Detailed Reviews
My friends and I found this place on the internet and decided to book it because it was an attractive looking hotel for a bargain price.
The hotel certainly stood up to our expectations, but on arrival, Dan the owner noticed an injury on my leg which I'd sustained about 4 days earlier, in a scooter accident.
We didn't know it at the time, but Dan (the owner) knows pretty much everything there is to know about Phuket - from the right price for the right tours, the local scams to watch out for and even where to seek medical treatment.
Well, he basically took one look at my gross scooter leg (which at this stage, was starting to swell up and was dark red) and called for a taxi to take me to Phuket International Hospital. The taxi was cheap, and waited around for hours while I was getting my leg treated. It turned out that it was badly infected and I ended up needing an IV drip antibiotic for 4 days.
For the rest of our stay, Dan was an invaluable source of information. You can ask him just about anything related to what you want to do while on your holiday, and he will give you a straight answer about how to do it, where to do it, and how much it will cost (and if there's a chance you'll get scammed).
So in summary, great hotel, great staff and great advice - nice on, Dan!

Kelly's hotel is 15-20 minutes walk (depending on speed) from Patong beach, but the walk is an enjoyable one straight through the tourist hub of bars, restaurants, shops, etc. The hotel itself is located on a small hill in a quietish street removed from the noise, but within 2 minute's walk you reach the lively areas.
It has a nice, small/medium sized pool and a homely feel to the lobby, bar, entrance area. The bar and seating area opens out to the pool, providing a relaxing space. The owner / manager Dan is a real character, a big old-school Aussie with a colourful history. He enjoys having a chat with his customers and is proud of his menu. Their breakfast menu is awesome - traditional bacon, eggs, toast, etc. using quality ingredients plus an unusual offer of Salmon poached in milk served with lettuce and balsamic vinegar - yum! Cappucinno's are served with cinnamon on top and for lunch you can get a range of toasted sandwhiches. They don't do dinner and the menu variety is small, but extremely tasty.
Dan's wife Tan is also very friendly and helpful. Overall, they managed to provide a homely hotel with good service. The rooms are your standard hotel variety, but they are clean, modern and a reasonable size. The third floor and above offers sea views, although by this I mean views of the sea between buildings. Great value for money and a good place to stay.

Have just returned home to
Oz after our 2nd stay at Kellys, this time for 16 days. 2 years ago we stayed in the penthouse rooms [1 for us and the 2nd penthouse room for our 3 kids] when the hotel was being managed by Tim. We returned in 2012 again taking over the 2 penthouse rooms, this time round we met Dan + his wife Tan who have resumed management of their hotel. Although we personally had no problems with Tim in 2010, we found that with Dan back at the helm, the overall running of the hotel and it's facilities was alot smoother and more efficient then in 2010. Was good to have WiFi available in the rooms, it may have been a little 'hiccuppy' at certain times but at the end of the day it is Thailand and we were more than happy to have access to the internet. The staff at Kellys were always cheerful and friendly, even though English is not their first language, we had no problems and they were always more than happy to attend to any requests we had. The rooms were always cleaned and serviced everyday - even though a few times we forgot to put out the door sign asking for the room to be made up. It was great to meet Dan and hear his stories and to get advise on any queries we had about where to go or what to see, we found it refreshing to get 'black + white' advise and not some fluffy hotel marketing . We can highly recommend the chicken that is cooked fresh each day not far from the entrance to Kellys, it is devine and very cheap at only 200baht, the kids loved it as well. The night food markets a 5-10 minute walk from Kellys [just outside Banzaan Market] were also great value for money if you wanted to try a variety of meals without the price-tag of a restaurant, can also recommend 'Meena's fried chicken' from the night food market, we all felt it left KFC out in the cold. Another local restaurant that we loved for lunches was located in the Otop Market - called 'More Ma' the cold fresh towelette that was given as you sat down was much appreciated, their food was delicious and a great price. We ate at a couple of 'proper' restaurants but mostly found that the locally run kitchen-restaurants were just as good if not better, one of the restaurants though that we did eat at and loved was at the northern end of Patong [probably into Kalim Beach area] called Pan Yaah, it is on a cliff edge that looks back to Patong - great views of the beach. The night markets at Phuket City were great and cheaper than some of the Patong markets, we got there early [5 pm] and by 7:30 it was packed. If you're not into the adrenalin rush or the usual tourist haunts the fairly new Phuket Botannical Gardens is a great place to visit, amazing themed garden areas, sculptures, plants, water features etc. even the kids [15.13 + 10] found it great - feeding the fish and running through the waterfall feature. The Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa was great value for money as well. We had a brilliant 2nd stay at Kellys and have nothing but praise for Dan, Tan and his staff, it was a pleasure to stay there and we will definately be back in 2014 [if not sooner]. Also thanks Dan for introducing us to the Mangosteen fruit ! had seen this fruit before but never knew how to eat it or what it tasted like, after being coaxed into tasting it, the kids were hooked ! it is delicious. After reading some of the negative reviews posted of Dan + Kellys, we found that nothing could be further from the truth - sadly there are probably some people that will never be happy no matter what. Keep up the great atmosphere that is 'Kellys'.

