Very far from Kinugawa hot spring station, 1.5 hours local bus and 30min shuttle bus by this ryokan. We went to this place for 2-days family reunion at early April. We enjoyed absolutely fantastic Japanese dish at every evening and morning. I cannot admire enough these delicious foods which are not soy-sauce-full, Kanto-like taste. On the second day, menus differed from the first day (dinners and breakfast). Rooms and the lounge are also comfy. We spent plenty of time In the lounge, enjoyed reading (as we planned), "gomokunarabe", and free massage chair. There was also a "Shogi-ban". Even though the snow was piling up outside, the wood stove warmed the lounge enough. The hotel stuff (most of them are from other Asian countries) work enthusiastically. We shall return!

Hatcho No Yu is as beautiful as it looks in the pictures, has an excellent, friendly staff, and serves amazing meals. Staying there got me out of the hustle and bustle of urban Japan to a quiet place where I could walk for quite a while and see no one else around. It's not exciting, but sedate. If that sounds appealing, here are some tips: 1. If you're a hiker, ask about the condition of the nearby trails. The canyon where Hatcho No Yu is located is very steep and the trails tend to double as streams. Some were closed when I was there. But the scenery is gorgeous everywhere. 2. Consider bringing snacks. There is no box lunch service -- probably the biggest shortcoming of the resort. To avoid having to go back for lunch hour, bring something to eat. 3. If you bathe, try different pools. Some are hotter than others. 4. Don't worry about sitting cross-legged at low tables. In the dining room, there are regular tables and chairs. Also, tables are assigned, so don't worry about not getting seated. 5. If you take transit from Tokyo, give yourself plenty of time and try not to worry about all the connections and delays. Typhoon No. 19 made it a full-day trip for me, but one that was interesting at first and then utterly beautiful in the mountains. 6. Don't worry about language. Not every staff member speaks English, but I was always able to get my questions answered, and interacting with the people there was always a pleasure. 7. Consider going with someone else: It's pretty much a couples and families place. Going alone was a little odd.

You can enjoy hot springs in mountain side with reasonable price. 3 coedo outside hotsprings plus female and male indoor hot spring and one outside hotspring for female available. Tatani room and bed room are available.

One must really struggle with memory to recall something going wrong during a stay in Hatcho no Yu. Friendly and nice personnel, splendid location comfortable rooms, fascinating structure, excellent onsen and an over the high standard cousine... What else? The only thing that could be a nuisance is that the corridor lights aren't completely filtered by the screen doors (it has not been a nuisance for me though). Thank you Hatcho no Yu: if i come back to Japan i'll do my best to return there!

This is one of the most remote Onsen ryokans we’ve visited (the other is Ubayu Onsen in Yonezawa) requiring a 2hr bus ride from Kinugawa Onsen, followed by a ryokan bus ride of another 20mins. Weather has gotta be on your side, otherwise its Onsen, drink an be merry and sleep. We had a log cabin room with western bed. There’s heating but no air conditioning. Room is large and comfortable with attached toilet. There are 2 mixed rotenburo (ladies in bath towel permitted) and another for ladies only. Both face a cascading waterfall framed by beautiful autumn leaves. There are gender gender indoor baths but these are small. Water is hot and slightly sulphurous. We added wagyu beef for the 1st night dinner and had duck with the standard meal for the 2nd night. Staple for both dinners was a yuba-veg hot pot. Dinner were good and substantial for us, but we do not have big appetites. Breakfast was good too. We took a walk uphill towards the 2 other nearby ryokans and the autumn leaves color was most beautiful. We met 2 hikers who had just come down from Mt Kinunuma (2,000m) and they told us it was snowing (in later Oct!) and showed us pics of snowmen! We visited the Onsen in Kajinyu Ryokan. The is a mixed rotenburo (ladies with bath towel permitted) and a ladies only. View of small waterfall and beautiful autumn leaves. The water was hot and slightly sulphurous; milky in color. Well worth a visit at ¥500pp. We will certainly re-visit Hacho no Yu in autumn again.

Loved the service and hospitality at this place. Dinner served was not overboard but very satisfying. The only issue I had was that the room I was in could be much better heated up given it can really be cold in winter. The corridors all the way to the room were also freezing cold literally. That is the uncomfortable part. The only way to avoid the feeling of being frozen is literally to probably get into the onsen as much as possible. The outdoor onsen was fabulous with one of them having great views from the bath. Although there were 3 outdoor baths, 1 of them is not usable as it was not warm enough for the freezing winter weather. This was compensated by another one which was extremely satisfying and in my opinion, might be way too hot for anyone who is there on a hot summer day.

This place is located in a remote area, inside a national park, the Inn has a shuttle bus that picks up and drop off guests from a public carpark/bus stop.We went to Hatcho no yu,as a day visitor to try their onsen baths on the property. The day package was to use their onsen baths (3 outdoor unisex onsen baths, and 2 woman only onsen baths and 1 men only onsen baths)from morning to early afternoon and lunch inclusive. My partner and I ended up just soaking in the outdoor onsen baths which was great it snowed all day and it was so peaceful and beautiful in the mountains. The baths and change rooms were clean and regularly attended to,there are vending machines for drinks and the staff were accomodating. We didn`t see many guests that were staying there though I knew it was fully booked. Lunch was really delicious too. Definately would go back again and stay a night or use the baths again

Large but very tarditional ryokan and onsen, konyoku (mixed), with outside baths (3 mix), + one for women, and inside baths. Very comfortable, nice colours in October, mapple three already turned yellow and red. Nice kaiseki style food.Long way from Asakusa, but direct line (1.5H), no Change at Kasukabe, take the bus at the terminal station, then another small bus to the onsen. Nice for spending a week-end, rather good quality-rice ratio. to recommend.

Stayed one night in Feb 2013. This B&B is in a very remote area. From Kinugawa onsen station it takes a further 2 hours of bus ride to reach the meotobuchi stop. (only 4 buses per day) The bus ride is one of the most scenic ride i have ever taken. From here the B&B shuttle bus will fetch you to the B&B (further 30min ride). Room is traditional and basic. You will be sleeping on the floor futon style. The highlight is the outdoor onsen. There is a ladys' only outdoor bath and 2 mixed outdoor bath. Soaking in the bath out in the nature with snow falling is a magical experience. Paid only 10000yen per head which includes dinner & breakfast. Definitely value for money.
