We were looking forward to staying at the Celestine and had high expectations as trip adviser reviews are good. We have to say our stay here exceeded our expectations. The hotel is beautiful lovely, relaxing and Japanese not a large hotel and its suited us perfectly. The rooms are beautiful and the hotel smells divine having asked what the lovely scent was I was able to buy burner oil from the reception which I have brought home with me. Breakfast was lovely and the hotel helped us make reservations in local restaurants and were very helpful . A lot of the nice local restaurants are booked in advance so it is helpful to make reservations as Gion is very popular. We had a fabulous trip to Japan staying in 5 hotels in total. The Celestine was by far the best we stayed at the design of the rooms and the whole feels of the hotel was perfect relaxing and everything was extremely clean and well kept. Staff could not do enough for us and we absolutely loved our stay here and in such a lovely location. Highly recommended.

Thank you very much for having stayed at HOTEL THE CELESTINE KYOTO GION and taking your time to share your experience. Firstly, we are delighted to receive such warm comment and know that your stay appears to have been enjoyable. Therefore, we are honored to be able to hear that you were satisfied with our staff's service and your room. Also, we are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the scent of the cypress trees in the hotel, which we burn with our own unique aroma blend, "Sanshisuimei". We hope you enjoyed the smell at home as well. Moreover, we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the breakfast as well. One of the attractive points of our breakfast is the traditional Kyoto cuisine, which is made with fresh local vegetables and ingredients, which you will not find anywhere else. Again, thank you very much for having chosen to stay with us amongst many other hotels. We all look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back to HOTEL THE CELESTINE KYOTO GION in the near future. Front Office Manager

My wife and I visited for a Christmas week visit in Kyoto. We decided to stay the Celestine. Actually my wife decided. It was a great choice. The location could not be better. It is near many of the key sites and places to eat. Five to ten minutes in any direction seemed to get us to a unique part of Kyoto and many food options.

The hotel itself is impeccable in both service and luxury. The staff was always ready to answer questions, provide suggestions, and make dinner suggestions. The room was small in US terms, but felt large. It had everything you needed and was very comfortable.

If you want a very nice Japanese hotel close to everything this hotel is for you. I will stay here again on my next trip to Kyoto.

Lovely hotel within walking distance of the Gion district. Snack room available for guests in the afternoon with hot and cold drinks and light snacks, biscuits, M&M etc. Decent size room with large bed. They have a public bath for guests separated for men and women. Breakfast was 90% Japanese with a lot of tempura options. We also ate in the tempura restaurant one evening which was good. The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to and from Kyoto train station. The hotel had pre booked all our restaurant reservations at our request and we had to pay a hefty deposit up front weeks before arrival to the hotel. We assumed it would be reimbursed to us on departure but we have had to wait a few days for it to be returned to our credit card. Very odd system.

My wife and I visited Kyoto with some friends and decided to stay at the Celestine.

As most restaurants in Japan will only take reservations through local hotels, we wrote to the Celestine to ask them to help with the restaurant bookings for our stay in Kyoto. We corresponded with the conceirge team a few months before our trip and all the reservations were made. Thereafter, about 3 weeks before our trip, the conceirge team informed us that it is the hotel’s policy that a prepayment is required for all our reserved meals. The prepayment was to be made to the hotel and we would still have to make payment to the restaurants after our meals. The hotel will then give us a refund of the prepayment. I told them that this is an unusual practice. Whilst we have no issues with giving a credit card guarantee or even prepay the restaurants, a prepayment to the hotel followed by a refund will result in us suffering foreign exchange losses as credit card companies’ foreign exchange rates for refunds are lower than their rates for charges. The conceirge team insisted on the prepayment and even said that they would cancel the reservations if we don’t make the prepayment. I asked them why they didn’t tell us about this policy at the time we requested them to assist with the reservations and only a few weeks before our trip, which would make it too late for us to make new reservations as most restaurants will be fully booked and thus leaving us in a lurch. Only then did the conceirge team agreed to waive this requirement.

