I stayed at the Celestine Hotel for a night and was please with my room appointments and amenities. The room was so smartly designed I was beyond myself. The bathrooms, the shower/onsen, the nespresso in the room as well as the amenities were all top notch. They really thought through the room experience to the hilt. The lobby was another story. It was super confusing to enter the lobby and then go downstairs and then have to enter another gated door to get to the elevator. The feng shui of that lobby was all off and I was surprised given how well the room was designed. The staff however was super accommodating on all fronts and highly attentive. If you don’t have the budget for the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, the Celestine Hotel is a perfect alternative.

The bedding. Let's start with that. Japanese hotels are amazing in this. The food. The location was ideal close to all temples and we loved breakfast. Gion is the best neighborhood to stay in my opinion. The restaurant at the hotel is also great.

My wife and I visited Kyoto with some friends and decided to stay at the Celestine. As most restaurants in Japan will only take reservations through local hotels, we wrote to the Celestine to ask them to help with the restaurant bookings for our stay in Kyoto. We corresponded with the conceirge team a few months before our trip and all the reservations were made. Thereafter, about 3 weeks before our trip, the conceirge team informed us that it is the hotel’s policy that a prepayment is required for all our reserved meals. The prepayment was to be made to the hotel and we would still have to make payment to the restaurants after our meals. The hotel will then give us a refund of the prepayment. I told them that this is an unusual practice. Whilst we have no issues with giving a credit card guarantee or even prepay the restaurants, a prepayment to the hotel followed by a refund will result in us suffering foreign exchange losses as credit card companies’ foreign exchange rates for refunds are lower than their rates for charges. The conceirge team insisted on the prepayment and even said that they would cancel the reservations if we don’t make the prepayment. I asked them why they didn’t tell us about this policy at the time we requested them to assist with the reservations and only a few weeks before our trip, which would make it too late for us to make new reservations as most restaurants will be fully booked and thus leaving us in a lurch. Only then did the conceirge team agreed to waive this requirement. But this was not the end of the matter...less than 2 weeks before we were scheduled to arrive in Kyoto, the conceirge team contacted us to inform that they had told us the wrong pricing for some of the restaurants. I was so upset that I asked them to cancel some of the reservations, which the conceirge team proceeded to do and all I had from them was a short email to say that they apologise that we had this bad experience! Upon our arrival at the hotel, no one from the concierge team bothered to meet us to explain or apologise to us! I have never had such a bad experience in all my years of travel. The conceirge team at the Celestine is totally unreliable and unprofessional and the worst that I have ever dealt with. I have even had better conceirge service from more moderate 3 star hotels.

My wife and I visited for a Christmas week visit in Kyoto. We decided to stay the Celestine. Actually my wife decided. It was a great choice. The location could not be better. It is near many of the key sites and places to eat. Five to ten minutes in any direction seemed to get us to a unique part of Kyoto and many food options. The hotel itself is impeccable in both service and luxury. The staff was always ready to answer questions, provide suggestions, and make dinner suggestions. The room was small in US terms, but felt large. It had everything you needed and was very comfortable. If you want a very nice Japanese hotel close to everything this hotel is for you. I will stay here again on my next trip to Kyoto.

From the moment you arrive the experience is calm, relaxed, welcoming and totally stylish. Architecture and design features are wonderful, with rooms much larger than most Japanese hotels. The location is brilliant, within easy walking distance of several significant temples making it easy to visit early or late. Shuttle bus service to/from station is helpful, but from personal observation is not well suited for oversized people with multiple oversized suitcases who over loudly complain that the seats are too small after half filling the bus with their suitcases. For everyone else, the shuttle is excellent! Will always stay here in Kyoto - not cheap but outstanding value.

The hotel is ideally situated in the Gion district. The staff is amazing and the design of the hotel mirrors the architecture and feel of the Gion district. The room was small, but perfectly formed with its quirky use of moving walls and the ambience in the rest of the hotel was relaxing and stylish. The breakfast (Japanese food) was the best that we had in our two weeks in Japan.

