Pension Topas is ideally situated several blocks from the town center. It offers a country like setting in easy walking distance of most Bocquette businesses, shops, supermarkets and restaurants. I spent more than a week at Pension Topas, taking Spanish lessons at Habla Ya, exploring the region and hiking nearby parks and trails. Axel, his family and staff were attentive and provided very good service. Rooms were clean, there was always hot water and the common guest refrigerator and kitchen a plus. Coming from a big city, I especially liked the large, well-manicured yard, garden and talking parrot. Kids appeared to really enjoy the swimming pool and trampoline. Guests were an interesting mix of families, couples and backpackers. While I would not consider Pension Topas a luxury hotel, it is clean, comfortable, friendly and very reasonably priced.

Room Tip: I recommend the double rooms. Private bath is nicer but shared bathrooms are kept clean.

I hated the shared bathroom with a window in the shower. Into the shared kitchen. Kind of creepy. Tiny room but cheap good for 1 night. Remember you get what you pay for. If it seems too good to be true you complete this line.

The location and the accommodation are both good. The owners didn't really welcome us, they have some accommodations and camping spots. We didn't use the pool, but it looked good!
The accommodation was cozy with a great balcony. I didn't liked the blankets very much (bit smudgy) and we didn't have warm water. Overall experience was good, maybe a bit overpriced for what you get.

We really enjoyed our stay there. The pension is very cute, with an amazing garden and large clean rooms. Fernando and Kelly are very nice and always ready to give great pieces of advice about Boquete and things to do in the area. And Fernando makes really good pizzas !! :)

FACT: I got bitten by the pit bull from Pension Topas in Boquete.
FACT: Axel (owner from the hostel) let his 27 year old daughter
(owner of the pit bull) in charge of this situation and she just loved to play a power game, enjoying the fact I could do nothing as a tourist
(leaving a statement at the Municipio takes one month before the police can take action)
FACT: I do not want to tell the long painful story in detail about everything that happened because my letter would be to long and also
is totally unnecessary because one should assume that a client has the same rights like their dog about walking freely on the property.
What I do want to tell is that at first they took responsibility and drove me to the emergency hospital where the doctor took care of the profound bites, prescribed antibiotics, anti inflammation pills, an injection against rabia and needing to go back to the hospital for the next 5 days to take care of the wounds they could not stitch because of being dog bites. So this first visit to the hospital &
medication was paid for by the daughter with a really long face but the extra 5 days I had to visit the doctor, buying cream, gazes, pills for the pain,etc... to take fully care of my wounds to be able to heal properly she did not want to pay for anymore also not for my ripped outdoor pants.(mentioning to me loads of excuses why she was not responsible)
In total I paid $82 out of my own pocket and my pants of $ 65 I will have to pay for myself to replace them as well.
So I put this warning in the hope
nobody else has to go through this really bad experience. There are a ton of other hostel options to find in town Boquete without taking the risk of being bitten and/or treated like I was.
FACT: From talking to neighbors and nurses I am not the first one who got bitten by their pit bull but I do honestly hope I'm the last one.

The Pension Topas was the dirtiest place I have ever stayed. I was in the charming town of Boquete and needed a place to stay for the night. I read my guide book and thought that the Pension Topas would be a good place to stay. When I arrived the room was still not ready so I was asked to come back later. Upon my arrival all appeared well. Once the sun went down is when the filth was discovered. There were cobbwebs on the wall. Insects were flying and crawling throughout the room. The room smelled like an old cigarette ashtray and a cheap bar. The "clean sheets" smelled as if they had not been changed in a seriously long time. I had to wrap a t-shirt around my pillow to try to take away the horrible odor of the sheets. (I ended up throwing the t-shirt away because of the nauseous stench that was impregnated onto it). I could not sleep and the day did not break soon enough.

The room was $32. Since the facade is deceptive, it looks quite charming, I thought that it was a good price. Boy was I deceived. I would have rather slept in the car to save money or paid a higher price for a decent place to sleep. DONT STAY HERE.

