After spending a week in Tokyo my son and I decided to spend a couple days in Kyoto. This was our first time staying at a ryokan. It was easy to get to the ryokan from Kyoto station by taxi. We were graciously greeted and given a brief introduction to ryokan traditons. Our modern room was nice, but I would...

This ryokan is very quaint, the staff are wonderful (so soft spoken), is very well maintained, has very well preserved the Japanese culture and the luggage were taken to our rooms by the staff members. So then why am I rating it a 3 instead of a 4 you may ask. This has been the first ryokan and also the...

I didn't think this was a bad experience. Staying at a ryokan is definitely an experience one will not forget. Its a way of experiencing Japanese styling living. If this place wasn't priced so high, then it would get more stars because my expectations would be different. I paid USD750/night for two people including half board. I do understand that...

My wife and 3 kids (10, 8, and 3) have stayed in hotels all over Asia, and wanted an authentic Kyoto experience even if that meant a trade-off to ultra-modern creature comforts (think Singapore). Ryokans are physically similar, so the real differentiation comes in the service. We authentically felt 'selfless hospitality' - the staff not only accommodated us in every...

We truly felt educated in what it is to stay in a Ryokan. The staff did everything possible to make my family comfortable. We slept surprising well on our floor pads. If you decide to eat the Japanese meal, get the "Economy" size. It was still too much to eat.

We stayed in the Japanese style rooms with a futon. We found the room on cheap tickets for $200/night after taxes. Included breakfast which was a plus. The rooms were very spacious. Enjoyed the small public onsen in the hotel. Wish is was a little bigger. The staff was friendly and we loved the whole experience.

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Traditional japanese style Ryokan/Inn (Gion Higashiyama / Kita Shirakawa / Kurama / Yase / Ohara Get the best out of a RYOKAN Kyoto, once prospering as the nation's capital for over 1,200 years is the city of arts, tradition and history. Kyoto plays a significant role in the identity of Japanese people. Experience this authentic part of Japan in a Ryokan. Why do Japanese people feel most comfortable on Tatami floors? Why do Japanese people from outside Kyoto praise Japanese food in Kyoto? Why is it difficult for Japanese people on vacation to decide whether to stay in a hotel or a Ryokan when they come to Kyoto? Kyoto is the city where Japanese people can reassure their ethnicity and remember the most important things about being Japanese. In a Ryokan, get more out of the basic necessities in life; food, shelter and clothing. An experience different from the common hotel. A Ryokan is an accommodation facility original to the owners taste, influenced by Japanese culture, style and feel. A service that can't be found anywhere else in the world; only here in Japan. Don't miss the opportunity to experience a deeper Japan. How to take a ONSEN style japanese bath room, large bath room. You are only to go inside the bath tub after you washed your body. First, you are to rinse your body with hot water. Washing beforehand helps to keep the water in bath tub clean. The rinsing and washing of your body with hot water also acclimatizes you to the temperature of the bath tub, which can be very hot. It is not advisable to jump into the water like diving in to a swimming pool. Please use discretion. Please do not put the hand towel into the bath tub water. Most people place the towel on their head. And remember do not use any soap or shampoo or other skin cleansers in bath tub either. Open 6:30AM to 10:00AM , 15:00PM to 23:00PM.
