We stayed 2 nights at the Hotel Kanra. It was in a good location, close to the train station and central to the the all the hustle and bustle of the city. Beds were really comfortable and we had a couple of great nights sleep. Also really nice shower/bath. We made use of the complimentary electric bikes so we could...

We had a very pleasant stay during March 2017. Extremely friendly staff, very nice rooms and good location. The room is a combination between the traditional japanease style and modern western, very nice. One touch is the all wooden (sandal wood) bathtub that makes the bathroom smell authentic.

Location is excellent and the reviews were spot on. What a treat. Felt like a ryokan with really large room and fab bathroom. Kyoto train station and subway access so close. We had 4 nights and I would have liked to stay longer. Would definitely stay at the Kanra again. The staff were so obliging. Seven Eleven convenience store next...

We stayed here in January just before heading south to hike the Kumano Kodo trail. It's a beautiful hotel - lovely large designer bedroom, large beautiful bathroom with deep bath and huge shower and beautiful public spaces. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I would absolutely come back here again. We travelled with our three children - ages 18,...

Chose this hotel due to the positive ratings and this hotel didn't fail to impress us. We stayed at the main building double room. Room: very bright lighting unlike some older comments. Bed is comfortable. Housekeeping has done a good job. Design: really like the design of the room, and the gate for the room. Location: a convenient 15 min...

Hard to describe - it's sort of like a zen atmosphere with a modern ryokan touch. Great shower and tub. Room is big by Japanese standards. Bed was very comfortable. Location is just a few blocks from the train station, and subway. Right next door to famous Temple. 7/11 next door. Would definitely stay here again.

Feels like a minimalist Ryokan. For those that want that authentic Japanese experience but don't feel like sleeping on a cold hard floor... Beautifully designed hotel. The staff are so helpful and nice.

My family and I (2 adults, 1 child) stayed at the Hotel Kanra for 3 nights and we all agree it is one of the best hotels we have stayed at, certainly in terms of service. Modern, well appointed rooms with a traditional, Japanese touch. The rooms are big and the design impeccable. They have really thought of everything. Nice...

As first time visitors to Japan, the Hotel Kanra could not have been more welcoming after our very long flight from the US. The staff was so nice, friendly and helpful. The tea at check in was a lovely surprise. The ambience was the best we experienced during our trip, from the zen garden in each room entrance to the...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
