Ok, this is cheap. But we had there the smallest rooms ever in Japan. Bathrooms are shared between rooms. Walls are paper thin frames (hello neighbour!). Low price is not an excuse (and it was not so low!). Really, you can find much better than this.

I have taken groups of high school students to Japan, and have stayed at the Seiki 3 times. The rooms are traditional tatami, with futon. Although small, each room has a bathroom, a TV, a small refrigerator, an electric kettle for water, and free wi-fi. The owners--a husband and wife team--have gone out of their way to help us in...

I normally don't give strong negative words for reviews but this ryokan owner is what I described above. I made a reservation for 3 rooms 7 nights (a good catch for them I supposed). But within their standard no charge cancellation time frame I cancelled the booking. Using the same thread that they sent to confirm my reservation. No reply...

I normally look at the bright side of things, but that was impossible with this hotel. Minuscule rooms, cheap construction which hasn't had any maintenance since years: the walls were dripping with water in the morning, the sink was leaking and wouldn't drain and you wouldn't dare to flush the toilet during the night in fear of waking up the...

I had a one night stay as it was just meant to be a transit stay between Kanazawa and leaving for Kansai Airport the next day. Quite a clean place but small, though sufficient for a solo traveler like myself. Cleanliness is quite alright except that there are some yellow stains on the window shades. The heater was out of...

stayed for 2 nights with my hubby, dad & mum , rooms located on 2/f & 4/f. quiet nights for good sleep. Excellent location as just 10 mins walk from Kyoto station. Basically the communication with the hosts were fine as they can speak English. Lift is available which is good as we got 2 x 32" lugguages. as mentioned...

Stayed for 1 night during peak season. Good location and relatively good price. I stayed on the 5th storey, which means I have to walk up one storey from where the lift stops. The room is very small as a twin room, the hygiene is good. The mattress is a pleasent surprise as a ryokan - I am able to...

spent 3 days. was a very good, inexpensive multistoried 'ryokan' near kyoto station. its not 'traditional' in that its multistoried. the owner is very helpful, jolly and active. he offered a free day bus pass, a free map of kyoto, of the vicinity as well, and general traveller tips to whats around and how to go about. will return and...

This hotel was really a bad surprise for us. First, it is not a real Ryokan (beside having to leave the shoes at the entrance) and it is very very dirty. Hairs of other people and dust everywhere on the floor and sheets. They switch off AC when you leave, and in summer it is really very hot! I even...

I spent several days in Kyoto and had decided to stay at Station Ryokan Seiki. The owner was very helpful and friendly, always willing to provide with useful information. This hotel is conveniently located, very close to the Kyoto station and two big shopping malls.

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
