I debated on a 2 or 3 star rating for this place because staying at a ryoken's can be a nice experience if done well. There are good points about this place but we had such a poor experience that I must base my review on the treatment from the host that we received, more so than the better aspects...

Most foreign visitors to Nara are daytrippers so prices are lower for accommodation than Kyoto, but English is less widely-spoken. The Kankaso Ryokan is situated on the western edge of Nara-koen, two minutes walk from the Todai-ji housing the Great Buddha. It sits among a row of tourist shops but deer can be fed a few steps from the front...

We stayed here during Sakura season and found the rates extremely attractive versus what was available in Kyoto. Most people do a day trip to Nara from Kyoto but a night here should definitely be considered. If you are a first timer to Ryokans you will really enjoy is experience. A veteran of Ryokans will enjoy this too but maybe...

All in all it was a good experience. The room was a nice size and the view of the garden was beautiful. The onsen was nice and available for private bath with no trouble. The staff were sweet and gracious. The room was nice and warm due to the electric heater. I did not have dinner, but did have the...

We loved our stay at Kankaso. The Kaiseki dishes were absolutely stunning, the onsen was unforgettable and the garden was gorgeous. Lucky we were so near the sights of Nara or we would have never left. There was a little old lady who spoke no English but showed us a wonderful time and I can't recommend this place highly enough.

We stayed here for a couple nights and really enjoyed it. They don't speak too much English here, but the service is superb. Our garden-view room was nice and spacious. The only downside was that it was so cold out that we didn't have the doors open too often to take advantage of it (didn't want to let the heat...

Had a great time, wonderful food, and very nice room. The "general" as we called her, did her best to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and guided us through the expected protocol. The baths were amazing and relaxing. The views of the courtyard were stunning. The location near the temple and deer park makes it very easy to access the...

We found the entrance to this Kankaso between gift shops on the road beside the Deer Park. My immediate concern was likely noise. However, I need not have been worried, once we were through the gate it was like being in a different world. This was an excellent stay, the food was superb and the staff very attentive. We had...

We enjoyed a lot our separate room with bath and toilet. It was very spacious and quite. The service from both ladies was great. They were very patient with us and gave us tips about how to enjoy better the food. Which was really, really good kaiseki. When we check for rates this place seemed expensive for us, but after...