Response from KellysOwner, Manager at Kelly's Residency
Responded 28 Sept 2012
Hi nzrudy. Thanks very much for taking the time to write a very informative review, yes sadly today anyone can write whatever they like on a blog unchecked, I’m hoping one day for a reciprocal blog, that would be fun, nothing we can do about it we wear them even though their false and vindictive, truth has nothing to do with it and we’re hamstrung answering, and they never stayed with us. My greatest pleasure is in giving as I have fulfilled all of my needs in life, in Kelly’s I come into contact with a lot great people, the Local knowledge I have comes from people like yourself, new tours restaurants what’s good and not good come from the hundreds that stay in Kelly’s, I listen and pass this information on, this is what makes Kelly’s a great hotel, it’s the personal contact and the free information you can’t get in big impersonal corporate places, they take your credit card give you a room key and that’s it, pay is their motto nothing free. I have been in hotels a long time and survived mainly on word of mouth, we’re too small to burn big bucks on marketing and paying commissions so we have to be better, and a big part of being better is giving lots of free info. No way anyone can get off a plane and know what we know about Phuket and it’s intricate ways of doing business and the mine field of scams, and us being on the ground and not an office we get to see and hear more, this place teaches you humility and patience, it take a lot of years to learn how it all works in Thailand. We deal with the street people that also survive on word of mouth, and that makes us all very good we use one another’s knowledge, we’re not part of any multinational company with the fluffy marketing and have to pandy to shareholders and large profits to cover the excesses, we are the real people in the real world dealing with other down to earth realists, life is always the way it is and not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s taken me years and a lot of mistakes to know enough to be able to share it, now that I have this knowledge I give it for free, upside is we get the positive talk and everything runs smoothly, what to do and see they are just one phone call, no more sorting out scams or dud tours we’ve done 98% of that, it saves you a lot of time and money and us a lot of hassles, and the more successful we are at gathering information and sorting out scams and problems the happier we both are and that computes to big savings. Also these savings can go a long way towards paying for your room, savings that you cannot get elsewhere, you got what it was all about and got the best out of your holiday and that shows in this review, small thing like exotic fruits and special tours and restaurants and place to go can only come from those of us that have survived in small long established family businesses from talking at ground level. Thanks a million, Dan & Tan.

