We had a wonderful experience in this lovely Ryokan, all the staff at the reception speak a good level of english ( which is not that common in Japan) and they were really helpful with recommendations and guides. We stayed first night in a lovely traditional Japanese room and we finally experience how does feel when you sleep in a...

This place is full of amazing Japanese things. 'Ryo-kan' means, traditional style of accomodation in Japan, and this hotel is really good at expressing its identities. If you want just to sleep well, then you should book modern hotel near Kyoto JR station please. But if you want to feel 'Japan', then this place can be one of the best....

We loved our stay here. We opted to stay in the traditional room with bamboo mats and private garden, and it was wonderful. Price for stay was reasonable and the hotel is a 15min walk to Kyoto station. Breakfast was served in the morning for an extra fee (served very promptly and was not too expensive). The staff were fantastic...

It was my first hotel experience in Japan and I was amaze how hospitable the Japanese are. Upon arrival at the hotel we were welcomed by a Japanese wearing kimono in a very kind way, the helped us so much with our Kyoto trip. Our room is designed for tea ceremony with a balcony. (Too bad we stayed just overnight)....

This location was easy to find and accessible to the public transportation, temples and restaurants. The ryokan ensured that guests were never bored as they offered so many traditional Japanese experiences like the tea ceremony, breakfast options of Japanese or European. Over all, it was wonderful!

I personally do not like this ryokan. Due to the rate is quite expensive compared to others, and I was expecting to get better in room service but not. We will need to get amenities such as comb, toothbrush and etc in lobby. It should have put inside our room instead. Besides, there is no free bottle water or even...

We stayed 4 nights at this great hotel. The rooms (western style) are good and the staff is really nice and very helpful. They have a decent breakfast menu served at cosy tables in the lobby. It is relatively easy to get to the major sights of Kyoto from the hotel and the staff was always helpful at providing directions....

I wanted a real Japanese experience. Although a little bit of a walk from the station, it allows a genuine experience of Kyoto. Staff are hard working and helpful. The optional breakfasts are lovely and allow a good start to the day. The room was lovely and toastie and quiet when coming in from the cold.

The photos don't do justice to this gem. It's a traditional-style ryokan with tatami rooms and futons -- with an added layer of padding that made them quite comfortable. Everything seems to have been renovated recently; the entire place is pristine. Two major shrines are within blocks, and it's very close to the station. A major bus line is a...

This ryokan is clean, homely and the staff are wonderful. This ryokan won't break the bank and is very close to kyoto station and not far from a lot of the main sights. There is an amazing temple just down the road that we nearly missed that i highly recommend. Our room was a traditional room overlooking a small garden...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
