Well, we somehow had to come back. This time we booked two rooms as my daughter was visiting Japan with us, celebrating her 30th anniversary . We stayed in rooms 31 & 34, both located on the ground floor. After 5 years we still enjoyed that magic atmosphere I did describe in my original 2015 review. Top class, top service, top staff, top food. Shortly: a must.

This is the best Ryokan I have ever stayed in Japan. It is expansive, but do not be scared by the price, this is worthy. In China, I always heard that the top three Ryokan in Kyoto and Hiiragiya is one of them. I have long admired it and always want to stay there once. After I went this January, I will say, This is the best Ryokan I have ever stayed in Japan (Yes, what I have said in the beginning). I stayed in the old building in this Ryokan, which you can feel is old but they have redecorated it inside so it is amazing. They have really good service. For example, in the old building, because there is no elevator, which is hard for you to move your luggage. However, you do not need to move your luggage when you check-in and check-out as the staff will help you. Moreover, after you check-out, they will stand in front of the door until they cannot see you anymore. For the room, after you enter, you will first see a folding screen like furniture (in fact, I don't know if calling it furniture is appropriate). Behind it, you will find your luggage. They have an individual bathroom in the room and it is a very Japanese style one. They do have a big public onsen but you have to reserve it. You can eat dinner and breakfast in your room, which is very rare for Ryokan. However, it means that you need to get up early in the morning since they need to get everything ready before breakfast and it is not good news for someone like me like to wake up late in the morning. The dish is very delicious. After dinner, they will provide some snacks and tea for you. Overall, it is a Luxury Ryokan but is really worthy. I will recommend everyone who has enough money to try to stay here for one night or more.

Hiiragiya provided an unforgettable evening! Check-in was smooth and efficient. We received lots of advice and maps of recommended walking tours. Maho took care of us all evening and in the morning--she was amazing. The dinner and breakfast meals are also unforgettable. It was a wonderful stay and without hesitation the highlight of our Kyoto visit.

My wife and I wanted to spend two nights in a traditional 'ryoken' in Kyoto and chose Hiiragiya. What an amazingly, wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived we were welcomed in a manner which made us feel at ease and 'at home'--the stated goal of the wonderful innkeeper who told us she is in the 10th generation of her family to run the inn. The facilities were marvelous and our room with private bath, lovely and quiet with a garden view and deep soaking tub. The food was traditional, plentiful, and excellent. The service was warm, prompt, dependable. In all, this is an inn whose people and facilities provide a gracious, peaceful experience. We could not have found a better place!
