Ryokan Tanabe introduced us to Japanese style hotels. it is very well located in the charming city of Takayama- just a few minutes walk from the morning markets. If you have not stayed in a Japanese hotel- as we had not- it is a very different experience; private dining on Japanese style food and Japanese breakfast- no compromises! The Tanabe does...

This was an amazing experience.Hot mineral pools. Kimonos to wear . Amazing spread of traditional dishes laid out in our room for private dining.Low level dining and then beds made up for sleeping on the floor in traditional style. Great ,comfortable sleep. Full traditional spread laid out for a private breakfast in the same style as the evening Wonderful staff....

Ryokan is 10 mins walk fro station . It is a Japanese stye hotel and a culture lesson for us . It was spotless and staff could not do enough to ensure your stay was great . Please look at web site to see room layout etc as it would take me a long time to explain . We had...

Ryokan tanabe felt a little more like a conveyor belt hotel than the traditional and intimate experience I had hoped for. Breakfast was only served very early in the room, which meant that the bed had to be removed to make room for the breakfast because the room was so small, the staff seemed very rushed all the time.

This was the first ryokan I've ever stayed at and it was a fantastic first experience. The service, the food, everything was exceptional. There is a japanese bath included in the ryokan (stone or wood, depending on the day) which was perfect after a long (cold) day out in Takayama. It's about 10 minutes walk away from the train station...

This was our first stay in a ryokan, so we were a little nervous and excited. But, from the moment we crossed the threshold, the service and kindness was exceptional. You will want for nothing, and understand everything. The food was amazing, the facility excellent, and the location perfect. We stayed in more ryokans during our trip, but none came...

We enjoyed our stay a lot, the whole experience felt very warm and local. The owner lady is lovely and so so friendly, felt like we were really guests staying over at her place, you don't get that in hotels. Everybody is raving about the food-yes the food was next level. Presentation, deliciousness and overall experience-everything was great. We had...

This place is extremely clean and tidy. There are free Japanese bath and delicious meal. The rooms are equipped with everything you need, plus the staff is very polite and helpful. It's easily accessible with just eight-minute walk from the Takayama bus station.

I've been to many ryokans throughout the years and this is hands down THE BEST. It is authentically Japanese. The reception was cordial and helpful (English friendly by the way). We got to choose our own yukata and they can help you put it on. They recommended some places for us to visit in the area. The room was absolutely...

Ryokan Tanabe is a fantastic place. The staff are super friendly (and all appear to be over 70),the service is excellent, the food is authentic (although we are struggling the with Japanese breakfasts). Rooms are spacious and have a TV and WiFi - which was a pleasant surprise. Sleeping on a futon was interesting on the first night, but you...
