I have stayed at the Nikko Hotel in Kumamoto several times. However, this stay was to be a three-month stay for my Fulbright Scholar’s award to conduct research, network, collaborate, and provide lectures throughout Japan. Because of the unprecedented COVID-19, the world changed and the U.S. State Department requested my return to the U.S. I felt so safe that I was somewhat reluctant to returning to the U.S. because they hadn’t even mandated the use of masks or social distancing. Once travel becomes safe again, I most eagerly will return to Kumamoto and will only plan to stay at the Nikko Hotel. I would like to extend my deepest personal gratitude to Rooms Reservation Manager, Mr. Munehiro Mio who made sure every personal requested detail was honored, and to the entire team at Nikki Hotel for a wonderful stay during a difficult time. Thank you for making me feel very comfortable and, most of all, safe. A special acknowledgement to Ruwan Pathmathilake (originally from Sri Lanka) who personally stored all my luggage during my trips to attend meetings, and who was the only one who spoke fluent English. Most Fulbright Scholars bring along their families to experience the culture of their host country. Unfortunately, my husband was unable to join me because of his own practice, so it was very important for me to be in a safe and convenient environment while living in a country where I did not speak the language. There is very close monitoring and security of who enters the elevators. Upon return, I was always warmly greeted and escorted to the elevator by staff. As the elevator doors close, this very special staff member deeply bows which is certainly not practiced in the U.S., which always makes me feel very honored. Whether for business or pleasure, Hotel Nikko is the perfect place located with Tsuruya department store and a fantastic upscale grocery store directly across the street, a new bus station close by with eateries and shops, direct bus services (to airport), street trolleys, and two arcades filled with boutiques and restaurants. There’s even a Starbucks located directly outside. But, my most favorite is the patisserie (bakery) located within the hotel who has the most delicious fig and walnut bread rolls… I always bring several home and can’t wait to go back just for these rolls. The only things lacking (besides more English-speaking staff), is access to a business center and gym. Other than that, Nikko Hotel is the place to stay when in Kumamoto. Be sure to request a room on one of the two top floors that have been recently renovated, with direct views of the Kumamoto Castle. Each room is equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine. Thank you ALL from the bottom of my heart for making my stay in Kumamoto truly memorable and for making the first part of my Fulbright very special. I can’t wait to return to my home away from home.

Two of us stayed here for a week in a room measuring 12 feet x 13 feet. Very tiny and thus my low rating! Our bed was pushed against the wall - only way it would fit - so that my husband had to crawl out the bottom if he didn't want to wake me. There was no where to put anything, barely any closet space and 3 narrow drawers filled with hotel items. Our bathroom was also very small although it had a tub/shower combo. The room and bath were clean, well lit and there was good in room wifi...Few staff spoke enough English to be able to make requests, etc. There was no comfortable area for small groups to meet outside of the expensive bars and restaurants. The hotel is in a great location, near the castle and in the middle of shopping.

I stayed here one week for business. Pros: Nice location, a lot of shopping and places to eat nearby. Breakfast was great. The room was very quiet, even when many rooms turned over and a lot of housekeeping staff on the floor. I arrived during the night and slept late. Did not hear a sound and was surprised when I left the room to see so many housekeepers working in nearby rooms. They were so quiet, much appreciated after very long flights. The room was very clean. Cons: The bed was quite hard. Food was VERY expensive. Room service for a club sandwich and some fruit was almost $50! Two cups of tea in the lobby bar about $18. Unbelievable. This might be the reason the man in the lobby bar was very pushy that we order tea on the two evenings our team had meetings there. There is no business center and no private meeting spaces unless you pay for them. Many staff had minimal English and that posed some problems at times. I definitely want to recognize Mr. Tsubasa Kumagawo in the lobby. This young man was very helpful to me at many times. He was kind and patient. His English was very good. This gentleman should be promoted from a bellman to a manager!

I give this hotel full marks for location, decor, bathrooms, breakfast, parking, and friendly staff. We found the adjacent shopping arcades delightful. My only slight negative comment is the bed was a bit hard. I would gladly stay there again. The breakfast was outstanding.

The location is perfect (center of the Suizenji Garden and the Kumamoto Castle). If you're not for the garden and the castle, shopping street is just right beside and across from the hotel. The bus stops right in front of the hotel and in less than 100 mts you can take the tram to and from the Kumamoto Station. The breakfast was great and good selection. The staff were very attentive to your every need. Kumamoto water is potable from the faucet. Shower was great and bathroom is spacious. Loved this city and like to come back. I got a room facing the castle, and the view is great especially the night time as you can see the castle lit up. Very nice indeed.
