Walking distance to Memorial park and museum.
Rooms are nice and beds are comfortable.
Kombini is just in front and sodas machines at several floors
The hotel is located about 5 minutes walking to the peace memorial park, and has 7Eleven in front of the hotel.
We had a family of 4. Kids aged 15 and 12. We originally booked a Japanese style room for the 4 of us. However this was our first experience with a Japanese style room. After coming from Kyoto where we had two "double" rooms, the Japanese room seemed quite small. The price for the Japanese room was approx $280 total for 2 nights. We paid more than that per room per night in Kyoto. Ended up changing to 2 "double" rooms for an additional $28 total, ie $308 for two nights for 2 rooms, simply fantastic value. The rooms are your standard Japanese Western room, small bathroom (clean and does the job), 2 single beds (quite comfy), small fridge, kettle and LCD TV. Very little English content on the TV, but that seems standard for Japan. Thankfully the Sumo wrestling was broadcast in English every afternoon. Note there's usually an English button on all Japanese remotes, so if a program has English content it can be changed, but don't expect a lot of choice. Our 2 rooms overlooked the river (8th floor) and faced the Peace Park. They have washing machines and dryers, coin operated, 100yen, ask at reception. They also have a fully equipped kitchen if you need it, ask for key at reception. We didn't see anyone else staying in the hotel. It felt like we had the place to ourselves. This could be dependent on the type of functions being held at the Plaza. The reception staff were very very helpful, and had great English. The Aster Plaza isn't in the middle of the restaurant district, but there was a couple of small Okonomiyaki (google it, Japanese pancake, especially famous in Hiroshima) restaurants across the road. Ask reception to direct you to the Hana-Hana restaurant, small husband and wife setup. Our best meal in Japan.
Don't forget to go to Miajima Island to the south of Hiroshima, easy to get to from the Aster Plaza. I have already recommended the Aster Plaza to friends. You can't book online, but you can email them at reserve@hiyh.pr.arena.ne.jp to make a booking.
We booked a Japanese style room and it was amazing. Big, bright, quiet and super-clean, with all the amenities you could wish for and even more. Very friendly and attentive staff. The Hiroshima Memorial and Peace Park are two minutes away, but you can easily walk to busy streets and shopping malls around.
Highly recommended!
We paid an off-season rate of about $75USD for a large tatami mat room for 3 people with an ensuite bathroom and a great view of the river. The location was within convenient walking distance to the Museum, the A-Bomb Dome and the covered mall. There is a 7-11 nearby for a quick meal of onigiri's and canned coffee. The hotel serves breakfast but it wasn't our type of meal.
The hotel is located on the 8th and 9th floors of the community arts and cultural centre. The city is reluctant to call it a hotel because they don't offer all the amenities and services of a large hotel but it was fine for us! The lobby on each floor had a collection of newspapers including the Japan Times, several vending machines (including ice cream, sake and beer machines).
They have a choice of either Japanese or Western rooms with beds. We choose the Japanese room and it had 4 futons which we had to make up ourselves. The bathroom is a standard unit bath with a shower and toilet in the same room and a sink outside. Slippers and yukata are provided along with tea and welcome biscuits.
The daytime staff are very very friendly and knowledgable about the area.
We totally enjoyed our stay and were surprised what excellent value we received in comparison to a similarly priced hotel room in Canada.
On our next visit to Hiroshima we will most assuredly stay at the Aster Plaza.
The JR Hiroshima station tourist information center booked this for me. It seems few people are aware of this property. It is a government subsidized accommodation to promote international cultural events. It is definitely NOT a youth hostel as the name implies. People of all ages stay here. It is way better than most business hotels I have stayed in Japan. Originally had planned to book a separate night for Miyajima. Am glad that the properties the TI office checked at 2 to 3 times the prices on Miyajima were all booked.
As a side note, unless you have a strong desire to stay overnight in Miyajima, would recommend doing it as a day trip. A tram ride with a simple transfer to Miyajimaguchi station, then a short 10 mins ferry ride would land you on Miyajima. As Miyajima is very touristy, rooms, street stalls, souvenir shops, and restaurants are much more expensive than in Hiroshima.
Also recommend visiting Itsukushi Shrine later in the afternoon as in the morning to early afternoon, the shrine is flooded with bus loads of tourists from various countries overrunning the place. A 2.5 to 3.0 hrs round trip hike up Mount Bisen for the majestic view of the Seto Inland Sea would be an option before hitting Itsukushi shine.
I would absolutely stay here again if I return to this lovely city.
While it is about 10-15 minutes from the station, the buses stop practically at the front door. Note that the hostel is inside the JMS Aster Plaza - the white brick complex is a concert hall - and you won't see a big sign for it on the exterior.
Easy walking distance to major sites and shopping area. Midnight curfew but there isn't much to do after midnight anyway! We found booking online not as easy as in other countries - just call them up to reserve a room. Highly recommended.
Friendly staff and great location, just a few minute walk to the Peace Center.
"We had a great sunset view across the river. It is possible that all the rooms have great views but you could request a river-view."Read full review
