Detailed Reviews
The hostel had a really good feel. A mixture of ages with some learning Spanish and some not. The hostal has free eggs you could collect from the Chicken coup each morning and fruits in the garden. Ricardo was a great host and helped me at the local bank due to withdrawal ossues. The hostal dog is great and just loves to be with people , he even followed us towards town one day

I went for a couple days to Spanish by the river and finally stayed 11 days there. This is a very special place (in a good sense). Is not in the main town (which you can access easily by cheap taxis (less than $1) or even walking if you will to walk for an hour) but this has an interest: I felt like in a farm. They have a really cool terrace with hammocks and other nice furniture and a huge garden, well equipped too and with some hens and a roaster what I think was nice. Also it’s one of the cleanest hostels I’ve ever stayed. They offer a high quality organic coffee from Boquete. It’s definitely not a place for party but for relaxing. Last but not least, Charlie the manager is an amazing guy, very friendly, helpful and hard worker (you’ll always see him doing something to improve the hostel or be sure that it is clean). I left the hostel with a new friend!

I stayed in this hostel from mid-January to mid-March 2017. 2 nights in the dorm and 2 months in the tent. It is strange to see here negative reviews about this hostel. Probably, these people were expecting to get a royal suite and a Hilton service for $ 6. But this is just a hostel. And this hostel is great! The best in Boquete. There is each dorm for only 2 people and a few good tents in a beautiful garden, really сlean showers and toilets, well equipped kitchen. All these facilities are offered for minimal money.
I especially want to recognize the work of the manager Charlie. He is always ready to respond to any request from the guest. Surprising is his patience and tolerance, because sometimes some of the guests were really unbearable; but Charlie always solved any problem with a smile.
PS: (to the one who knows) "You know!!! Ha-ha..." (c) ;-D
Good luck, friends!

Nice room. Comfortable. We only have breakfast on the day of departure. Average breakfast. Very slow service, should improve the presentation of dishes. They served us some eggs on a small plate, cup. It was a breakfast in stages...very regular

This was a beautiful hostel. It is actually a house and the two bed room made me want to bunk down there for a few days. It is so quiet and peaceful. There are lots of lovely places to eat or read outside. The mountains surrounding it are beautiful. Not a very active place but so relaxing and calming.
It is about a 15min ride via taxi or bus into Boquete. The buses and taxis all stop at the bus stop that is a 5 min walk. It is rather hidden on the residential street. Just look for the sign offering spanish classes, the hostel name isn't very visible.

I spent almost two weeks at this Hostal, and since I’m traveling alone, it was great how Ricardo, the Chilean manager, put together group meals quite often...pizza, tacos, eggplant lasagna, Chilean food, and our Christmas meal. The dorms are only two beds, I had one unfortunate roommate who snored loudly, that was rough for me since I’m a light sleeper, but luckily he left, and Lucas was fine. It is a bit out of town, but nearly is Morton’s Bakery, which is great, as is The Garden Restaurant. A shared taxi or bus is only $.60, and takes ten minutes, nice walk into town along the River also. I’d recommend this Hostal.

We wanted to spend 2 nights in Spanish By The River and in the end we spent one week there. It's our favorite hostel so far. The community we had there we never had before we cooked with the whole hostel were looking movies together and had very nice conversations.
Ricardo the manager cares a lot about those things and organisate everything for cooking, movies, popcorn..... the feeling was very familiar and we made friends. Many people wanted to stay shorter and decide to stay. This so far to the social part.
The hostel has a very well equipped kitchen and coffee tee is for free the whole day. In the hostel are living as well some chicken and also those eggs are free.... fruit which are growing in the garden are also included bananas, lime, Orange, Patacones....
We slept in a tent and we had nothing to complain and this for 6$ per person. You can get warm showers and if you need something Ricardo gonna help you for sure.
You have hammocks to chill and tables and benches to eat or play or what ever....
All in all if I would own a hostel it would be like Spanish By The River... We loved it and we miss the comfort and community we had.
The Wi-Fi is not the best but it was nice because no one is sitting there the whole day with the phone!;)
We can definitely recommend to come there.
Thanks Ricardo for the nice time we had!!!:)

I went there after spending 1.5 years in Bocas del Toro. Boquete was not in my plans but the decision of staying there worth it!
Ricardo is a great guy, great host. Makes life easy and welcomes everybody.
Nice house or nice place to put your tent.
Fresh Eggs that you can take, a bonfire with the people that is staying or enjoying the breeze are the high points!

We stayed at Spanish by the River for a total of 3 nights and were greeted with such hospitality. Ricardo (the hostel manager) was extremely kind and helpful. The hostel has an amazing backyard with chickens that you can have fresh eggs in the morning and fruit trees that was so relaxing to hangout at. Showers/bathrooms were very clean. It is located in Alto Boquete (just about 2 min south of the town) and was about a 60 cent cab ride into town. If you are looking for a hostel not in town and want a great atmosphere and good people to hang out with I strongly recommend staying here! I would love to come back :)

Unfortunately the weather during our stay was not so nice, but we were lucky and stayed in one of the rooms. There are 4 double rooms and one bathroom in the main house were the kitchen is. So we didn’t had to get out much. The hostel is not close to the city center, so you need to take a taxi or bus to get there.
