Stayed here for work, and absolutely loved it. Excellent location right next to a metro stop, which made it convenient to get around. Cute little gift shop off the lobby area, great ambiance in the hotel in general. The hotel itself is very modern, has clean lines, and is very architectural/design focused. It's a great mix of Japanese & Western...

The best thing about this place are the staff, in particular the reception staff. They are extremely polite, competent and welcoming. They provided good information (with all sorts of maps, print outs and timetables) and genuinely wanted us to have a good time. Thank you guys, you were fabulous! The hotel itself disappointed me a bit. The location is so...

Great location with fabulous Japanese modern decor, really loved the mini zen garden outside the room. The room was fairly spacious, clean and amenities were plentiful. Note there are no views from the windows as the hotel is located on a main road. Lovely bar area by reception which is recommended for a nightcap or a sweet treat. The location...

Lovely design hotel in a good location. Wanted to love the place but had a few issues. We booked the family room which although roomy has an awkward configuration. We chose not to have the 2 extra futon beds laid out for the kids to save space in the room and our 11 year olds slept in bed with us....

This had originally been my first choice hotel for Kyoto but was only able to book it for the last 2 days of our 5 day stay. It was such a delight to move in here after having spent 3 days at the Grand Bach Hotel. The contrast was like day and night, and the price differential was only modest....

We stayed here for two nights during my Kyoto holiday in April; one night in the annex building where the rooms are slightly bigger and one night in the main building were the rooms are newer. The room I paid for in annex was about USD320 a night while the room in the main building was USD530 a night. The...

Facing one of the hundred temples in te city, the hotel is just perfect, mixing Japanese traditional style with all possible modern and confortable amenities. Near by the station and 3 minutes walk from one of the 2 metro lines. Rooms are very large as well as the bathrooms (including a wooden bath tub). Very friendly service. A light breakfast...

The Kanra Kyoto is a new hotel, beautifully designed, with a hospitable staff and very good hotel food. The Kanra is conveniently located and happens to be next to a beautiful temple, one of the biggest wooden structures in Japan (why it's not in all the guidebooks is a mystery). The rooms at the Kanra are a mix of Japanese...

Loved this hotel, the lobby was done beautifully in a minimalist Japanese style which was echoed in the rooms. Staff amongst the best, very helpful. The huge wooden bath in the room was a delight. Just needed more clothing hanging and storage in the rooms. Location also handy as very close to the station.

Thank Binno

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