Trouble at Kelly’s
I had a horrible experience on my arrival at Kelly’s, my first booking at the place after many, many years of happy holidays elsewhere in Patong. It prompted me to leave immediately and find another hotel.
The owner (if that’s who he was) will probably say that I was an arrogant, unattractive character who behaved badly on arrival and upset his staff. I will say that he was bad-tempered from the start, took no time to pay attention to what was going on and erupted into a fit of aggressive, foul-mouthed anger with little or no provocation.
Kelly’s make a big fuss on their website about booking one’s airport arrival taxi through them. I (and a friend also intending to stay there) did this five months before the holiday, and I confirmed my arrangements by email a week before. We received what looked like very efficient confirmation, with comprehensive contact details.
There was no driver waiting for me when I arrived at Phuket airport, more or less on time. I waited fifteen or twenty minutes and then called Kelly’s. Whoever it was who answered didn’t seem to know who I was, so I made a second call to another hotel number. The driver would be there shortly, I was assured.
A driver did then turn up with a hastily scrawled paper which he said he had just had to write in his car, not having had previous notice of the trip. At one point on the way he asked me where Kelly’s was. I began to think that things at Kelly’s weren’t quite up to the standards they proclaim on the website.
On arrival I was greeted by a charming young receptionist in a chaotic little office, and I asked him (in Thai) what had been the problem with the taxi. He became rather flustered and took out papers and files, including my confirmation email of the previous week. He clearly had no idea what had been happening, so I was saying never mind and let’s check in.
At this point I became aware of a large farang standing at my side, who then asked what the problem was. I said that the taxi hadn’t arrived and was asking what had happened. He went into an immediate minor rage and berated the boy, told him to phone the taxi company, grabbed the receiver from him and proceeded to [--] and blind down the phone in a thoroughly alarming fashion. I was already deeply uncomfortable and anxious about the kind of place I’d booked myself into.
After that, things just went from bad to worse. Suddenly the full force of the owner’s wrath was turned on me. I conscientiously avoided becoming angry, but said how unpleasant all this was, that I was simply asking why they had not sent a taxi as agreed, and was disappointed that my first encounter with the place was so difficult. The owner continued to swear and insult me until the point that I said I would not stay with them, and that they had just lost the custom of two guests for a total of two weeks. He indicated indifference to the loss of cash and suggested I wasn’t the kind of guest they wanted.
In fairness, he offered to take me to another hotel – an offer I refused, wanting to be out of his presence as rapidly as possible. (There was aggression in the air.)
I texted my friend (arriving on a later flight) and told him we weren’t staying at Kelly’s. In response to his mail to Kelly’s cancelling his booking, he received a reply reflecting the deeply flawed opinion that Kellys had already formed of me.
Apart from factually untrue assertion about the taxi (it was not waiting), the brief response is full of distorted, negative perception too. The aggression and the nastiness came entirely from the boss who dealt with his own staff and the taxi company, and then with me, in a manner and with language which was provocative, deeply offensive and shocking. One remains mystified how so many others have found the place so overwhelmingly charming.
My friend and I moved to another, reliable establishment, where I have stayed before, and if there’s anything near to a perfect holiday world, it’s there. The kindly welcome was a relief after the turbulence of Kellys. We had a narrow escape.

