We booked the top floor apartment with the balcony. The views of old town, Lokrum island and the port were so good we generally preferred to enjoy our evening meals on the balcony rather than busy restaurants in old town.
The apartment was fully equipped with crockery and cooking utensils, with multiple shops nearby to stock up on supplies for your stay.
The accommodation is run by sisters Ofelia and Oktavia, who have apartments on the property. Communication both in the lead up to and during your stay is fantastic. You are given their contact details on arrival so should you need anything they are just a message away. You will be left in peace to enjoy your stay, and they will only come into your apartment to replace towel etc if you request them so ideal for travellers that like to keep to themselves.

On arrival, it was difficult to find the hosts, which was a continual problem through the stay. There is no manned reception/ check-in. A neighbour was able to direct me and helped me with looking after my luggage while I climbed stairs to find the place.
I located the owner, who was nice and gave me a sheet map of the town and took payment, which must be upfront in cash. I found out later why..
The apartment is run down and grubby. It is very 70's and a lot smaller than I could have imagined. There is no soundproofing and little privacy.
No bath and the shower handheld, very muchnot what I saw at booking. It's pretty difficult to wash your body and have very little chance of washing your hair. The shower runs cold after a few mins.
Towels are just over the size of a hand towel and not able to fit around you. (I'm a standard size small clothing)
Shelf slanting above the bed, so do not put anything on it, or it will fall on you. The shelf is at head height, so care must be taken not to hit your head, too.
No dishwasher or freezer, just a fridge plus sink as the kitchen.
There are no side tables or plugs near the bed. It is possible to use the chair if you pull it over if you need a ledge for your belongings.
The bed was made but did not feel clean.
Smell in bathroom from the drains means window must be open to make it managable to go inside (the whole apartment stank of the bathroom drains) you do get all the bugs if you open the bathroom window plus neighbours have a clear view of you in the bathroom so no privacy to wash or use the bathroom. There is only a very light door separating the bed from the bathroom, so the smell is awful in the room. I now understand why all windows were wide open when I arrived.
No safe in the room. I was handed a portable one on request, which utterly defeats the purpose.
It did not feel private as breakfast is served facing your apartment windows, so you need to close your windows and blinds for privacy.
Cleaning starts at 8.30am, yet our room was not cleaned.
Next door looks to be a children's pitches, so it's pretty noisy for early.
Room not cleaned during our stay, felt grubby, lots of ants too.
The positive was that the entrance looks really nice. There is also a small dip pool if the weather warms up.
We didn't enjoy the stay and would not recommend it. Nobody checked if things were okay during the stay, and we could never find anyone. We alerted them on mail of the problems, but eventually gave up and checked out and went to another hotel. No refund was offered despite an awful stay, but they did re advertise our room in seconds of us saying we were leaving.
Never again, hopefully others can also avoid.

