Detailed Reviews
A brief stay, nice breakfast, easy for transport, walk to East Coast beach, buses easy to city, pleasant staff and large room. Small pool but was quiet so it was relaxing. Plenty of good local food places walking distance nearby and try the great gelato place, Bird of Paradise.

Overall, it is a good cosy small hotel ideal for small family to get away on the weekends. Prices are reasonable. For those without personal transport, might have abit of a problem though there are buses available.

Convenient with MiMi Marts and local restaurants around. Bus stops both sides of the street are located in front of the hotel. Six bus stops to MRT Circle Line, which can connect you to the Central area of Singapore. Good at the reasonable price.

We flew in at extremely early hours of the morning and were exhausted. The staff greeted us with umbrellas to get out of the taxi as it was raining, and took our bags up to our room for us. They even offered to extend our check out because of how tired we were. Extremely great customer service. Room was very clean and nice decor. The shower had great water pressure and aircon worked splendidly. Our adaptor wasn’t working so they offered theirs for us to borrow. Breakfast in the morning was very filling with a lot of variety to choose from. Would definitely recommend this place! 10/10

Reasonably priced. Good facilities - DVD player, wireless network accessible across the building, fridge, kettle, sheets changed daily. Budget hotels normally do not provide any of these, but these are the bonuses provided by Santa Grand.
However, wireless network was unreliable. The place was under some form of renovation in Sept 06 and drilling took place as early as 9am even on Saturdays!
Customer service was decent in Sept 06, but seemed to have deteriorated toward the end of the year. Called to book a room in Dec 06 and guess what I got? Read conversation below:
Santa: "CAN YOU PLEASE CALL BACK IN A FEW HRS TO CHECK IF WE HAVE AVAILABLE ROOMS?"
Me: "Can't you put me down on the waiting list?"
Santa: "No. I don't know how to do it."
Me: "Are you trying to tell me I have to keep calling you every day at few hour intervals to check if you have available rooms?"
Santa: "Yes, because I don't know how to do a booking for you."
Lesson Learnt: Try booking via your agent if possible because those answering calls at Santa Grand seem to be idiots.

Called to enquiry the online booking. The service staffs talked to me in very rude manner. End up I didn't book. The first lady asked me loudly which hotel I refered to since they have 8 hotels in Singapore. It sounds like she got impatient with me and was scolding me.

Alone in a double room. 194 cm tall and with to suitcases.... totally full room. Not even space enough to leave suitcase open in room and be able to reach bed.
Smelly room...mold
Noisy next to elevator.
There is a lot of different options at same price in Singapore. My advice. Choose hotel elsewhere and grab a taxi if you need to go West coast.

good for a short stay, most of the time spent outside hotel. Room small, bathroom smaller, corridors narrow...no place to hang out...very good if you just want to crash at night. Breakfast not inviting at all, same setup all four days I was there. The biggest plus was the free smart phone with 4G, allowed me to cut cost on local calls and data

If you're looking for a cheap hotel near NUs which is perfectly no-nonsense yet provides very efficient service, I'd recommend Santa Grand, it is just off clementi road and has a good number of cheap restaurants next to it offering a variety of cuisines. The bus stop is just a stone throws away and Clementi, the nearest MRt station is a very convenient Bus No. 183 away!
The rooms are clean and well equipped, though not the most spacious. There is a very simple yet good free breakfast also available. The service is friendly too.
My only complaint is the lack of toiletries, there is no soap or shampoo- just 4 bottles of something whih is a 'hand AND body wash'!

I stayed at the Santa Grand when visiting the National University of Singapore during January 2012 - across Chinese New Year.
Reading some of the reviews on here, I feared the worse, but I didn't think it bad at all. In Europe it would easily pass as a 3* hotel. It wasn't cheap - $143++ per night normally, with a $20 or so surcharge for Chinese New Year, and I haven't really compared it for value for money with other places.
The good:
* the place is very clean, and my room was well-serviced each day
* the room was well-appointed, with most of the amenities you'd expect in a 4* hotel
* free wi-fi, worked well
* good bus service right outside the door, if you want the bus - 5 mins journey to the MRT
* 24-hour reception desk (I think)
* good-sized 7-11 nearby (not the tiny one right outside; go around the corner), and some local restauants, if that's your style (not mine).
Neutral:
* the hotel is well-located for NUS, or presumably for other West Coast business places; otherwise rather out of the way
* breakfast was just about adequate
* the room wasn't large, but I've stayed in smaller places
Bad:
* there was a certain 'cheap' feel about the check in/out process (only condescendingly not charging for early check-in, suggesting I leave the card-key at reception when going out, to avoid a $30 lost card charge, having the maid check the room before I could check out?!)
* noisy fridge in my room
* 'wet room' bathroom - difficult to avoid wet feet after shower; drain gurgled constantly (tip: put two towels over it to muffle the sound)
