The accommodation was cozy with a great balcony. I didn't liked the blankets very much (bit smudgy) and we didn't have warm water. Overall experience was good, maybe a bit overpriced for what you get.
FACT: Axel (owner from the hostel) let his 27 year old daughter
(owner of the pit bull) in charge of this situation and she just loved to play a power game, enjoying the fact I could do nothing as a tourist
(leaving a statement at the Municipio takes one month before the police can take action)
FACT: I do not want to tell the long painful story in detail about everything that happened because my letter would be to long and also
is totally unnecessary because one should assume that a client has the same rights like their dog about walking freely on the property.
What I do want to tell is that at first they took responsibility and drove me to the emergency hospital where the doctor took care of the profound bites, prescribed antibiotics, anti inflammation pills, an injection against rabia and needing to go back to the hospital for the next 5 days to take care of the wounds they could not stitch because of being dog bites. So this first visit to the hospital &
medication was paid for by the daughter with a really long face but the extra 5 days I had to visit the doctor, buying cream, gazes, pills for the pain,etc... to take fully care of my wounds to be able to heal properly she did not want to pay for anymore also not for my ripped outdoor pants.(mentioning to me loads of excuses why she was not responsible)
In total I paid $82 out of my own pocket and my pants of $ 65 I will have to pay for myself to replace them as well.
So I put this warning in the hope
nobody else has to go through this really bad experience. There are a ton of other hostel options to find in town Boquete without taking the risk of being bitten and/or treated like I was.
FACT: From talking to neighbors and nurses I am not the first one who got bitten by their pit bull but I do honestly hope I'm the last one.
The room was $32. Since the facade is deceptive, it looks quite charming, I thought that it was a good price. Boy was I deceived. I would have rather slept in the car to save money or paid a higher price for a decent place to sleep. DONT STAY HERE.

But the room is shabby, dark, dirty, uncomfortable... and equipped with a safe box (since our arrival in Panama it was the first time we had one available, we were delighted to use it... if we had known!). We had the unpleasant surprise of coming back in the evening and finding that it had been opened (the cover for inserting the security key was on the floor), our things had been searched and money was missing. The main door was locked, so it was an internal theft. Instead of showing compassion and understanding the situation, the owner got angry and immediately asked us for our passports and payment (which he should have done when we checked in, but when we arrived he wasn't there to greet us, the next day he saw us but didn't deign to come and meet us). Not to mention the "robbery", we didn't like this atmosphere, until now our previous guests had shown us a lot of sympathy, listening to us and being available to help us organise our stay (in this period of pandemic, the link with the few customers is something precious... obviously not for Pension Topas!)
We remained very calm in this situation (and in the face of their accusations, because obviously they tried to turn the situation around, saying that it was a ploy not to pay for the nights) although we lost all confidence in the establishment. We were forced to pay for the 3 nights (minus a small compensation for the stolen amount), and to stay (the theft took place on the 2nd day... we didn't sleep very well, as you can imagine!).
These unfortunate events are part of the travel but we hope that through these few lines, other travellers won't be fooled!
Now if you have children I would avoid this place at all costs. There are two pitbull-like dogs who are really friendly in the daytime. They love to be stroked. In the nighttime however, completely avoid going near the one with the black spot on her face. We came in at night after stroking the dog all day and it bit me on the hand and I required stitches. The family paid for the medical treatment luckily and helped us a lot.
We count ourselves lucky as I was able to withdraw my hand and receive relatively minor injuries however if it was a child it would be a different story.
It wasn't expensive so it was ok for 2 nights.
"I recommend the double rooms. Private bath is nicer but shared bathrooms are kept clean."Read full review
