My husband and I spent the last leg of our Japan trip at the beautiful Mikawaya Ryokan nestled in the mountainside in Hakone. It was a one day stay since it was a bit of a splurge but was worth every single penny. Getting there: We arrived at Odawara station from Kyoto. I highly recommend using either the coin storage... We stayed in the Japanese style villa so our experience relates to these rooms. Not all rooms are the same and don't all have meals in room like we did. If you do stay in one of these villas you will not be disappointed. loads of room your own garden with own onsen all privately screened from everywhere else and... More

Mikawaya is a real gem. A real sense of culture and history oozes off it, and the rooms are wonderfully decorated. The staff are some of the friendliest and hospitable people i've ever come across, where nothing was too much trouble. Wifi is only available in the reception area, but the breathtaking views in the surrounding area make it easy... More

This is an 18th Century Ryokan built over a hot springs. We saw things there that you only see in museums, including three large meeting rooms with the original screens. Set along side a beautiful stream carved into the mountainside, we had a room with a private Japanese style hot bath situated in a rock garden. On the fourth floor... More

Mikawaya is a wonderful Ryoken with community and in room onsen (if you get the rooms with open air bath or the double wide suite they have private onsen). This is a lovely, historical old place (main building ~130 years old) with charming staff who make your stay special. We had a Japanese style room with open air bath and... More

They have a staff who speaks English quite fluently so no worries about that. This place is over a hundred years old and you can enjoy the old historic architecture including the Onsen spa. The food was superb. They changed the menu for us when we found a dish we'd rather not eat. There is a bus stop in front... More

Just left the Mikawaya after a two-night stay and have rarely felt so relaxed (and so clean!). Our room was in the modern wing and featured its own mini-onsen on the balcony, allowing the whole family to bathe together in the open air. It was our first experience of a traditional Japanese inn and at every turn the staff were... More

We stayed here recently and were very pleased with everything. We stayed in two different rooms because we booked a bit late, but everything worked out wonderfully well. Our first room had an in room bath, which we enjoyed and was in the newer part of the ryokan. The meals for this room were served in the dining room and... More

It's my first visit at Hakone. I love the peaceful environment of the mid-hill with so many colorful flowers surrounded. The Ryokan is quite historical and they are quite proud of that. They provided welcome tea and dessert when we check-in. My room is located in the old house (main building), with in-room open air hot spring. The room is... More

We stayed one night at this Ryokan and we loved it. The service is great, very friendly stuff. The room is very good with an onsen in the room with hot waters from the Vulcan. We didn't read the small printing and we only realised they didn't serve dinner in the room when we arrived. They only serve dinner between 6pm... More
