Sowaka is a Sanskrit word meaning “happiness” or “wellbeing.” It is a word of blessing, often spoken at the end of the Buddhist sutras that echo through the innumerable temples of Kyoto. Once across the stone threshold, you are instantly transported to an oasis of calm. Relax in one of Sowaka’s 23 individually designed rooms, listening to gentle breezes blow through the green and tranquil courtyard.

This is a great place to stay, we were glad we chose this instead of a traditional hotel and will take some of the minimalist flavor home with us. Quiet and a true retreat after a long day of exploration. Breakfast was awesome especially the Japanese breakfast. Bathrooms were outstanding, bed was super comfy had a great night sleep every night. Very ideally located as well and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Will be back on our next trip.

Very good location for wandering to temples, the ryokan sort of rambles over its property, housing a chic restaurant as part of its structure. It is a ryokan, so if you want a big lobby, a TV in your room,a gym, etc., consider the Four Seasons or the like. But we enjoyed its minimal aesthetic. The service at the front desk was friendly and efficient; the room had a great tub; the design sense was strong; and it was fun to have an updated/modernist take on a ryokan in Kyoto.

A luxury modern ryokan set in a newly furnished 100 year old restaurant. The location is excellent as it is walkable to Gion area, Yasaka shrine, Nineizaka and Kiyomizu-dera. Coffee lovers will love it as you will be near % Arabica and the charming Starbucks here. The room is big with wonderful amenities. The bed was big and soft, the cypress bath tub was so unique, the speaker was good and the minibar items were all quality products! The service is attentive and thoughtful. Lastly, both the dinner and breakfast were awesome, with the dinner being really an unforgettable meal.

Sowaka was definitely a gem of a discovery in our recent Japan trip. If you are looking for something different & cultural, then this is the place for you. Some of the things that stands out are: (1) Location - Fantastic proximity to all the major tourist areas in Kyoto. We literally were able to walk to most of the places that we wanted to do to. The street where the hotel is located is extremely charming and quiet. (2) Design - Minimalist contemporary design with hints of Japanese authenticity. I believe that the hotel in an old converted house, and you can still see traces of the old kitchen stove which is fantastic! We stayed in the annex (new wing) which was brilliantly designed and cosy. (3) Amenities - We stayed in one of the larger suites, and it came with a few unexpected amenities such as facial products, Dyson hairdryer and Japanese tea sets. Nice touch! (4) Staff - The staff are all extremely helpful and always ready to help. Some of them have very good English, no problems in communicating. (5) Restaurant - The restaurant is fantastic. We had one dinner and breakfast there. Definitely try the breakfast with Japanese and Western options. The Japanese breakfast is amazing, so intricate and tasty. Great way to start the day. Some very minor things to improve on are (just want to list them out here so that they can continue to perfect their excellent services) (1) Blinds - The blinds in our toilets were a bit hard to adjust. Had to call front desk to help, and they solved it quickly. (2) Wifi - The wifi seemed to be a bit unstable. Some times in the afternoons, it was very hard to connect. Most of the time there was no problem. Will definitely come back again if we are in Kyoto! Well done Sowaka!

If you go to Kyoto, and want an authentic living experience in an amazing location, this is a hotel for you.. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary and wanted a very special hotel to match the occasion. We chose a room with a "garden view", which means the room has an old fashioned Japanese garden attached to it, behind a paper screen sliding door. Walking through the hotel was like walking back in time. But it has all the modern amenities you need for a very pleasant stay. The service was exceptional too. Also, we stayed in the old part of the hotel, which used to be a traditional Kyoto restaurant. Next to the old section is a newly built "annex" with more rooms. In terms of location, the hotel is located in the Gion district, which I think is best for visiting/walking to many temples, and seeing Geishas. The hotel is w/i a short walk to the Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu Temple. Also recommend seeing other parts of Kyoto: Imperial Palace, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Romantic Train Sagano, Kinkaku Jicho (Golden Temple), and Fushimi Inari Shrine (w/the orange gate hallways).
