A warmer welcome is almost unimaginable; being welcomed to RyokanYuhara is like being toured around one of Kyoto's storied heritage sites and it might as well: the quaint, creek-side Ryokan has won numerous awards among Kyoto's traditional-style accommodations and has been the inn-of-choice of a number of European diplomats. It's also close enough to bus and train stations (as well...

Location was about 15 minutes walk from the station and situated in a quiet part of the town alongside a canal. Room was comfortable and of a good size and also had a good seating area. However the accommodation had it faults. The shower temperature was set to tepid and could not be increased. The bath was the same. How can you...

We wanted to stay in a Ryokan during our short trip to Japan, but due to my wife's dietary restrictions (she doesn't eat fish) we worried about paying a high rate that included a multi-course dinner she wouldn't enjoy. Yuhara was a good compromise. It's probably not the full experience, and the bath/onsen is probably not up to snuff, but...

This was our first experience staying at a ryokan and Mr. Yuhara and his parents made us feel very welcome. It is convenient for stations, and walkable to many of the Kyoto sites in the old town. Sharing the bathrooms was not a problem as we never seemed to see other guests. I would recommend it.

Loved this place so much it was hard leaving it; close to central Kyoto, about 10 minutes away from the main station this is a really great place to stay in. The host are absolutely lovely and very friendly; the rooms are Japanese style, with tatami mats and floor beds which are great for your back. Can't wait to go...

I was traveling with a couple of friends and we decided to book this ryokan because we had heard that it is a nice one. We were really happy with our choice because the family Yuhara was so nice and helpful. They always gave advice and gave us this nice map where there were cafes and sights marked for us....

We stayed two nights in the highest season of the year, a 3 day weekend in the peak of the autumn leaves season. We only found this place after calling more than 50 places that did not have online booking. To summarize, it is one of the cleaned places I have ever stayed. It is central, not a the most...

We stayed here for 5 nights recently. We were warmly welcomed and thoroughly shown around the Ryokan. The rooms are traditional futons on tatami mats. There is no food available and the closest grocery store is about a 15 minute walk away. However the location is beside a canal and in a very quiet neighborhood. Easy access from the train...

Really glad our friend recommended this friendly ryokan, close to Kyoto station and many services. Our first visit to Kyoto was too short to come back by 5pm and enjoy the owner's tea and amenities every day, but we appreciated all time spent in this ryokan and hope we will soon come back to discover how delightful spring can be...

I have not been there yet but my husband has been a couple of times a few years ago. On our up coming trip to Kyoto in June this year, we want to stay there for a few days. However, we have not been able to book it yet because the owner and servers there do not speak English and...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
