If you are looking for a break from the madness that is Tokyo and want to experience the other side of Japan, enjoying the wonder of its untamed nature then you couldn't go far wrong staying here. It is a little out of Nikko but the host operates a shuttle service to pick you up at the train station. Swim in the stunning river, walk the woodland paths, and enjoy first rate veggie cooking.

We came to Nikko in Autumn for hiking in the fall colours. It was such a fantastic stay. Scout is very knowledgeable about the area and had personally done all the hikes we were looking at doing. He was able to use his expertise to get us around most of the crowds, happily accommodated our vegan diet and the shuttle was quick and punctual. Beautiful location. Great vibe. Thanks for such a great stay Scout!

I wish I had more time here, it's a wonderful hostel in an idyllic setting on the river and close to the forests with lots of hiking. The distance may deter you, don't let it! Scout is an amazing, hospitable host and makes it easy for you to get the hostel and around to the different attractions in Nikko with his shuttle service. The hostel has some BEAUTIFUL private rooms right on the river, if I ever go back I will definitely stay in one of those. The dorm and shared spaces are very cosy and warm. Scout made our stay here perfect! We arrived on a late train and were worried about not having dinner or anything to eat, he whipped us up some soup in response. I cannot recommend this place enough, if you're a backpacker, a couple or want more privacy. There are options for everyone!

We where there for a three nights stay and really loved the location. We booked the private annex former traincar and loved it. The location is in the middle of the nature by the river but what is great is that Scout, the host drives you to town and does pickups completely free and is very flexible as well. We loved the breakfasts and soups Scout cooked for us, the whole athmosphere and the extremely loveable Japanese grandma who runs a restaurant down the road. It is such a chill place to unwind and relax and have access to the city center as well. Thanks Scout for the great stay, it was the highlight for us on our holiday.

We booked for 3 nights and extended to 4 nights as the location was so amazing. Set in a stunning forest with crystal clear river rushing past that is safe enough to swim. The large, covered patio area where breakfast is served is perfect to just sit back, relax and appreciate nature. There are also couple of Japanese style, tatami mat bedrooms that are perfect and cosy for that little bit of added privacy if dorm accommodation is not for you. When staying at Space Riverhouse, please remember that you have booked an amazing location and have traded off the convenience of the city for the beauty of isolation. The owner; Scout, will pick you up from the train station on arrival, deliver you back on departure, and will conduct multiple, courtesy dropoff/pickups to the city of Nikko each day for his guests. If you need to reach Nikko out with the courtesy dropoffs that Scout provides, please arrange your own private transportation and don't be annoyed with the free service that Scout is so nice to provide. There is no local convenience store nearby, so ensure you pick up supplies from Nikko before you arrive. Scout offers a homemade vegan soup for mealtimes or there is a home delivery service about 5 miles down the road that Scout can call for you. I cannot wait until we stay again. Steven & Penny

The space river hostel is located in a very beautiful area. Perfect for swimming, hiking and star gazing. This could have been a 10/10 unique perfect hostel that i would pay more for if the host knew what he is doing. Scout does try but he has no idea how to run the place. He is always disappearing somewhere and even when he is around he is not very helpful. Scout is very chaotic, he is always making list or talking to himself. This would have not been a problem if the hostel was located somewhere else. You have to rely on Scout and his shuttle service to get anywhere. Our first night when we did not know better we where stuck there with no food. And even the morning after it was a pain to get to the city in a decent time. You can't just go away and ignore him and that is the problem here. When we where getting annoyed we where getting no where Scout was very rude to us. It was a pain since we only had a few days in Nikko. Do not go there if: - You have limited time in Nikko - You like to plan your days - Can't stand chaos If you have plenty of time and are the whatever happens happens kind of person this place could work out for you. But i would not recommend it.

Although spaceriver hostel is located about 20 min outside of Nikko, scout offers a pick up and drop off service. He is willing to oblige your requirements, you just have to be clear when you want to leave/be picked up. The hostel itself is located right on a river which makes for an amazing location for your morning coffee. He cooks a delicious breakfast/dinner or can organise takeout from the local Japanese restaurant which remains one of the best meals I've had while in Japan. The communal space, outdoors or indoors is great for meeting fellow travellers and getting advice on the best hikes to do. Highly recommend Mt Nantai for those up to a challenge - the brochure describes it as 'so steep' and they are not lying, but the views make it all worthwhile. Definitely a highlight of my trip to Japan!

First thing I'll say is that nobody should be put off by the location of this hostel being far from the town. It's not an issue at all because the owner, Scout, runs a shuttle bus service into town every morning and picks you up in the afternoon also. He is flexible with the times also, so if you wanted to get up early for a longer hike then this is possible. He has extensive knowledge of the sightseeing bus timetables and can drop you off right on time to catch one, with your 2 day bus pass in hand and knowing which bus to catch to get back again. Scout makes a hearty, tasty breakfast for all the guests every day which makes a great start before you go hiking or sightseeing. He coordinates it all so that he has time to cook for all the guests as well as run the shuttle service into town. The whole process really is seamless because his guests don't have to worry about a thing, except which of the beautiful trails to hike or which UNESCO heritage listed sights to see. He is also a fountain of knowledge in regard to the hiking tracks so he can advise you on that as well. I had the most relaxing, stress free week here of my 6 months travelling in Asia. The hostel itself is spacious, clean and perfectly situated on the side of the river. The noise from the river gives you a peaceful night's sleep as well as blocking sound from travelling to the sleeping rooms if there are party people staying at the hostel. It really is perfect both for people who want quiet or who want to party into the early morning. We stayed in the 8 person dorm and it was so quiet and comfortable. Scout coordinates the sleeping areas so that you can get a good night's sleep by not allowing snorers and asking people to move away from the rooms between 11pm and 7am. There's a kitchen and bbq that you can use

Scout is the absolute man when it comes to hospitality. He really goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is satisfied. The location is also stunning and I can't wait to go again! Make sure you bring clothes to swim in the river!
