This is a chill out resort surrounded by nature. It has the Oi-gawa river on one side and the lush Mount Arashi on the other. The resort can be reached by a short boat ride from the boat landing near the famous Togetsukyo Bridge. Or, a walk along the promenade by the river. This is one of the most beautiful...

As soon as you board the ryokan's boat for the short ride to Hoshinoya you know you are going to have a special experience. Rooms overlooking the river provide a very romantic setting. The restaurant menu was outstanding and I thoroughly recommend the sake/wine food pairing menu.

We stayed for 2 nights with our girls aged 20 and 14. We had 2 separate rooms which worked well. You know the room rate before you arrive so you can't really complain. And research would have shown that the room is quite basic, in line with Japanese culture and design. The bathroom was good, including a cypress timber bathtub...

Time slows as you take the lovely ride to the ryokan and as the hotel staff take care of your every need. No need to worry about getting in line, carrying your bags or trying to...

The experience starts at the pier where guests are taken by boat along the river valley. There were days when there were fog lingering down the valley creating that out of the world feeling. The villa has a perfect view to the mountain and river yet well hidden within the hill side to give the privacy. The tranquility cannot be...

It is frankly unpleasant to have to write a really tough and bad review on a hotel or restaurant. After all, behind each and every commercial activity, there are a number of employees, often working hard, and who often bear no responsibility for the failures and weaknesses of their employer. On the other side, there are instances where the need...

Few places in this world carry the ability to welcome guests in every season. Cherry Blossom season is unbelievable but I can only imagine what this place must look like in winter and autumn. I need to see this for myself one day. Wow!!! What a setting and how peaceful can you really get? Kyoto has so much to offer...

A mixed review for this resort got us a bit worried to go here after doing some research, but we are glad we choose to keep our reservation. The boat by Arashiyama station took us on a roughly 10min journey through beautiful river/mountain scenery to the Ryokan. Upon arrival, we were met by a designated check in person. Yes -...

Great sense of arrival by using a boat to reach the ryokan. It made me feel someone special. The room is separated to two spaces, dining space and bed room. I needed little bit more relaxing space within the private space. The room was full of Hoshino's private brand products. There are full of public space that guests can use...

Superb ryokan in Kyoto, not the most traditional but the interior is definitely well designed. The room service was cool, but the kaiseki set dinner at the restaurant was a bit overpriced. Overall, the experience was good, but the grounds seems a little small for a Hoshinoya experience, and there is no hot spring!

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
