Pan and Circus... this hostel is definitively well located. But, some serious work should be done as it's quite "amateur" for a place this is supposed to be a proper "accommodation". Yep, the decoration is edgy, artsy, hipstery, that's cool BUT, the Isolation in the (male) room was not the best, there were sheets covering the windows (and I was...

I spent 4 nights here. The place is exactly how it looks like in the pics (perhaps a bit more dusty). Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I found it a perfect deal for my stay: I went out at 8 and came back at 20, so I just used it for sleeping. There is only one toilet on the...

Stayed here in July '15 with a friend for four nights, and ran into some of the coolest people I met in Japan. The bar area is lovely and full of vintage decor, harkening back to French baroque interior design. Accommodation is simple, we stayed in bunk beds in an attic room and showered in a little cabin in the...

As sa travelling student, the place and price suited my needs well enough. I loved the atmosphere and the inherent japaneseness of the place which provided a queer mix with the western vintage interior of the bar below the hostel. Very interesting and, to me, enjoyable as well. The shower and the bathroom are in a separate space that you...

Pictures shown in the homepage do not match the real scenes. 3,000 Yen per night/person.Share dormitory is on the second floor.Way to the share bathroom you need to walk carefully pass the kitchen and it wass messy. There is a pub downstairs but it seems available for Japanese only. The only good thing is that the guesthouse is located next to...

The decoration , the chandeliers looks pretty , it's arty , we get it. But honestly . Even from the moment I arrived , there were no one, it was dark in the guesthouse, it took me maybe 20 minutes to understand I was in the right place ( I waited for 30 mins in front of the guesthouse, the...

If you can find it good luck. Once you do the staff are lovely but be warned. The shower is behind the bar. The place extremely old and dusty. The one toilet is in the common room. The beds are too short for a 5"6 westerner. I actually was desperate to check out. It grew on me though and by...

I'm staying in Pan and Circus for 2 nights and it's really a magic place, out of time, the pics can describe a bit the atmosphere. The neighbor is quite central, 15 mins walking from the imperial garden. Marina is really sweet and caring, you can also rent a bike here.

I first learned about the joint through Japanese community site in New York. This guy that lives in NY owns a funky place in Kyoto(my hometown). I stopped by there alone on my way back from an overnight out of town trip. Unfortunately I could't drink since driving. The first floor is a bar/lounge and I guess the upstairs have...

Drank here two evenings while I was in Kyoto once with a friend and once on my own. Felt very comfortable, literally and figuratively on both occasions. Nice old sofas and tatty welcoming surroundings. Didn't stay in the hostel, but rather wish I had. Beer a bit overpriced at 600 yen.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
