Last time I visited another Hanaoug located next street, it was really great! For this Iiyama, we loved it as well. The service was great and the food was fantastic! The staff Tomoyo is extremely helpful too! We had the onsen in our room and it was really nice! Both Hanaoug are good choices in Takayama!

This is our third visit to Japan and we have stayed in many fantastic hotels and ryokans but Hanaougi is simply superb. From the minute you enter until the minute you leave you are made to feel very special. Our room (this does not begin to do it justice) consisted of a huge sitting room with adjoining Japanese bathroom and...

My family and I stayed at the Hanaougi Bettei earlier this month in Takayama. The property is a retro ryokan that is staffed by friendly and professional personnel who created a unique and personal level of service. From the moment we arrived, the staff greeted us outside and accompanied us into the hotel/ryokan. We were attended to during our stay...

We went with our parents and took two rooms! It was our first ryokan experience and we absolutely loved it! Service was awesome! The kaiseki dinners and breakfast was superb!! Loved our two nights stay there thoroughly. The onsen had indoor and outdoor and I loved the outdoor one...

We stayed at Hidatei Hanaougi (Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama's sister hotel) few years ago and liked it a lot. So we decided to try Bettei on our second visit to Takayama. Bettei was a smaller establishment but much newer, compared to its sister across the street. Our room, divided into bedroom and living quarters, was nice, spacious, comfortable and felt very...

The ryokan staff beckoned us to the parking lot, even before we realised that we already reached our destination. Check-in was a breeze, with Japanese green tea and sweets. Our room was next to the vending machine, I gladly inserted 500 Yen coin and grab my beer to unwind the stress from long drive. Our butler spoke English very well,...

The first two nights were wonderful and we even thought the comments on tripadvisor were too harsh. The third night a family with two small kids moved in the room next door and since, it has unfortunately only been a nightmare. The whole point of relaxing, enjoying the private onsen, getting full sleep lost its purpose. I don't think I...

The room was a suite with ensuite private onsen, and it was very nice, the dressing room, waiting room, washroom. I felt the ensuite private onsen was just a tad lacking in the set up; little things such as the decor and atmosphere, the feel of the tub, the texture of the wood. (that said, the lobby, and building, as...

Like so many other travelers, we really wanted to get a feel for the traditional as well as the ultra-modern Japan. Having just come off a whirlwind few days in a warm spring-time Tokyo, teeming with hoards of Japanese and international tourists crowded around every cherry tree displaying even the slightest hint of a blossom, gaggles of anime-baby-doll-styled women and...

We stayed here for one night when visiting Takayama. We have stayed in ryokans before but this one didn't really compare favourably as it fell between two stools - halfway between a traditional ryokan and a hotel - and was neither one thing nor the other. The accommodation and the food was perfectly nice but it didn't have a particularly...
