At the border of the rainforest lies this jewel for nature lovers. Great place for hikers who love birds, insects, medicines plants and beautiful flowers. All basic facilities are available as well as warm showers in the spatious and airy 4 new built rooms. Great food, served on large terrace from where you have fantastic bird panorama. Very good luchpacket and drinks always available, rooms/beds very clean. Overall very friendly family who likes to share their lives with nature lovers. The grandson picks you up and brings you back to a meeting point because the place is only accessible by jeep.

We have experienced this place many times. The view is excellent and just hanging around the open area gives one a real opportunity to view and photograph so many endemic birds and other small mammals. It is a base from which you could move around and experience a hike and enjoy the flora and fauna.

I first visited the lodge after a morning tour of the National Park, and while the rest of my group carried on in the park after a super lunch - provided by Martin's relative (daughter?), I was invited back to the lodge to rest. I sat mesmerised by the birds flying by and visiting the bird feeder, plus monkeys nearby, and was treated to a huge pot of Sri Lankan tea! The next day I persuaded my group to stop for refreshments at the lodge, as a thank you to them for their hospitality. We had tea, coffee and biscuits and were made very welcome. Although I didn't stay overnight at the lodge, the toilets are in one of the (then unoccupied) guest's rooms, so I saw inside the quaint, rustic building. A 'loo with a view' is an understatement as I watched fly-catchers and monkeys through the perspex window. If our hot picnic lunch served at the National Park of curry, rice, dhaal, popadums, spicy coconut, and many other dishes, followed by fruit and yoghurt, was anything to go by, the food at the lodge would be superb!

A couple of days while our group was bird watching in the Sinharaja Rainforest we spent an hour or so each day having lunch and relaxing at Martin's Simple Lodge Restaurant area. The meals were hand made for us as we waited and were a very basic Sri Lankan affair, although I kind of liked this relaxing atmosphere. I can see where a lot of people would give this lunch a one or two star, but having a few locals whip up a meal for you was pretty awesome. It felt nice, as though you were in someone's house for a lunch. Definitely nothing fancy (if that is what you want do not come here) - reservations are probably required... A very basic but very traditional Sri Lankan meal.

We tried to stay at Martin’s Lodge but it was full so we stayed in the overflow 5 minutes from the ranger station and 30 minutes from the gate. I was initially unhappy that we were not staying in the lodge itself and that had not been explained to me by the company that booked for us. But I have to say that staying at Martins house was very nice. Our room was actually nicer than the rooms in the lodge, newer, cleaner, bigger and we had hot water. Martin was in the hospital but his daughter and son in law took excellent care of us. The food was whatever we wanted, how we wanted it cooked. The drive up to the park gate was actually good birding and we went one morning to a village that had frequent sightings of the Sri Lankan spur fowl. We saw it. I will say I missed the eating area at Martin’s Lodge. We ate lunch there one day and birds came right up with excellent lighting that was hard to come by in the rainforest. Some of our best pictures were in the hour we ate lunch at the lodge. Note both the lodge and the overflow at Martin’s home are very simple lodging. They are clean and basic. Don’t come here with higher expectations. This is very far from luxury.
