A-yado Gion is in such a great location. It is on a quiet street close to the beautiful Gion area, and is a few minutes away from some of the busier streets of Kyoto. The staff was super friendly and told me which places I should visit over my three-day stay. Their common room was a great place to meet...

This place is truly meant for backpackers. Located at Gion, it is a little difficult to get here if you dont have google maps. The bunk beds are huge, the washrooms are clean and well-equipped. They vaccum the area every morning at 10 am. You can wash your clothes for free. The biggest highlight is the cafeteria at this hostel....

The staff here are excellent, really really helpful and they make sure you have an easy visit and stay. Beds are typical for what you pay but the real gem is the lounge area upstairs. A good space, free breakfast tea and coffee, cheap snacks and even cheaper beer. Very well located, a short walk from the city centre and...

I had a pleasant three night stay at this hostel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The beds are extremely comfortable and its in a fantastic location. The wifi was good most of the time. However the room is very tight, you had to crawl over people's luggage to get out. Also, they say they provide free breakfast but...

This hostel was great! The beds were comfortable and the place seemed really clean. Staff was very nice and helpfull. The hostel has a great location in historical Gion, and is therefore situated close to several of the main attractions in Kyoto. You get a small breakfast included, and you also get free tee or coffee whenever. And best of...

The hostel itself was fine, lovely staff who are very friendly, decent beds and lounge area. The room I was in had the sinks inside the actual bedroom, so I would often be woken up by the sound of people brushing their teeth. The overall atmosphere is nice, but most of the other guests come in at all hours of...

It has a great location and access, only 5min walk to the bus station and convi store, about 10min walk to the train station, near to kiyomizudera temple and down town (kawaramachi). And you can just walk around to meet geisha, because gion is the famous location of them (but It's pretty hard to find them actually). There are also...

Staying in Gion

Neighbourhood Profile
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
