#17 of 46 hotels in Iquitos
LA CASA FITZCARRALDO, birthplace of the Werner Herzog films Fitzcarraldo & Aguirre, offers an unique and unrivaled housing and jungle oasis Whether you are coming to Iquitos for volunteer work, a jungle adventure, a medicinal Ayahuasca quest or just to get away from it all, we offer like-at-home accommodation , including the naturally cooled swimming pool without chlorine, thanks to ECOsmarte, the most advanced pool water treatment technology on the planet . If you are already in Iquitos, we are open from nine to six daily. Come enjoy our great food, drinks, & lounge about, even in our impressive four-level treehouse with panoramic views and great sunsets. A dense and diverse arrangement of indigenous plants and plenty of orchids highlight the property. Birdwatchers are often impressed with the species they come across, especially up top our tree house. At night you can hear our jungle chorus, unlike any hotel in Iquitos-Peru.

The restaurant has an air conditioned room which is a relief,(and rare in Iquitos). Breaded alligator, grubs, and some type of jungle rodent (not cuy) are available if you're adventurous. The steak is pretty good and their homemade pesto spaghetti was my favourite. Great selection of healthy juices and smoothies too.

We spent one night at the La Casa Fitzcarraldo hotel, which had more of a feeling of a guest home than a hotel. We chose the hotel because of the history in the making of the movie Fitzcarraldo movie. In fact, we met and spoke with the owner of the hotel, Mr. Walter Saxer, who was the film producer for the movie, and a director. He was a wealth of information regarding the making of the movie and an interesting man to speak with. There were also photos hung outside by the pool, of the people involved in the making of the movie. The hotel/guest home is located in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Iquitos, but once inside the doors to the property, we were surrounded by a lovely garden and trees, leaving behind the noise of the city. The hotel had a lovely looking pool, although we did not swim in it that evening. We were able to order a dinner at the hotel, which was delicious, and Pisco Sours which we came to enjoy on our Peruvian trip. Of note, there are several pictures of a monkey on the property, that we noticed in the website, but when we asked, they no longer have any monkey. We stayed in the blue room which apparently Mick Jagger had stayed stayed in during the original making of the Fitzcarraldo movie. The bed was comfortable, although we wish we had requested another couple of pillows, as there were only two old pillows on the bed. The towels were also a bit old-looking and frayed on the edges, but they worked. The shower was large in size and had good water pressure. There was a small refrigerator in the room with cold water, soft drinks and drinks for sale. While there seemed to be some noise initially, from a nearby party or people at the bar area, all was quiet after 10, and we heard no city noise, even with our windows open. Breakfast was included and was filling. There was also a very friendly black lab, who very much enjoyed our attention and treats. The only challenge that we had experienced, was in making our reservations at the La Casa Fitzcarraldo. I had sent several emails in both English and Spanish, requesting a reservation and with some questions, but did not receive any response. We finally used Expedia for a reservation, and did not have any issues when we checked in. We are grateful to the lovely staff for their hospitality when we were there, and the delicious dinner.

La Casa Fitzcarraldo ist a place of peace and joy in Iquitos. Iquitos itself is loud and dirty. Entering the hotel is a pleasure. Around the nice pool it is super green. There are big trees, palm trees, blossoming bushes, birds singing, ... you feel like getting a glimpse how paradise could be. Even the noise from the street ist almost gone. The food in the restaurant ist fresh and tasty, staff is super friendly, the rooms offer lots of space and a solid interrieur. The bathroom is very clean. The hotel breaths history of famous film Shootings. I'd say if you were in Iquitos and did not visit Casa Fitzcarraldo you haven't been in Iquitos ;) Oh, and of you have the chance to meet the owner Walter Saxer in the evening for a glas of wine, some fascinating stories and philosophical conversation, don't miss that chance!!!

This is a very personal resort - the grounds, its theatrical history, the choice of music, the treehouse all sigh "life project" not corporate investment. Thus its charm. After bouncing down the dusty Avenida la Marina in an autotaxi (tuk-tuk) you'll suddenly stop at the nondescript entrance to this hidden surprise. Inside, however, classical music wafts through the palms around the pool. The polite, able and friendly staff tend to this lush, cool if overgrown resort and its stream of intrepid travelers. Walter, the owner & charming greeter, welcomes jungle adventurers home from a day on the river. He has created a quiet, charming if overgrown respite from the chaos & filth of Iquitos -- a noisy mercantile hub in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon jungle. The Fitzcarraldo's charm is from last century -- Klaus Kinsky, Mick Jagger & Werner Herzog all resided there while filming "Fitzcarraldo" and "Aguirre, the Wrath of God. Have a beer with Walter (the entertaining executive producer of those films) at the bar and ask about the photos of him with film crews on the walls.
