Overall, a good experience at ANA. Average amenities. The mattress was on the floor, creating an uncomfortable experience getting in/out/up/down with my knee problem. It's an older hotel, but clean. Had breakfast at the hotel and it was pretty good; dinner was very good.

I would agree that this hotel is nothing special. However, for anyone visiting Kyoto as a tourist, this hotel has a fantastic location and is really geared up to give you a great stay. Firstly, the free bus to and from the train station is so convenient (you find it stops outside the station McDonalds on the south side), particularly...

This is a nicely located hotel. It is just opposite the Nijo Castle, built by a Japanese general when he had to come to see the emporor. The rooms are very clean. Computer connection good. It is only a pity that there is only lanline for computer conenction. On the TV channels, I can watch BBC and CNN, which is...

This hotel is centrally located in the middle of Kyoto, just across the street from Nijo Castle. the location is great, but otherwise, this hotel is nothing special. There is a buffet that was included in the price. It included the regular colossal spread of Japanese and Euro-American treats, but in contrast to other buffets in Japan, this was one...

The good: Location is good, right in front of the Nijo Castle. Staff were helpful and spoke very good English. Shuttle bus to Kyoto Station was also a delight. The bad: Old hotel, needs an upgrade. Requested a room overlooking the castle and was told we have to pay an extra 1,000 yen a day for a smoking room.

This hotel is a great base for sightseeing - shuttle bus to Kyoto Railway station every 15 mins, Subway and buses just around the corner. There are lots of tiny eateries in the sidestreets. Nijo Castle is well worth a visit and is right across the street. Art museums, Handicraft center, Heian Jingu Shrine etc all a couple of subway...

Although this hotel is classified as an "upscale" hotel I suspect that it may have been in the year 1980, but as this is 2012 the hotel is very dated. The rooms are a decent size and are western style, but are decorated straight out of the 80's. Having come from a sunroute hotel in Tokyo just the week before...

We have stayed at this hotel for three nights and we could not wait to leave. The rooms are dated, the bathrooms out of plastic, i have never seen such a place before. The breakfadt was revolting mainly serving processed food.

The location opposite Nijo Castle is excellent and the view of the castle from our room was lovely. There is a train station on the corner and a shuttle bus to the railway terminal so getting around is quite convenient. Our room and bathroom were spacious and they were clean and comfortable. Unfortunately the carpets in the hallways and the...

Intro & Location: I recently rounded out a 6 day work trip to Tokyo with 2 days in Kyoto. Unfortunatly we were in a conference room most of the time but the few sites I saw (The Golden Palace, and the Nijo Castle were spectacular.) We also had an incredible dinner up in the mountains behind Kyoto (I can't remember...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

The ANA Hotel Kyoto looks almost out of place with its modern exterior nestled amongst the sublime beauty and historic grandeur of Japan s old capital. This however belies the traditional hospitality and classic atmosphere to be experienced within her four walls. ... more   less
