This hotel has the best of both worlds - a ryokan but with Western beds. Since it was our first nights after arriving, we opted to just use the Western beds, but it was great to have the ryokan room there to see the traditional style. The staff were all extremely kind, especially in the dining room, where after the first day I had bumped my knee on the low table, the staff had remembered and put us to sit straight away at a higher table. Breakfast was a delight, as a Japanese style with lots of little things to eat, but the staff would then also bring fresh green tea, rice, and miso soup. On the second day we were also given bacon and egg. The outdoor onsen has beautiful views of Beppu bay, and is such a great, calming way to start the day. Staying here was a beautiful way to start our 3 weeks in Japan.…
Our room was so close to the water, with views from the seating as well as the bath. Good size room with tatami mats - but we also had western style beds for comfort. Morning sunrise views were priceless. An easy walk to the station. Hotel staff service was outstanding!
We booked at least 6 months in advance and advised in the booking that we had a 5 year old child. We had booked the superior japanese/western room (401) as there were 2 western beds and 2 futon in the room. However upon arrival we were informed that this room only had two western single beds. When asked about the 2 futon beds we were told that the room had a max of 4 beds but if we wanted an extra bed (a third bed), we would have to pay an extra ¥3300 for someone to come and lay the extra bed - a futon. All of the futon bedding is available already in the room and if you use the bedding, you will be charged!! We were extremely disappointed as the hotel already knew we had a 5 year old and didnt provide the extra bedding charge at the time or after booking. When we addressed this with the hotel they took no responsibility and advised us to speak with the booking agent even though the hotel gave the information about the room to the booking agent in the first place. The facilities in the room are old and the fridge was banged about, bathroom sink and outdoor bath had debris in, small piece of carpet near the window area was stained, tatami was not vacuumed well, windowsill had not been wiped properly for a while. The only redeeming feature was the view but for AUD $430 a night (taking advantage of the rugby World Cup game in Oita), this hotel was twice as expensive as Tokyo! I have been to Beppu before and will come again but I would stear clear of this place!…
We spent 3 nights at the hotel in a Japanese style superior room with sea view. It was lovely. Huge room with a private onsen bath that looks out over the sea. We didn’t book the meals package as there are so many restaurants in Beppu and we prefer variety. The location of the hotel is ideal - only 10 or so mins walk from the Beppu train station. Service was excellent. All staff were very friendly and welcoming. Upon arrival the staff tool took our bags and escorted us to the room - fully explaining the hotels amenities. Every staff member we met spoke excellent English. A great place to stay. Expensive but that’s not unusual in onsen towns. We definitely recommend this one.
I would like to share my experience with the Personel of this hotel. This hotel has taken me one night cancellation fee (380 euros - around 43000 Yens) for a non stay. My mistake : I have sent a notification for cancellation 5 days before the cancellation date. With jet lag, I did a conversion error on the amount but for the Personel and Staff it seems normal to pay one night when you do not stay at the hotel. IT IS A HUMAN ERROR, but they do not understand. When I called them to apologize and repeat that it is a mistake they say that they have just seen my email (sent 2 days ago) and ask me to press button to cancel and gave me hope that they will review cancelation fee. Be careful they do not have good english as they suppose and do not respect the clients. No consideration for the Guest and future Guest. This hotel has a cancelation policy on their website different from one with booking.com there is a Non compliance of the policies. This is a Lack of professionalism : the website says 0% fees cancelation 5 days before receiving the notification, then 10%, 20% and so on….here they decided to take everything and after negotiation with booking to take 50% are they aware of non consideration of client? This hotel has not respect and withdraw money for 0 night stay. This hotel ( The staff) is not reactive and does not understand english This bad adventure lets us a bad impression of Beppu and we will never go back there. When we work hard all year to have holidays time, we do not want to waste money and time in this stupid behaviour. They are thieves, do not go there. I want to get my money back. there is no reason to take my money moreover the hotel was full during O-BON week.…
We stayed at Unikaoruyado Hotel NewMatsumi for 1 night. The lobby is very pretty and the corridor on each level is also beautifully decorated. We stayed in the Japanese style room and for the regular room, it is very big with a big main area with one area with a coffee table and chairs. The room also has a showering area. The outdoor onsen is much smaller than expected and thus it may get awkward when there are more than 6 people soaking in the onsen. As I went in the night, there was no view to see but I believe you will be able to see the sea from the outdoor onsen in the day. As for the indoor onsen. It is very large and spacious. The changing area and make-up area are also large. The indoor onsen also have large windows for the ocean view which make it a very enjoyable process. Overall, it was a great stay.…
That was my solo trip to Beppu, i appreciate their good service, i always like traditional japanese hotel especially onsen hotel. Silent, good location, good service, and good view and reasonable price
The hotel staff were waiting outside as we arrived and immediately took our luggage to the room. And from then on the service was great. Our tatami room was furnished nicely and had a view of the ocean (the grounds between the room and the ocean are to be made into a park in 2019 according to the city signs, so it well look better). There is a bus stop nearby or you can walk from the Beppu Station. This hotel also happened to be near the APU dorm 4 where the exchange students reside, so it worked out nicely as my son is going there. The onsens were nice, I used both the indoor and outdoor onsen. As noted in a review below, if you stay multiple days, each breakfast appears to be different. There was plenty of food and an excellent assortment of meats and vegetable with a staple of rice and miso soup. The smoke smell that another reviewer noted was not too frequent and was isolated (there are a couple of smoking areas in the hotel).…
Nice staff but seriously needs a renovation. Smells like tobacco (except in non smoking rooms). Onsen water sometimes dirty. Mold stains in the bathroom. Next to the see but view on industries. Non swimmable beach (dirty) 5 minutes away. 1 day prior notification needed for breakfast and room cleaning.
Good location and good breakfast to start the day. Nice view from the private onsen. The staff are extremely nice and helpful and there's an English speaking intern that help us with our ways around the town!