Response from KellysOwner, Owner at Kelly's Residency
Responded 3 Sept 2011
This type of review to anyone with common sense has to ask themselves how does booking into a room go bad, you have to be here in person to see the antics of this reviewer, how can booking into a room get you into trouble, it’s not rocket science, behave and be polite, should do it, be nice and you will never have trouble, “common sense is the word” This is the second time this person has put on a “malicious review attempt” first one was taken off, this one is in under the “check in” experience, and completely “different” and nothing like what happened; And “terrible” Kelly’s is not, the review is terrible, for a start he never stayed here, we never let him, he was unceremoniously asked to leave, the review is based on and incident the reviewer brought on himself. He abused Thai staff and submitted everyone to terror tactics because the taxi was late, and that’s if it was really was late, nothing to do with us if the taxi was late, we have done our job, in our 100 star service, you have email address, phone numbers of the taxi company all contacts, everything is in place for you to call if there’s a problem. There can be many reasons for a taxi problem, most of the time it’s because of human error, you went to the wrong exit, your bags were late, the plane was late, no parking spots, you didn’t see him with his sign, in this case a piece of paper, instead of patience you reined your abuse on Thai staff at Kelly’s, From the airport to Kelly’s is a long time to stay upset, you should look at an anger management course. Taxis can be a problem for many reasons, we fixed most of these problems with our 100 star friendly services that you never got to experience, and in reality that small problem you turned into a mountain all by yourself. You never stayed here and had an opinion based on nothing you experienced here, but one you created here, you had a problem with a taxi, you never stayed at the hotel yet abused us, and hotel is terrible, how ironic, that is. You had an opinion based on a late taxi, and rated “terrible” a hotel you never stayed in, and you as a sole reviewer want everyone to believe your an innocent fine upstanding person that did nothing to deserve getting told to leave a hotel because you did nothing wrong, just being polite and going about your business being the friendly fairy, will not get you kicked out of a hotel, you abused a Thai staff for no other reason other than a taxi was a few minutes late, you “were told to leave” and we offered you a lift to another hotel, “you had that part in your first review that we offered you a lift” deleted in this review. You used a very pompous loud aggressive and abusive manner to talk down to a Thai boy just doing a job with nothing to do with a late taxi; I was standing 50 meters away when I first heard you yelling. Your gripe was with a taxi being late, nothing to do with the Thai me or anyone that’s life, thing don’t always go to plan, we do our best with the taxi scam and organize everything to the best we can, you did get here so why all the noise, not something to abuse any one over, but you did and it didn’t turn out so well, maybe if you had of seen me first you might have been more polite. I could hear your yelling from the pool area, I walked down to see what was going on and “stood behind you”, you never notice me standing and listening to you loud ranting, you went on and on about nothing and determined to make the young charming Thai boys life miserable, I could tell by his face he was upset with you, so I tried to enter to see what the problem was, and the big mistake you made, you “strong armed me with your elbow” you stopped me from coming in the door, blocking my way with your aggressive body language, you never bothered to look to see who it was, you were using you size to stop me, at that stage, you didn’t seem to notice or care, to busy giving the boy a verbal payout, first you don’t elbow people, you could not hear me over your own loud voice. You did not see me or look to see who was behind you, I was trying to get passed you, you ignored my request to get passed, you were too busy being a nasty old man, I moved you out of the way with a polite but firm excuse me, and asked what the problem was, and you then wanted to treat me as subservient to you, you got caught out abusing the Thai, and embarrassed at the fact you did get caught out, then you trying to save face by talking down to me. I offered to drive you to another hotel, Aussies have a problem with the subservient thing, you persisted in having your own way and I persisted in having mine, all petty stuff and here we are with more petty stuff, I refused a room to you and offered to drive you to another hotel, I would have paid for it to get rid of you , but no you demanded to be taken to you room, and no by now I didn't want you, and here we are two old blokes both upset, a very bad tempered British “pretend gentleman” and an Aussie that’s not putting up with your abuse over something that was not our fault, imagine what else you had in store for us, if we let you stay, I have been that road, more abuse, not likely. Hotels are not waiting for someone to come along and abuse them, there are boundaries and we have limitations, and you sir bent all of the rules; I am not and will not be subservient to anyone’s abuse. You say I was bad tempered from the start, wasn’t it you that got upset at the late taxi, and wasn’t it you that started abusing the Thai, wasn’t it you yelling and attracting attention, wasn’t it you that used his elbows to keep me out of my owns office, wasn’t you with the aggressive body language blocking the door, did I do any of that to you, no, and your upset because you got caught out standing over the Thai boy, you’re a big guy intimidating a small guy with your size, a big guy that that didn’t see me behind you, bullies are like that and bullies always complain, and you are not the kind of guest I wanted to have, your to uppity, angry and demanding, plus you lie on reviews. Up to the point before I heard you yelling, you never seen me, now why would I bother to come and listen to you booking in unless you were causing trouble, I had to break off a conversation to see what you were upset about, and the narrow escape from Kelly’s a nice touch to the pantomime, The only true part is where you write, I will say you were arrogant and behaved badly, funny about that bit, why did you write that. (The owner (if that’s who he was) will probably say that I was an arrogant, unattractive character who behaved badly on arrival and upset his staff. I will say that he was bad-tempered from the start, took no)

We picked this hotel based on the TripAdvisor ratings and the hotels website. We liked the concept of having a 'local' recommend how to get around and order excursions. The experience was nothing like the website promise. Dan did not give options or adequately explain what he did recommend. He repeatedly mentioned that he did not want to be there. We were not comfortable around him and changed hotels as soon as we could. There was no other English speaking staff around when we arrived.