This property has a bedbug issue, of which the owner has been made aware and does not acknowledge. My friend and I, and a previous guest (review below) stayed in the same room within 1 month of each other and received multiple (50+ for myself) bites. Photos attached.
Unfortunately I experienced a delayed allergic reaction to bedbug bites and so did not suspect anything during my stay and regrettably, did not inspect the mattress. My friend showed bites on the day we checked out after a 3 night stay, but as I didn’t have anything at the time we assumed this to be mosquito bites. The marks appeared on me 2 days later which I have been told rules out mosquitos and would most like be bed bugs as they are known for delayed responses.
The host has been made aware but the room is still available to book on booking.com (who have been zero help, and have in fact increased the upset around this situation).
Please do not stay here. It is not worth the stress and anxiety.
Pros:
None
Cons:
Major safety violation!!!!! Door can only be locked WITH the key from the inside- this is a fire hazard & would be an extreme code violation in the US. I cannot stress enough how unsafe this is. You would not be able to exit quickly in case of a fire! BTW my Dad was a fireman so I ran this by him also.
Apartment is very small.
Table was so small & “chairs” were 2 very small ottomans- otherwise no other place to sit in the room.
Obstructed view- we could see none of the city from our room
Playground next door- extremely noisy at times
Pool- very slippery as it’s a tile floor. If I had not been holding onto the handrail I would have fallen as I slipped on the tiles.
Villa Stairs up to our apartment did not have a handrail, were tile & were slippery when wet.
Bathroom was so small there was no place for a toilet paper holder! In addition, when going to the sink from the toilet, you hit your toes on the shower.
Up a LONG flight of stairs- we knew that but didn’t realize how difficult this would be with luggage. These are the City steps & do not belong to the apartment I don’t think. The steps are uneven, some broken, have no hand rails in most places, & extremely poor lighting especially at night.
Towels were very hard & not comfortable at all.
Owners not helpful. I asked her where a highly recommended restaurant on TA was & she said she never heard of it. OK I can understand that so why didn’t she take the time to look it up & tell us? I also asked her about the airport bus & she said it runs 2 hours ahead of flight times. Since we were taking a 6:30am flight & I had seen a bus schedule before we left & we were taking a domestic flight & not international, I didn’t think she was correct. I asked her to check it out for us but she never did so I went to the tourist office. Sure enough, the bus left at 5am & not 4:30am
Queen size bed however the top sheets were 2 single sheets & not queen size. There were also only 2 heavy blankets & nothing lighter. The heavy blankets were too hot even with the AC on.
Our porch was shared with the adjoining room.
“Living area” in their photos is for the family to use & not guests as it was always locked.
The owner told us to go to the beach. She didn’t ask what WE wanted to do. That’s not what we wanted to do.
Bottom Line: go elsewhere! The major safety violation was enough for me to give it a poor review without all the other problems.

The Accommodation
Villa Gloria is in a fantastic location, 5 minutes walk from the east end of Dubrovnik old town (the Pile gate). Be aware that these apartments can only be reached by climbing a significant flight of quite steep steps. That means you will have to carry your luggage up and down and anywhere you want to go means a trip up and down!

