-Bola. It was great and everything we had hoped. It is very affordable, inviting family, spacious rooms, and decent location. The owner pointed out a nice nearby onsen after our late arrival. It was a great stay. I will stay here again when I visit Kyoto next time.

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