Other people writing reviews are fooling people, really. This is one of two review by this person about the same thing, I spoke to you on arrival straight off you asked a barrage of questions, and then you say I didn't give you any options on what I told you, I gave you everything I had, how can you mark rooms down and not stay, and how many options do I have to give, I do it for free and there was no pleasing you, you wanted to go sailing, go on a phi phi Island tour, go on a city tour, go to markets, go to James bond Island want to know all prices on everything and how much is a bus to markets, how much is a taxi, I gave you answers plus to all the questions that I knew, your here for two days and got the best I had on offer and there was no pleasing you, just a barrage of questions and mind changing wants, you could have found all the information in a folder but no you wanted my personal 10 star attention and got it, and the prices were given to you by the taxi girl, a half day tour 1-600 Baht and 600 Baht to markets and wait two hours was too expensive for you, and you argued with me because I said "about" 1-500 Baht for half day tour, the taxi wisely took off she had enough, you should have argued with her it’s her business I just make it easier for tourists to find things by bringing together tours and taxi’s I do this for free, and 99% of those people thank me for saving them money and time, so you can believe all the good reviews but not this one. For you all the prices were too expensive, to quote you "I'm not used to paying those prices" but how would you know you have never been to Phuket before an no one has ever complained about prices everyone says to cheap, I agree, I'm fast running out of things to say so I shut up to avoid an argument, and when your kids starting telling me I'm drunk and insane and to top it off "your scaring us" all because I stopped giving any more information, they had it all, and the scary stuff language, now that scary, it is to me. And your aggression with the old clichés "what is your problem" and I'm sexist and scary, all antagonistic stuff all because I ran out of information and stopped there was no use continuing, I told you if you wanted to find cheaper tours and taxis and buses to markets you might find them down the road in the small booths, you asked how much cheaper and I told you about half price and they have cheap hotels to, you replied you don't want us here, ha, with all the abuse and the conversation was out of control I said if you’re not happy and offered to drive you to another hotel, you declined and went from talking too much to the silent treatment, It was over I lost interest is right, I told them I’ve had enough there was no pleasing these people and abuse was over the top, I walked off and went home, and when I got home I was greeted by a barrage of the foulest email I have ever read and that's saying something, and for the record I don't drink and not drunk, Yes I'm insane to do the job, and more so to do it for free.

After reading the excellent reviews on Tripadvisor we expected a lot more. The cheap price accurately reflects the 3 star quality of the hotel. The Australian owner tries to be helpful but we just found him overbearing. But he gets points for trying. You usually get what you pay for, and this hotel is no different.
Location wise the hotel is about 15 minutes from the beach, and about 10 minutes from the main shopping centre in Patong. The road to the hotel is quite busy so I would not recommend families with small children stay here. Room was clean but would fill up with dead bugs towards the evening, whatever surface spray they are using does an excellent job! Bathroom is stuffy with no ventilation, and the shower pressure left a lot to be desired.
I would say this hotel is best for single men looking to sample the infamous night life in Patong; as the man next door to us was doing. Don't stay here as a couple or family.
I would recommend a couple or family check out the excellent resorts on the beach. You can't beat the Thai hospitality. Why go to Thailand to stay at an Australian quality hotel?

