A very nice experience, the hotel is in a good position, not far from the train station and the next underground station can be reached by foot. All rooms are very clean, a bit small but acceptable, considering Japanese standards. Breakfast has a ample choice of food both western and asian but the breakfast area is not well organized and...

The hotel is located at great location near the central of Kyoto. Room was small however it is clean and tidy. Walking distance to Nishiki market, lots of nearby cafe where you could hang around for breakfast and tea break. It is just walking distance to nearby subway station - Karasuma-Oike, however it is advisable to take cab if you...

had a shinnenkai party here, food was surprisingly good for buffet style, room was a little tight but that was our issue. Location was just off some of the funky shopping streets and close to Kyoto station

I wanted to share Japan with my friends and spent a long weekend with them in Kyoto at this hotel. We specifically chose this hotel because of the Onsen. The room itself was small but clean and comfortable. The onsen has a strict no tattoo policy so don't bother going here if you can't cover up your tattoos. We were...

The distinguishing feature of the Hotel Monterey: wonderful customer service! The concierge, Magara, was friendly, conscientious, thorough, and thoughtful in offering dining suggestions and making transportation arrangements and negotiating ticket transactions. The front desk and cleaning crew and dining staff were all dedicated to making us feel comfortable. visited Nov 2015.

Arriving at Kyoto station you can either take the subway for a couple of stops, or a taxi (it’s about 900-1100 Yen depending on traffic). The hotel is on a central way, in the city center. You have the subway at your doorstep too. A possible downside of being so central is that prices of nearby restaurants also reflect that....

Excellent hotel. Large rooms. Very clean. Close to both subways and trains. Taxis cheap and easy to take to tourist locations from the hotel. Lovely and very helpful staff. One of the best hotels we stayed in Japan. Great onsen as well. We all loved this hotel and would give it a 5 star rating.

Lovely breakfasts, amazing Japanese and Western choices, and lovely decor, quite arts and crafts style. In the bar they had 1930s tea sets from Britain, which was nice to see! Rooms very comfortable, great location near metros and bus stops for sight seeing. Staff gave us a list of restaurants with English menus which was so valuable and we sought...

I found this hotel by searching the rating. The overall facility is well managed and location is convenient. The only issue or my personal issue (I am very sensitive to smell): the curtain in bath room is kind of odd or smelly because they use cloth type rather than those plastic curtain.

Very close to subway station, walkable distance to prime area including Shijo dori, Sanjo dori, 先斗町... Staff is nice and suggested and helped me reserved a nearby restaurant per my request. The hot spring facility is good. The chapel inside the hotel offers v nice atmosphere during Christmas!

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
