Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel was close to the train station and had easy access to some local shopping and restaurants at the nearby shopping center. Rooms were clean. Breakfast buffet was excellent in terms of food and value. Staff very courteous. Metro not far away but did not adventure there.

In the center of Datong, just across the street of the train station. Old state hotel, just a block of concrete. Nothing spectacular, just a place to sleep. Awful rooms, filthy bathroom and noises of traffic all through the night. But hey, after 6 hours by train you will sleep anywhere. Breakfast was average.

We had the pleasure of staying at this hotel and were really impressed with what they had to offer us. We were given a room upgrade at check in which was greatly appreciated. The room we were given was excellent. The king bed was very comfortable. We had the choice of a shower or bath again both very good. The size of the room was a lot bigger then you would normally get for the price. The staff were great and went out of their way to make sure our stay was memorable. Most of the front reception staff can speak English with some capable of speaking very good English. This is a luxury for western travellers trying to bridge the language barrier. Overall our stay was great and we have no hesitation recommending this hotel to prospective visitors to Datong.

If you are on your way to the Yungang Grottoes or the Hanging Temple at Hengshan mountain and you need to stay in Datong, than the Hongqi Grand Hotel is very convenient. It is next to the train station and max an hour drive to either the grottoes or Hengshan mountain. It is comfortable, clean, has a reasonable sized room and a really nice restaurant. At the same time it is also unremarkable and impersonal and a hub for many tourists. CITS (China International Tourist Service) is just around the corner and they can book your trips if you don't feel like taking a bus - beware they don't overcharge you. Good value for money.

Wasn't impressed with this Hotel. The only thing it has going for it is it's close proximity to the station, which also happens to be what it has going against it: The station is very noisy and the racket starts very early in the morning. I can still hear the sound of the automated loudspeaker message which just endlessly repeats over and over again... Old furniture in the room and breakfast was only luke warm.

This was the worse hotel we've stayed in, also the location was not great allthough on walking distance from the railwaystation which was convenient cause we arrived by train. The breakfast was okay, but still I wouldn't go there again.

Hotel is next door to the train station, very convenient. Room was clean and comfortable, we were happy with it. Staff was friendly, and let us store our luggage for the day. No frills but a good value.

We stayed 1 night at this hotel, in a Standard Room which included breakfast. The room was basic and clean, but carpet needs replacing. We didn’t smell any smoke in the room. We thought the hotel was good value at RMB240 per night for 2 people and the food for breakfast and dinner was very good. We took a late flight from Beijing which was delayed and arrived at the hotel at 1:00am. The receptionist could not speak English and we paid the cost of the room and a room deposit and had to insist on getting a receipt for both, by using Google Translate. When we checked out the next morning, the staff at reception could speak English and they let us store our luggage in a locked room off reception until we left for our train journey to Pingyao that night. They have comfortable couches in the foyer where we sat after dinner until it was time to leave for our train. If you order beer in the restaurant make sure you ask for it to be cold; as we were served warm beer. The restaurant staff, except for one lady, do not speak English, but they have a picture menu. We chose this hotel for its location to the Railway Station and would stay again if we went to Datong.

this is the kind of hotel I had expected in China, old, grey, falling apart and with no service to speak of but this was our last hotel in a 21 days trip and the first to be like that, so now I was not actually going to be just satisfied with this as I knew now that China had wonderful hotels on offer for that price. Since we arrived late and were only going to stay one night I did not look for another place but I recomment you do!

We were there only for one night and arrived in the early morning by the Beijing train: that is the best point for this hotel... it's situated right in front of the Datong Railway Station. The employee did not speak english. We had to ask a taxi searching for clients to translate for us. Check in was complicated and Check out also. Room comfortable but with a strong cigarette scent and filthy floor. The beds were were the hardest we had in china, like stones litterally. Chinese breakfast, if you like it, i guess it was good. We had to struggle to obtain a toast per person. It's convenient and sufficient to stay one night or two but not more...
