The hotel itself is impeccable in both service and luxury. The staff was always ready to answer questions, provide suggestions, and make dinner suggestions. The room was small in US terms, but felt large. It had everything you needed and was very comfortable.
If you want a very nice Japanese hotel close to everything this hotel is for you. I will stay here again on my next trip to Kyoto.
As most restaurants in Japan will only take reservations through local hotels, we wrote to the Celestine to ask them to help with the restaurant bookings for our stay in Kyoto. We corresponded with the conceirge team a few months before our trip and all the reservations were made. Thereafter, about 3 weeks before our trip, the conceirge team informed us that it is the hotel’s policy that a prepayment is required for all our reserved meals. The prepayment was to be made to the hotel and we would still have to make payment to the restaurants after our meals. The hotel will then give us a refund of the prepayment. I told them that this is an unusual practice. Whilst we have no issues with giving a credit card guarantee or even prepay the restaurants, a prepayment to the hotel followed by a refund will result in us suffering foreign exchange losses as credit card companies’ foreign exchange rates for refunds are lower than their rates for charges. The conceirge team insisted on the prepayment and even said that they would cancel the reservations if we don’t make the prepayment. I asked them why they didn’t tell us about this policy at the time we requested them to assist with the reservations and only a few weeks before our trip, which would make it too late for us to make new reservations as most restaurants will be fully booked and thus leaving us in a lurch. Only then did the conceirge team agreed to waive this requirement.
But this was not the end of the matter...less than 2 weeks before we were scheduled to arrive in Kyoto, the conceirge team contacted us to inform that they had told us the wrong pricing for some of the restaurants. I was so upset that I asked them to cancel some of the reservations, which the conceirge team proceeded to do and all I had from them was a short email to say that they apologise that we had this bad experience! Upon our arrival at the hotel, no one from the concierge team bothered to meet us to explain or apologise to us!
I have never had such a bad experience in all my years of travel. The conceirge team at the Celestine is totally unreliable and unprofessional and the worst that I have ever dealt with. I have even had better conceirge service from more moderate 3 star hotels.
The hotel offers also a nice large bath and a small but pleasant bar.
The service was efficient, with however one important disappointment: I asked for a check out 30 minutes later, and was requested to pay for that. This alone will make me consider to look for an alternative during my next stay…
Outstanding amenities, including make up removal cream, tonic, etc, Nespresso machine and daily complimentary bottles of water.
Walking distance to the Ginza shopping area and public transport.
Friendly staff.
The price is slightly over average but it is worthy as it includes a very abundant breakfast, to choose between Japanese or Western/continental options.