Response from KellysOwner, Manager at Kelly's Residency
Responded 8 Jan 2012
This review contradicts and fly’s in the face of every other review written, it seem that its main aim is to personally attack me and do damage to Kelly’s reputation, and make a mockery of people that have taken the time to write reviews, and the reviewer goes on to attack other guests staying in Kelly’s hotel, in your review you write “I would say this hotel is best for single men looking to sample the infamous night life in Patong; as the man next door to us was doing. Don't stay here as a couple or family” when this reviewer looked at Patong all you saw were negatives. The statement you made “why go to an Aussie quality hotel”, this is more an attack on Aussies running hotels , we call this the tall poppy syndrome, if you had of opened your eyes you would have seen it is owned and run and fully staffed by Thais, and for your information I do all the work here for nothing plus as a foreigner I own nothing, any hard won profits all go to feeding, clothing, housing, and looking after a lot of kids and their families, things like their schooling, medical, and dental care, plus any Kelly’s profits gives their parents jobs and look after the old people back in the villages. Tan a Thai owns and runs the place like all thai hotel for her family, she is a main prop because she can speak English and Thai, and without her I couldn’t survive or do anything here, and without me their life would be tough. There is no welfare here, Tan and I are it, like a lot of Thai hotels its these family’s that work for next to nothing to give you a cheap holiday, and the over cheap massages and every other cheap thing tourists get, working for nothing is a humbling experience for me. Putting focus on me using my name as if you really know me, after two short conversations you had a false perception of everything, You say” I’m over bearing, but I did try”, these are two loose phrases without substance, I get the feeling your trying to belittle me, the statement I “did try”. I not only try I’ve been at it for 35 plus years and I am highly successful here and in Australia and being successful in au’s triggers the tall poppy syndrome, sadly some hate success in other people, I never said anything when you were staying here, but I did pick it up you had a few issues with men money and success, you tried to belittle me, I ignored it then, but you couldn’t help yourself to have a cheap shot at me and Kelly’s hotel in your review. The statement you made “why go to an Aussie quality hotel”, this is more an attack on Aussies running hotels, and again it’s called the tall poppy syndrome. In all of my thirty five years in hotels there is one thing that really stands out apart from people’s naivety, is the people that want to pay the least, continually pushes prices lower, over barter, wants everything for nothing, and are the meanest, never happy, and they are the biggest complainers. As for telling people not to go to a hotel run by an Aussi, nothing could be further from the truth, there are so many pluses in our favor, it seems everything positive escaped you, too much of your time was spent on upsetting yourself and listening to the man in the room next door, and to call him a sampler of the famous patong night life because he was staying at Kelly’s is a bit rough, he might have had his wife with him, you just guessed ? The things we do for free save you money, we sort out things like language problems, taxi and tour scams, lots of information and free knowledge is given on tours. It took us years of mistakes to learn, we give sound money saving advice. You mentioned Thai hotels, but talked about cheap in Chang Mai when you were here, I got the feeling it was about screwing the price down telling us how great they were, funny all my life in hotels, I hear down the road and up the road are always better, cheaper and greater. Thais are friendly and sometimes exploited and over submissive to tourists, sadly that’s the Thai way and sadly they get used by working for nothing trying to please tourists and don’t seem to be able to say no, they are lovely people and it pains me to see tourists keep bartering prices down and down abusing their Thais generosity, this continual pushing prices below profit creates more poverty, and the go broke rate is extremely high, 600 to 1-000 Baht is not a fair price to pay for a room it’s not even close and we don’t and won’t do it, some people think these silly cheap prices are the going rate it not and still want cheaper, it’s the go broke rate, we know because we tried it and lost money. We save the tourist big bucks, we organize tours for free, and get special prices, and you say don’t go Aussie, but we make sure the tours are the ones with the least hassles. Tourists don’t have the time or knowledge to do this, the quickness we can get you on tours and trips with the best price, at the fast rate of a different one every day at the cheapest price, we are there when you leave in the morning to make sure the buses turn up, and we call them if their late, booking offices can’t and don’t give this service, we do the exhausting job of getting all your taxis organized to save you getting ripped off or scammed at the airport, time consuming and stressful with never ending phone calls, and we never get kickbacks or ask for them, we’re just happy for everything to work smoothly, and look out if it ever goes wrong we cop it on a forum. We have sorted out most if not all of the scams, you cannot possibly know about all the pitfalls and scams because my ten years here equates to knowing more than your ten minutes in Thailand and your review focus on none of that, to you there is nothing good about Kelly’s, your review really is extremely inappropriate, The standard of our rooms is equal to if not better than most, but not according to you, full of bugs, and perhaps next time you should discuss the issues with us so we can help you, instead of writing about it when you leave, plus you got it all wrong. To take any notice of this reviewer is to help you to have a pretty unhappy and expensive holiday, this raises my suspicions as to the motive being just personal, not pleasing you personally doesn’t rate an attack on the whole hotel. As for being no good for kids, we have a lot of families and kids stay with us, more as the years go by, and as for this hotel being just for men that’s a good one, judging by this review you have some serious man issues, what can I say, and as for patong having infamous night life, only if you look for it. I do see there are hundreds of different trips and tours for families, restaurants, lots of shows the likes of Fanta sea, the zoo, all the elephant trekking, go carting, white water rafting, stacks of stuff for families and kids, all the great beaches and beautiful islands, far too many to put in here, and you only noticed the decadent bit, I don’t know about that stuff and I live here, you must have had some very late nights because if there is decadence it way past my bed time. I’m one of those people that sees good in everything I don’t look for bad, is there something wrong in your opinion about men on holidays and the hotel they choose to stay in, you are recommending family’s to stay in the beach area where all this night life is supposed to be, and as for the beach hotels being Thai, most are owned by big foreign corporations who employ and exploit those Thai people who you like waiting on you hand and foot.. As for distance to the big shopping center a few years ago I used to do it in four minutes, now days I do it in 6 minutes so I guess you’re a lot older than me taking ten minutes, life does that to us all. The road is busy; there is not a road in patong that’s not busy, or even in Asia for that matter. And your right about the fact that you only get what you pay for, at Kelly’s you get a great hotel a great room at a great price, I don’t know how you failed to see that as it’s very obvious to others, or maybe just a comparison with cheap Chang Mai hotels where your observations were clouded by price only, there is no comparison with Patong and Chang Mai two different places because it’s a rural part of Thailand, maybe you’re doing what a lot of travelers do just trying to force the price and quality down to suit your price needs by continually bagging hotels with false comparisons and prices and service that don’t exist. This is the only bit you got right… (Why go to Thailand to stay at an Australian quality hotel?) Quality being the operative word, you sure contradict yourself a lot. As for the rooms on the one hand you say their clean, on the other you say full of dead bugs, and on the point score you mark it down to mean unclean, what do you really mean, it seems you changed the details of the review to suit your personal attack on me. I find down grading a hotel is normal procedure for some review writers. To survive in Patong we have to have a lot of knowledge, just like all heavy duty tourist areas it’s full of pit falls. And your recommendation of the Thai beach front hotels in patong are you kidding they are not a patch on ours for price or quality this is just you talking rubbish, have you ever paid for a beach front hotel in patong I doubt it, if you could have afforded one what were you doing in Kelly’s, I don't think I can say much more about this review, but thanks anyway all reviews are helpful in some form or another, even if it’s to show the comparison between how some tourists think and behave..

