I am in Shantou on business and stayed in this hotel last night.

It looks pretty impressive from the outside, and I was quite pleased with the room when I first entered. In the evening I did see a medium sized cockroach climbing up the wall (which was quickly despatched to hell by my shoe)

I ordered room service last night, which was a struggle as always in China. I ordered a hamburger and apart from being slightly brown on the outside, the meat was completely raw. Didnt bother to complain though, it's too much like hard work being a non Chinese speaker.

If anyone is into this sort of thing, at 10pm a rather attractive girl rang on my doorbell and offered me sexual services for 600 RMB.
She said she was from the hotel sauna. When I said no thanks she asked if I wanted another girl sent up instead.
I wonder if this happens to all male guests, or maybe the lady at room service REALLY misunderstood my order!

So anyway I went to bed (alone) and discovered it was quite hard (the bed, not anything else). This was disappointing as I had been looking forward to a good nights sleep. As it was I woke up at 5.30 am and didnt sleep again.

My room without breakfast was less than 500 RMB, but internet is extra and there are little irritations like no free drinking water available (you have to purchase a bottle from the minibar for 30 RMB - which is more than a bottle of Heineken!)

I have stayed in a lot lot worse hotels than this one, but I was just disappointed after my first sight of the hotel and thinking this was going to be a top class stay.

Service was pretty good though. And I don't mean the lady of the night, I didnt take her up on her offer, honest!

I spent only one night there, so I cannot review all amenities.
Definitely a 5 star when was built, now I will rate it in the lower segment of 4*. It needs renovation fast, starting from carpets, bed linen to the bath accessories.
Bad mattress is really hard, but surprisingly comfortable. Wifi works decent - no VPN preinstalled - so only china allowed apps.
Breakfast is Chinese, however anyone can find something to eat. Coffee not so good.
At -1 floor a good Chinese restaurant.
At 5th floor an interesting KTV which you could enjoy.

We stayed there on a very good value coach+hotel package from Hong Kong. Breakfast not included. Was impressed by the huge and elegant lobby. Non-smoking room was really free of cigarette odor. Room was well appointed, clean, quiet and very comfortable. Bottled water provided in the room was expensive so better buy elsewhere. There was daily charge for Internet connection. I was disappointed that there was no wifi which should be standard facility these days. TV really small. A very pleasant surprise was FREE international calls if your room key envelope is red, but better confirm with hotel before use. The hotel has large sauna/spa facility. We had foot massage there at very reasonable price and service. The hotel is in a developing area of Shantou so there are restaurants and new establishments nearby. As mentioned by other reviewers the bed were quite hard but the quilts and pillows were very comfortable.

This hotel is an absolute disappointment, definitely no 5 star level. Old, smelly rooms with dirty carpets, almost no English speaking staff, loud karaoke singing well after midnight, several phone calls by prostitutes.

While the room rate was pretty good, they rip you off with everything else. Bottled Water in the lounge: 16RMB, bottled water in the room 30RMB!!! (And there is no complimentary drinking water) Tea in the lounge was 78RMB for 3 people, and we drank standard tea, not the super expensive stuff. Quite outrageous.

The bed was quite hard, and I had difficulty sleeping on it. The carpet was somewhat dirty. Overall, it was acceptable for the price, and it was convenient for the meetings I was attending. Just don't eat or drink anything in the hotel.

located in center of town, room size and amentities are good according USA standard. Chartered bus are available to Hong Kong or High Speed Rail Station. But I found the bus is more economical and better time schdedules. Shopping is across the street with Walmart and Starbucks.

The rooms are of a high standard, but have not been redecorated since the place opened in '99 - they are exactly the same, hence the complaints of some reviewers here. But it is not poor condition like others are saying.

What is of concern, is a lack of English staff on hand when you need them. There are a couple, but for a place with 500 rooms, two is too little by far.

The food here was a complete joke. The steak was so bad, the most painful part was that I had to pay for it. How can you get a steak wrong? Want a beer with your meal? Oh you will wait for that. You will likely have your sub-standard food long before you taste that beer.

The restaurant is typical of the mainland, one person on his phone talking to someone on the moon I expect, given the volume of conversation, another emptying the contents of both nostrils into the cloth, whilst another next to me needed a trough, rather than a plate to eat from. Guess I can't blame the hotel for this though.

But what I can blame them for, is internet performance that is SO bad, that I wasn't able to effectively work during my stay. I did some digging and found they have a mere 100Mb/s link, for a 500 room hotel. What penny-pincher came up with that decision I wonder...

Another downside I noticed, was that the wonderful 'Rocky Lounge' in the basement, which had live music, dancers, great bar etc, is now a parking lot. What. A. Shame. I guess they had no choice as the area around the hotel, which was once sparse when the place was built, is now metropolis. Indeed, the area is almost unrecognizable after so much time...

So Regency - improve the quality of the food, and the internet, and I'll be back.

This was my second stay at Regency, I will try the Sheraton next time. Room was clean and well appointed, however service was not acceptable. While checking in, the front desk staff tried to pre-authorize my credit card (standard) and FOR SOME REASON, tried to enter my card PIN themselves three separate times. This locked my card rendering it useless for the rest of the trip. I needed my Mandarin speaking host to explain this error to them, so do not have high expectations for English communications. The breakfast buffet is in the open air lobby with decades old banquet chairs and average quality food.

The rooms at this hotel are very outdated. The carpet in the rooms is disgusting. The non smoking rooms smell like smoke and the bed is like sleeping on the floor. Very little English is spoken at the hotel. The buffet is 100% Asian unless you want spaghetti for breakfast. When you arrive you will notice the beautiful lobby, but don't be fooled. That is where it ends. Do yourself a favor and stay elsewhere.

The staff of holiday are friendly. The location is convenient especially when you travel by coach from Hong Kong. In house restaurants serve good eastern and western cuisine. One of the hotels that value for money.