I first when to this hostel about 10 years ago during a trip around panama in 2002. I really enjoyed all the Tintin paintings (I would read all the books when I was a kid). Overall the first stay was nice. This stay however, was much much different. To break down the rooms from what I know you have three different types. First you have a few rooms around the court yard that seem to be very nice. The price seems to fluctuate but I was last quoted 36USD for one of these rooms... busy time in Boquete. The second rooms were in the back of the yard and were nice the last time I was there. They were occupied when we tried to stay there a second time. The third room is 100% horrible. Seems cute from the outside, but It is a shack, with an outdoor bathroom. We have traveled a lot and sleeping a room with an outdoor bathroom is fine, but if that's going to be the case then please have a way to keep the bugs (i.e. very large spiders and centipedes) off the bed at night, either a screen on the window or a bug net over the bed. I have spent plenty of time sleeping with bugs but have never paid 18USD to do so. When we woke up there were plenty of bug bites to go around, the worst being a major bite on my girlfriends knee that caused problems for a few days (maybe a spider bite). The roof is also loose, and will shake loudly all night if there is wind (which there always is). Overall, the owner was nice enough, last time I stayed there the breakfast was great, and if you want to pay for the $36 rooms (Im sure they vary during the year) your time there will be great, cable tv! but whatever you do, do NOT stay in the simple double room/storage shed, you'll know your in when you see it! Needless to say, we left the next morning and found a great place a block away with en ensuite bathroom for the same price.

Room Tip: Suites by the back patio are cool and spacious. Don't choose the double with shared bathroom.

For sure the outside is very attractive, pretty colourful facades, an original universe inspired by Tintin, activities for everyone (swimming pool, volleyball, trampoline, slackline...). The place is even referenced in the Lonely!
But the room is shabby, dark, dirty, uncomfortable... and equipped with a safe box (since our arrival in Panama it was the first time we had one available, we were delighted to use it... if we had known!). We had the unpleasant surprise of coming back in the evening and finding that it had been opened (the cover for inserting the security key was on the floor), our things had been searched and money was missing. The main door was locked, so it was an internal theft. Instead of showing compassion and understanding the situation, the owner got angry and immediately asked us for our passports and payment (which he should have done when we checked in, but when we arrived he wasn't there to greet us, the next day he saw us but didn't deign to come and meet us). Not to mention the "robbery", we didn't like this atmosphere, until now our previous guests had shown us a lot of sympathy, listening to us and being available to help us organise our stay (in this period of pandemic, the link with the few customers is something precious... obviously not for Pension Topas!)
We remained very calm in this situation (and in the face of their accusations, because obviously they tried to turn the situation around, saying that it was a ploy not to pay for the nights) although we lost all confidence in the establishment. We were forced to pay for the 3 nights (minus a small compensation for the stolen amount), and to stay (the theft took place on the 2nd day... we didn't sleep very well, as you can imagine!).

These unfortunate events are part of the travel but we hope that through these few lines, other travellers won't be fooled!

We camped and found the facilities OK. It was very cheap and met a lot of other overlanders. The kitchen is small but cleaned often and there is a pool. The owner and his family were fine.

Now if you have children I would avoid this place at all costs. There are two pitbull-like dogs who are really friendly in the daytime. They love to be stroked. In the nighttime however, completely avoid going near the one with the black spot on her face. We came in at night after stroking the dog all day and it bit me on the hand and I required stitches. The family paid for the medical treatment luckily and helped us a lot.

We count ourselves lucky as I was able to withdraw my hand and receive relatively minor injuries however if it was a child it would be a different story.

The garden is pretty. The host gaves very good advices for hiking. The room was ok. Private room with private bathroom. Even if there is a sign saying that there is hot water, on a 10 minutes shower we barely have 1 minute shower. We didn't sleep well because there were an annoying roaster screaming all night.
It wasn't expensive so it was ok for 2 nights.