There are a number of apartments and rooms available, ours were very clean and reasonably well maintained (some paintwork could have done with attention but otherwise fine). Hand and shower towels were provided. We booked by email (emails usually received a very quick response) and even though this was quite a time in advance we weren’t offered a choice. We stayed a week but I suspect most people are there for short visits; it is cheaper if you book 3 nights or more. No deposit was required but we did confirm by email a week or so before that we were still coming.
The room (used by one person) was in the main building where the family live and was pretty standard, en suite with a kettle, fridge, TV and air-conditioning.
The apartment (used by two people) was also in the main building. It was a bigger room with separate bathroom and a door opening on to a very pleasant terrace (table and chairs provided) overlooking both the old town and the sea, with fantastic views of both. There was a small kitchen area containing a fridge, sink & drainer and two-burner bottled gas stove. You wouldn’t be cooking many (any?) meals here though. Ironically, because we had a stove we weren’t provided with (and were refused when we asked) a kettle, which was slightly inconvenient – maybe their gas is cheaper than electricity!
The apartment was somewhat idiosyncratic so don’t expect luxury. For example, we were provided with two single sheets and two single blankets for our double bed!
Other apartments are lower down in the small complex so, while we didn’t check them all, they are unlikely to enjoy such fantastic views as the ones that use the terrace in the main building.
There are two bakers and a supermarket in the space between the apartments and the Pile gate.
Arrival & Departure
The airport was fine but the buses to and from Dubrovnik were pretty useless.
I would suggest that unless you fly Air-Croatia (buses apparently meet these flights) you should resign yourself to a taxi (about 250 Kunas - £30). There were fixed fare notices but the taxi drivers (we asked in advance) just said they would be using the meter and it would be around 250.
We showed our driver the address and after asking some of the others he dropped us right at the entrance to our apartment steps. The entrance is on the right just before the Eurocar and Hertz offices on the road running up to the Pile gate, but if you end up at the taxi rank it is only a short walk back.
We also took a taxi for our flight home (there is a rank just by Pile gate). We did see a couple of buses arrive at the airport once we were there, but we failed to work out where they went from or the times. We had the impression that the taxi trade is living on the airport run so there is little incentive to provide alternatives.
The City
It’s beautiful and there is a lot to see. It gets very busy between 9.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. with day trippers from cruise ships and coaches. We did the walls early (excellent) but they were still busy by the time we were halfway round. The large numbers of restaurants have largely standard menus and pricing; the food was generally good but we felt there was a lack of variety.
Beaches
There is a “public beach” (pebbles, not sandy) just below Villa Gloria which is fine for a swim or a seat by the sea. On the far side of the old town (outside the Ploce gate) you can work your way down to a couple of coves where rock bathing is good and we enjoyed snorkelling. There is good rock bathing on Lokrum island (easily reached by ferry from the old town harbour).
Diving
This wasn’t intended as a dive holiday so we only did one day / 2 dives. Some of the centres in this area are more about banana boats than diving so we went with Aquarius http://www.dubrovnik-diving.com who are a full PADI dive centre and were excellent. We didn’t learn much from emails from the UK but we phoned them while in Dubrovnik and they were very helpful.
They are based in Mlini, seven kilometres south of Dubrovnik which can be reached on the number 10 bus (twice an hour) but they picked us up at a cost of 10 euros each way (this was for the journey, regardless of the number of people).
We rented equipment from them which was fine, unfortunately the wind prevented us doing some of the more interesting dives on offer (such as the Taranto) but we had a couple of pleasant dives. The boat is great - so much room and we enjoyed the lunch on board. Refreshingly they didn’t lead the dives, they gave a briefing then left each buddy pair to plan and navigate their own dive.
Overall
As a first trip to Croatia, being right by Dubrovnik all week was a great way to see the city and the accommodation was in a fantastic location.. If we returned we would probably stay somewhere more relaxing from where we could visit Dubrovnik (maybe just up the coast on the Lapad peninsular). We enjoyed our week despite the weather being mixed (it was bad over most of Europe) and it really was worth seeing Dubrovnik.
Recommended Guide Books
Visible Cities (Annabel Barber) - really excellent, in depth information and walks around the different quarters of the city, away from the hub, but with lots of history, as well as information on the main attractions.
Bradt City Guide (Piers Letcher) A very useful little book, packed with useful info and tips. Informal writing style, pleasant to read.

When we arrived at Villa Gloria, Ophelia was at the entrance to meet us, and she and Igor (our driver and brother-in-law of Ophelia) insisted on carrying our cases down a number of steps! The welcome was outstanding, everybody involved in the Villa Gloria are very friendly and welcoming; nothing was too much trouble, and all requests were met 100%!!
Although there are quite a few steps to the main road (not really suitable for anyone with mobility problems), it did not make any difference; from the base of the steps, you turn right, walk 5 minutes (if that!) and you are in the old city, and turn left with the same distance to Banje Beach! Although the beds are quite expensive on the beach (100kunas for the singles and 300kunas for the doubles), they were very comfortable, especially the doubles, which we had as a treat on our last day. Because there is so much to see and do in Dubrovnik, we only spent 2 days on the beach.
We would recommend an island/boat trip, and also the cable car - so both worth it for the views and the experience!
Back to the Villa - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dubrovnik, and would not hesitate to rebook the Villa Gloria when we return. You can book directly with Ophelia via there website; if you email any questions/requests to Ophelia, the response is very prompt!!!
Wherever you are in the area, the views are unbelievable, especially from the terrace, which was shared with next door, but this made no difference to us!
I cannot recommend the Villa Gloria enough and would like to thank Ophelia, Sasha, Octavia, Igor, Tessa and anybody else I have not mentioned at the Villa - WE WILL BE BACK!!!
