A typical local travelers hotel tucked right next to the Kamitoricho shopping street where food options and convenience are abundant. The nearest tram stop is about 300m from the hotel, and the Shinkansen station is about 20mins by tram from the hotel. All major tourist attractions are also within the vicinity. The hotel has aged over the years but has been very well kept. Rooms are BIG for japanese standards, clean, toilets look very new, and basic amenities like body wash, towels and kettle is provided. Coffee is provided but you would have to walk to the reception to grab a cup. Room is sufficiently insulated and a central heater will keep you warm during winter. However the partition between the rooms are thin so noise from the next room can be audible - we had a occupant snore so loudly that it was faintly audible in the room. It is also worth noting that the footsteps and slamming doors from the corridor may also be heard via the front door. Lastly, although some of the staff may not speak English well, they are very helpful and accommodative - just whip out your google translate and have a conversation with them - they will gladly oblige.

The air quality in the room is really bad and very humid, there's stains on the bed, chairs, towel and also toilet. Also we found an insect in the room!! The cleanliness should be highly improve~ However, the location is good and actually the staffs are very friendly and helpful, only the tidiness and cleanliness is unsatisfied:(

I stayed here for only one night. We selected the double room here because it seems to biggest room size among the hotel around with the same price. The hotel located in the good location behind the shopping street. The front is on the second floor. The staffs were very helpful and super polite (as Japanese style). Our double room was good, but little bit old style furniture except the TV was new and big. No free water in the room since they claim that the tap water can drink. Our breakfast were selected from two choices (Japanese style or Western style), nice food but it is a little bit small amount compare to the price (no buffet). Overall, this is the warm place hotel in a good location (5-10 min. walk to Kumamoto castle). One problem here is the check out time is a little bit early (10.00 am) !!

The Hotel Okus was a great place to stay the hotel was clean and very close to the shopping arcade. The hotel is a little older so the rooms were very large for a Japanese hotel and the a/c worked great. The price was also very reasonable.