Stayed here for 9 nights with a mate of mine. The best thing about staying here was
the size of the rooms and the information freely provided by Dan and his team, both verbally and on paper. We stayed on the 4th floor and that provided us with fantastic views of Patong from our balcony. The hotel itself sits on on top of a hill away from the centre of the action. Its
a 10 minute walk to Bangla rd and a further 5 mins to the beach. Kellys doesnt have the facilities, finishing's or service you would find at most 4 star rated hotels. In my opinion its in
need of a makeover to justify the 4 star rating. That being said its still good value and a nice
place to stay.
This is a bit off topic but if you do stay their and your sick of asian food everyday, there is Dutch restaurant just down the road that does western style food and western style portions if you know what I mean.

Hi this review you marked everything down and are so far out of whack it’s not worth answering, you haven’t a clue about hotels, especially finishing’s and service, you have never ever seen as much service as you got at Kelly’s, you stayed 9 day, and “that being said it’s still good value and nice”, is that not contradictory to all your box ticking, or was that deliberate. It would take too long to get it all into all into a meaningful perspective. Thanks Dan.

This hotel is beautiful and the staff is friendly, Except for the owner. When we arrived he began to immediately stereotype and talk slander. He presented himself as poorly behaved and sexist. We had no choice but to find another hotel immediately. If you decide to stay here I surely hope that you have a better experience.
I would not recommend this place to anyone due to the very poor customer service that the owner displayed.

After reading all the excellent reviews for Kelly's, we really were expecting an amazing experience upon our arrival. However, if I'm honest, it was nothing special.
The taxi pick-up charged us 600 baht, even though we'd read in guide books and heard from others that the standard fare from the airport to Patong is 400-500 baht. He was also an extremely careless driver (although everyone in Thailand drives irresponsibly, this driver was by far our worst experience of all. I genuinely feared for my life) and tried to overcharge us (he told us the fare was 800 baht, and only after much negotiation did he consent to accept 600). I cannot blame Kelly's for the driver's conduct, as they are not directly responsible, but I do believe that if the hotel insists that they organise taxis for guests in order to avoid 'taxi scams', they should at least ensure that the drivers are safe (by Thailand standards!) and honest.
The location of this hotel is definitely it's biggest downfall! It was such a distance from the main shopping/entertainment area that I would have felt unsafe walking in the area late at night, and from our ocean view room the beach was a tiny detail on the horizon! I would say that it takes AT LEAST 10 minutes to walk to the beginning of the shopping area (Banzaan market and surrounds), about 15 to Junceylon or Bangla Road, and no less than half an hour to the beach. Dan if you claim you can do it in 6, you must be sprinting!
The layout of the hotel was also a small dissapointment. From the pictures the pool and outdoor area looked large and inviting, but in reality the hotel is built on a very small piece of land and the swimming pool is extremely compact. It was neat and tidy, and no doubt a nice place, but not what we expected from the photographs: we found them slighly misleading.
Aside from the above mentioned issues, we were satisfied with the rooms at Kelly's, and the staff/family all were extremely helpful/polite/lovely. The children especially were very cute!
I have no intention to spoil the reputation of Kelly's, nor condone it as a no-stay. I'm just honestly stating that although Kelly's is a great place to stay, and does constitute good value for money, there are also many 'Guesthouses' right in the center of the beach, shopping and entertainment area that cost half as much and although they do not have swimming pools, the room quality is almost identical to Kelly's.

