This is a great hostel within the grounds of a temple. All the rooms are all Japanese style and very comfortable (complete with electric blankets.) The staff put in a lot of effort to introduce you to the hostel and are helpful. Good location and there's a great breakfast cafe across the road!

I was drawn to the web site for this Temple and expected an atmospheric temple stay. We were deeply dissapointed as we are Buddhists from the UK and had chosen this place especially. It looks fab on their web site, but it is a bit run down and not very friendly. Clean bedding though. Good location and reasonably cheap (but...

Very nice and unusual experience. The room was big, Japanese style (paper doors). Very clean. The beds had like an electric mattress (we slept like babies). It's more expensive than a backpacker hostel but we wanted to feel the experience on staying in a temple. I totally recommend it.

The place is not well kept, there is no lock for your room, There was a family who stayed beside my room and was very noisy, i could here almost everything they were talking about. Location is a little bit of a walk from takayama JR station. The guy who manage the place does not seem to care that much...

I stayed for 2 nights and it was a good experience. The place is a mix experience between a hostel and a temple. The owner, who is a monk, is very nice. He briefed me about how to get around, good sights, and places to eat in Takayama. I wouldn't say that you will get an authentic temple stay experience...

This place really has atmosphere. The slightly rambling hostel is wrapped around an authentic Buddhist temple, where you’re welcome to take place in the daily ceremony if you wish. The temple inn has a real hostel atmosphere with a very well-equipped kitchen, compact communal room, showers with a booking time list, public computers and wifi. The staff member we dealt...

Zenkoji is a hostel, and I can say it is the WORST I have been in in Japan. We were "welcomed" by a guy from U.S. who showed us around and explained us the rules of the hostel. I cannot say he was rude, but certainly kindness is something else. There is no possibility to lock your belongings because there...

The hotel fee is very expensive because the temple is old and dirty. If the fee is 1,000 JPY, we will feel normal.

The temple was recommended to us by a family member. We had a fabulous stay. Absolutely loved it. Unfortunately we could only stop for one night. Close to the station and the directions to get there were spot on. We walked from Takayama station and found the temple without any problem at all. Room was more than we expected. Clean...

We thought that staying in a Buddhist temple would be a charming addition to our trip through Japan, but we didn't count on the paper-thin walls and lack of heat when we booked a night in March. Let's just say that we checked in, realized what we were in for, and decided to head to Takayama's local pubs to fill...
