As an American never having stayed Japanese guesthouse , didn't know what to expect, but we had an enjoyable four nights. My only complaint is the room size as I am 6ft 3 and half the room is only 4 ft tall. No stools or chairs to sit on but that is SOP. There is a nice kitchen with microwave...

Thank you for your stay and feedback. We are glad that we mainly got your positive comment about your stay. Regarding the downwards, we preserved the traditional structure from ages ago and it connects to its smallness. This is one of features in those days, so we are always hoping that guests can enjoy these traditional aspects, too. Concerning the...

I would say it is basically a residential converted into a ryokan. Every ryokan room is actually a room in essence. Toilets and bathroom are shared among all the guests. It is reasonably clean though. There is a kitchen with microwave oven in case you need a quick bite. If you are on low cost traveling this might be just...

We thank you for your good feedback overall. Our feature is being able to stay in Japanese traditional structured accommodation at reasonable cost, and you pointed it out in the comment. We are grateful about this. We care about the cleanness, and getting this praise generates our motivations much. We also have rooms with private bathroom, so please feel free...

I write this review with a broken heart due to the small but important change that took place from my previous stay about two years ago. Two year ago the reception area was inside the building, which gave it a very family approach to the place, considering that you were always welcomed back, whenever you would return or wished a...

First of all, we thank you for your stay again. Also, we simultaneously appreciate your generous patience with deep. We need to apologize for your isolated feeling during your stay. Although we moved our reception in a short distance for not only ours, but guests' convenience such as enough information in Kyoto, a spacing, or a facility use, it is...

Lovely Hotel! Rooms are a little small but very clean and comfortable! If you are a light sleeper though be aware that there is only a paper window separating you from outside sounds. The hotel is within walking distance to Kyoto station which is fantastic! There is a public bath close by and a 7/11 close by! They have a...

I found this ryokan to be everything I needed. I recently stayed here for 2 nights. I booked a single room with private bath. The room itself was small, but I knew/expected this when I was reserving my room. I was glad to have the private bath, just for simplicity of not having to juggle my toiletries (I always bring...

Thank you very much for detailed feedback. We are happy that you mostly enjoyed your stay with us. Regarding the only inconvenient you mentioned, we have an adequately high wall of bath tubs to prevent from any water leak. So we hope that every guests can understand the point. Apart from that, it seems that you could enjoy or take...

We expected a little more room and ceilings above head high. It is certainly the basic, traditional and simple accommodation as advertised. We were in a section away from the common areas, eg kitchen, so it was not as convenient as for the rooms in the same building. This also meant we had almost no further contact with staff or...

Thank you for your stay and comment. Please excuse us to explain our place on our side, too. Our concept is that staying in a real traditional Japanese town house at reasonable price in comparison with Ryokans. It is actually not spacious as rooms in hotels now, but we are always hoping that every guests enjoy or feel these aspects...

This was one of the best hotels we stayed in at our trip to japan, with traditional and coozy rooms, the bar was also very nice. The staff was very kind and helpful, answered all kind of questions we had with no problem. Even helped me translate a note i got from a lotterything from a izakaya 😄

I booked single room and was warned in advance by the staff that it was tiny. But I thought it was lovely! I had my own bathroom and shower, bed (Japanese style tatami, but with soft Western pillow), yukata (Japanese robe), air con, TV and tea making facilities in the room. There was room for a large suitcase to fit...

Love this place. So homey. So lovely. Staff are very nice and accommodating. Patiently answered all our plenty of inqueries. Not for people who are loud since you can hear people from the other room when they talk. Not all Taxis know the place. So better use google map or waze. Love the neighborhood. Its so clean. We appreciate your comment on your stay. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay with us overall. Due to the structure of traditional town houses, we need to ask our guests to cooperate with being respectful not to be loud for the others. We remind them of it at check-in, so there should not be a big problem hopefully....

We spent 3 nights in the Ryokan and found it very adequate. The rooms have everything one needs. The only issue (in general with small Ryokans) is the noise from both the street and neighbouring rooms, which can at times be bothersome. The location is good, but not great - a 10 min walk to most of the interesting places....

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