We recently stayed at Kelly's had initially booked for 8 nights however decide to leave after 3 nights. This hotel is not for everyone, there are some good points however not suited for families with small children. The transport pickup was great from airport to hotel. The owner Dan is very imfortative and has alot of knowledge but I believe his staff left him down and take advantage of him when he is not around. I would also suggest that you don't book your tours through Tan as we were overcharged 2000 bht however again our fault for not checking things out ourselves before going ahead - you live and learn. The rooms are clean and tidy and spacious. The location is what created a problem for us having children however if you are looking for somewhere to crash this may suit you.

Response from KellysOwner, Owner at Kelly's Residency
Responded 26 Jul 2011
This reviewer I remember well a very nice family, he got scammed by one of the many local scams from pirate companies to price tailored half priced half trips, we can throw the tourists to the wolves by telling them to book their own tours, a lot do, problem is when it all goes pear shaped it’s our time wasted fixing it, so I give my 100 star service for free to try avoid problems, plus I put through thousands of tours and no commission as long as the tourist doesn’t get ripped off but look out if they do, all this I do for free is taken for granted not appreciated. When it comes to trips and tours its fraught with trouble especially in low season, high season there are less scams due to people paying full price and not so many people going broke and peddling cheap tours, to put all scams in here would take forever, plus new ones every day. This person ended up on a half price tour that was put through a travel company by a staff member that didn't know and not someone I use, it’s all about commissions that I don’t take, he paid for a full tour and ended up on a boat with cheap skates that wanted cheap and got cheap a half price half a trip, not a full trip common practice here, a low season scam to cater for el cheapo, unfortunately this customers found out the hard way and it happened to nice people, and a lot of the time that is how we find out, I wish the 99 % of the customers we helped would write about their wonderful time and money saving experience very few do, we only get to hear of the 1% isolated incident and this is one of those unfortunate 1% of times but a fact of life. Same thing happens with taxis if all doesn’t go to plan they want to rip a strip off of us, not clever as we order thousands a year 98% of the time it works, and then lots of thing can come into play, to many to mention, we do put all the reasons on web site. If someone can find the perfect world let me know so I can move there.. I find these reviews don't often tell the whole truth up to the time you got scammed you loved the place, and to mark as bad, rooms, service, price and the bit about not suitable for kids is only your opinion after getting upset, not really true we sell quality rooms way above the price charged and my service is 100 star for free, you can have a free week if you can find better, and we don’t charge for 10% service fees and 7% taxes its inclusive, and the plus plus on top of bill on check out we don’t have, Kelly’s hotel is private run not a corporate impersonal money making machine, we’re very personal and Kelly’s is all about honesty and integrity, and that’s rare in today’s me me world.. Unfortunately low season is mean season and trips are tailored to price, this is caused by the tourist forever pushing prices down, so the cheap trips rear their heads, to blame us is not on because of pirate companies going broke, I hear about dud trips all the time, and most cheap trips are a scam of sorts, we have a system we use to mainly control this and yes the staff was chasing a commission but also got scammed, that’s life.

Hello fer02030,
About the breakfast, yes they serve and as I can remember, they charge 250 Baht. I can't tell you what menu they serve coz I didn't had breakfast when I was there. I'm still snoring while people are eating. I always woke up late, so I never had breakfast for many years.
Anyway, here's a choice:
(1)You can request inclusive breakfast upon your booking, which ofcourse normally you will pay for little extra charge to be topped up on your room rate charge.
(2) If you booked exclude breakfast, and you change your mind to have breakfast when you're there, you can inform the reception in advance(a night before) so that they could put you on the list of diners... so the next day you can have breakfast... on the rooftop, nice view. It's up for you to decide.
Hope this advice helps. Goodluck. God Bless.
Truly Yours,
Shernan L.