But this was not the end of the matter...less than 2 weeks before we were scheduled to arrive in Kyoto, the conceirge team contacted us to inform that they had told us the wrong pricing for some of the restaurants. I was so upset that I asked them to cancel some of the reservations, which the conceirge team proceeded to do and all I had from them was a short email to say that they apologise that we had this bad experience! Upon our arrival at the hotel, no one from the concierge team bothered to meet us to explain or apologise to us!

I have never had such a bad experience in all my years of travel. The conceirge team at the Celestine is totally unreliable and unprofessional and the worst that I have ever dealt with. I have even had better conceirge service from more moderate 3 star hotels.

Second stay in this hotel, which combines a modern design with very traditional Japanese elements, making it a great place to stay in Kyoto. Especially since it is perfectly located for a short stay in the old capital.
The hotel offers also a nice large bath and a small but pleasant bar.
The service was efficient, with however one important disappointment: I asked for a check out 30 minutes later, and was requested to pay for that. This alone will make me consider to look for an alternative during my next stay…

Booked a room for 2 (2 large fulls on a single platform -- great setup) through the hotel directly. The location is good, close to the Gion train station (it is about 15 minutes by taxi or the free hotel shuttle from Kyoto Station). The rooms are quiet and spotlessly clean, the beds are comfortable, and everything works. I had read some negative reviews that it was impossible to check in early: no worries, one can't get to the room till 3PM, but the staff will happily store luggage if you arrive earlier (we did) and you will find it in your room by the time you do go in. While the staff's English may have been imperfect, communication was not an issue in the least and their willingness to help was never in doubt. The common hot bath was a pleasant surprise. The bathrooms are big and very comfortable, and fully equipped with all amenities and with a Nespresso machine (yes!). Breakfast was excellent and well worth booking together with the room. Highly recommended.

I stayed at the Celestine Hotel for a night and was please with my room appointments and amenities. The room was so smartly designed I was beyond myself. The bathrooms, the shower/onsen, the nespresso in the room as well as the amenities were all top notch. They really thought through the room experience to the hilt. The lobby was another story. It was super confusing to enter the lobby and then go downstairs and then have to enter another gated door to get to the elevator. The feng shui of that lobby was all off and I was surprised given how well the room was designed. The staff however was super accommodating on all fronts and highly attentive. If you don’t have the budget for the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, the Celestine Hotel is a perfect alternative.

This high end Boutique Hotel is a treasure. The service is beyond special. The attention to detail and intention given by each staff member is incredible. From restaurant reservations, to helping with bus and train logistics, to laundry services …. The concierge service is outstanding. The ascetics of the hotel are beautiful and serene. After a day of touring the city, you walk into the modern and sleek doors to an oasis. The hotel has a constant spa aroma, and the design has a zen sanctuary feel. The location is right in the heart of the city, walking distance to many of the main sites. Additionally, it is in a quieter part of town, yet close to many darling restaurants and bars. After 3 weeks traveling in Japan, this is our favorite stay by far. Do not hesitate to book your stay here. It’s fabulous.

The place was amazing! Rooms, and all! You can’t smell any hint of foul smell in the place. We have been in a lot of hotels in Europe and the US, and there is always that certain smell of hotel rooms you can detect, but here none! Everything is clean and pleasing to the eyes, staff were beyond amazing! Polite ,very respectful, and helpful. Braised pork is to die for! Definitely recommend, and we will be coming back!

Great location and very spacious rooms, considering the usual space in Japan’s room hotel. Bathroom includes both a bath tube and shower area.
Outstanding amenities, including make up removal cream, tonic, etc, Nespresso machine and daily complimentary bottles of water.
Walking distance to the Ginza shopping area and public transport.
Friendly staff.
The price is slightly over average but it is worthy as it includes a very abundant breakfast, to choose between Japanese or Western/continental options.