The Celestine is a really beautifully designed, clean, and comfortable hotel in Gion, walking distance to many temples, shrines, and restaurants. It is about 1/2 block from the Kenninji temple, with grounds that are really nice to walk through. You can also easily walk to Kiyomizu temple, if you don’t mind an uphill climb. All of the temples and shrines on the east side of Kyoto are nearby, and the bus system works well for getting to the west side and downtown. Check in was very pleasant. Usually I don’t get seated and offered a cup of tea during check in—very calming. The first morning we had the hotel breakfast, which was very expensive, but very good. There was a chef making fresh tempura! The next morning, we went to Sagan for breakfast —(if you are standing at the intersection facing the hotel, go down the street to the left and it’s on the end of the street.) it has good eggs and muffins. We caught the shuttle to get back to the station—very convenient and much easier than the bus. I was sorry that we didn’t come by shuttle—someone at the bus station misdirected us as to how to find the hotel, so it took us a while to get there. It is closest to the Kiyomizudera stop on the 100 bus.

You can feel comfort by a walk in their spacious and peaceful garden. It seems you enjoyed the time in Kiyomizu temple. There are many souvenir shops on the street the way to go to go to temple, so there are many places to have fun near around hotel. We glad to know that you felt great with our sitting check in with welcome drinks. We serve green tea of stem from Ippodo. It is very important to guests to relax when they checking in, so we make hot green tea in fall and winter seasons, and cold green tea in summer season. As you mentioned, you are able to use public bus No.100 to come to Kiyomizu Michi which is quite near bus stop from our hotel, but if you missed shuttle bus, we recommennd to take taxi to come to our hotel. For visitors to Kyoto who wish to stay in the Gion District this is the ideal location, being located opposite the entrance to the grounds of the Keninji Buddhist Temple. Other sights & shops were within easy walking distance. This very new Hotel can only be really classed as “boutique-style,” & really intended for the short, rather than long, stay visitor. Whereas the Hotel Staff were efficient, helpful & friendly & the rooms were comfortable enough, the use of twin “queen-size” beds somewhat restricted the available space & a “king/super-king” size would have better utilised this space. Unless you bathed/showered “Japanese” style, i.e. sitting down, the shower/bath proved to be dangerously slippery if standing & no bath/shower anti-slip mats were available. The Hotel’s guest facilities can only be described as “basic.” Although small, the restaurant provided adequate seating for guests, however the buffet-style breakfast menu was somewhat lacking in variety day-on-day with no apparent “short-order” chef cooking, e.g. freshly made omelettes etc.. In the evening the restaurant became a “Tempura Endo,” offering ONLY FOUR set menus at ¥15,000 p.p. (c. £107 at best current conversion, Nov. 2019). The “Lobby Lounge” was only open from 13:00 to 18:00 hrs for snacks & soft drinks/hot beverages & then at 19:00 it became the “Lounge Bar” where, for us, THREE drinks (ginger ale, small Kirin Beer & a Bombay Sapphire + Tonic cost £25+! In summary I would say this Hotel was better suited for the short-stay “on expenses” business person/in-transit tourist rather than for long stay.

Thank you very much for having stayed at HOTEL THE CELESTINE KYOTO GION, and taking your time to share your valuable comment. It is our great pleasure to know that you enjoyed our unique location in the middle of Gion District. We appreciate to hear about good comments for our staff and we are pleased that you enjoyed your time at our hotel. One of our key priorities is to provide the highest levels of service to our valuable customers. Your comments regarding breakfast, sincerely regret to learn that you were dissatisfied. We are offering small side dishes; Obanzai. They are made very rich by chefs skillfully bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients. We prepared some kinds of Obanzai, however it is disappointing that it is not enough for you. Since Tempura Endo is Japanese restaurant, we offer freshly made Japanese rolled omlet instead of normal omlet and Tempura which we fry in front of the guest, so we really hope that you enjoyed these. At the guest lounge we make our guest relaxed there, so there are some books, Origami, and notebook are available. It offers good time to enjoy our hotel. With regards to the cost of meals at our restaurant and bar, we feel sorry read that we could not live up to your expectation at this time. As you may know, pricing is based on the standard restaurant and bar rate in Kyoto. Let us make it clear that our service mission is definitely guest's satisfaction. We are creating an environment which accommodates to the experiences our guest may bring back with them as wonderful memories. Your comment gives us new idea. We discuss this issue with restaurant team. We are always welcome the guests who are family, couple, tourist, business people, and also solo tourist user. We try to notify the guests needs, and provide our sophisticated hospitality. Again, we really appreciate for your feedback of your experience. It makes our hotel better always. We truly hope that you can give us another opportunity at HOTEL THE CELESTINE KYOTO GION. Front Office Manager
