Detailed Reviews
Just finished a week at Hotel 1888, and it worked out great! I cancelled my next booking at a higher end hotel and extended for another two weeks because it has been so good. The staff is great, place is clean, neighborhood is both touristy and local, and location is very central to many things (food, night life, and trains). It’s an old building, but that’s OK. The rooms are clean but basic, and that’s OK since the price point isn’t too high. The bed is unusually comfortable for Asia, so that’s an unexpected plus.
So…..while I have enjoyed my stay and look forward to another two weeks, objectively I have to point out something doesn’t bother me but others might want to know: the bathroom situation is a little off. In Asia, the plumbing vent is always in the bathroom, not running up to the roof like we have in the West. So when you run the shower or flush the toilet, you can hear it draining through a grate in the bathroom floor. In newer buildings, this is no problem. In older buildings, you get the occasional toilet smell in the bathroom. Must be a design flaw in how the water is trapped, not quite sure. It doesn’t come up all the time (I have seen much, much worse), but it does occasionally smell a tiny bit like a public toilet. Flush twice for better results. Also – there doesn’t appear to be a hot water heater for the building. So that results in 60-90 seconds of hot water in the shower, then it gets cold. No exceptions, happens every time. Wait a few minutes between 90 second showers and you’ll get a little more hot water. Fortunately, it is always summer in SG so no worry.
That’s all, carry on.

Came back for another stay because I really enjoyed my previous one but it was a nightmare this time and will very well be my last. When I checked in in the afternoon, I informed the lady that if my friend were to come, I'd get him to check in as well since I was unsure at that point.
My friend only came at 11pm and a different staff at the front desk asked for my room number and said that because my friend was not registered, hence a visitor, should not be allowed in after 11pm. I might have missed out this rule, my bad. He graciously gave us 5 mins while we had a full takeaway meal in our hands. :-) He proceeded to ask for my friend's NRIC and asked to fill in the declaration form (the exact process as when I checked in earlier). So I casually asked, if he's not staying for the night, he has to do this same process as well? The staff said yes, so we did accordingly. So I asked the staff again, since he already has his particulars taken and filled the form, can he stay later than the gracious 5mins he has given us? He said no. And I was just so bewildered. I asked him why he couldn't just check my friend into the system and he said because I didn't inform anyone (I did) and that I asked if my friend needs to have his particulars taken down if he's not staying - which he then accused me of "keep changing my words". He was so defensive throughout and not hearing me at all. I was not even trying to manipulate the system or rules.
I was genuinely curious and my point was, if he had already taken all the information he needed, couldn't he have just registered my friend into the system so my friend then has the option to choose if he wants to stay 5 mins, 3 hours or through the night? Rather than accusing me of "changing my words". He was not even listening to my theory and after a few exchanges with him raising his voice and being defensive, he reluctantly said he'll check my friend in then. This could have been solved way faster and easily in my opinion. I work in the hospitality sector and has had my fair share of work experience in hotels and this was just such a turn-off.
Everything else was great but too bad he made it such an unpleasant one.

stayed here for 1 night. woke up a few time as the aircon stopped by itself during the night. it was suppose to be a staycation to relax but in the end i felt so tired. on check out day, lights n aircon automatic off by itself a few times (almost once every hour) and i have to keep getting out of bed n switch it on. Gave my feedback to reception staff, they just apologise and that’s it. Do not feel any sincerity in his apology. Totally waste my $$... understand it’s 10m2 room but it’s too small even without luggage. but overall location is good. room is clean.

I did a 7 day home isolation at this hotel in January 2021. Great location, good room with good queen size beds, nice hot standing shower. I was fortunate to be in a room with window. Good views! Best of all-- projector TV with some international channels too!
The best part of my stay is the services. The Staff are well trained and forthcoming to ensure you are very comfortable. When you have any requests, the speed in reverting to you in amazing! On arrival late at night, the gentleman gave me good instructions of what is required of me, as I'm in Isolation; but gave assurance that whatever I need, and any food order I place, it will be delivered to me immediately. At one time, I opened my room door and asked the Housekeeping supervisor for some tea and coffee. I was told that they don't provide Tea. Upon his return, he gave me coffee ands tea. When I asked, he said he went to buy some! After 7 days, I was actually sad to leave "home"! Thank you everyone at Hotel 1888 for your fine and excellent service! This will always be my home away from home, whenever I'm in Singapore!

I think I am not alone as seeing other visitors who made reservation to visit SG but could not cancel their bookings due to the travel restriction imposed by Singapore Government to short term visitors. I am a bit of surprise and shock that the hotel still do not accept me to cancel my reservation even I cannot enter into Singapore under this force majeure situation. The Hotel 1888 not even considers to refund any money on a discount basis, which mean they take 100% of your money without giving you any chance to use their services!! Look like I will have to try and lodge a complaint to Consumers Association of Singapore and the Singapore Tourism Board and seek their advice.

The hotel is in the heart of Chinatown, close to excellent food courts and restaurants. We were there in the lead-up to Chinese New Year so the street markets outside were packed and there was a great atmosphere! (The only downside to this was that our taxi couldn’t drop us in front of the hotel.)
We stayed in a family room, which had 2 queen beds placed right next to each other. There was also a huge round bathtub and a bathroom with shower. The room was clean and modern and had good air con. There was also free wi fi, although the wifi reception wasn’t that good in our room. The room was up a flight of stairs.
We also stayed in 2 double rooms, which were very compact in comparison. The double room basically just fit the bed and a desk and fridge, with shower and toilet. Everything you need but in a small space.
Reception staff were really helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Went there staycation alone in the hotel . Walked in the room just to find out the house keeping didn’t clean the area very well , Mr Yong sang kept on apologising on behalf , very attentive and honest reception I’ve met so far . The company should provide more training to the staff in order for them to be more aware of what’s happening . Thanks to Mr Yong sang for the outstanding and fast service recovery . Definitely a rescue if it’s not because of him I’d be leaving the reviews with 1 star .

Hi, i had a 1 night stay from 23-24 November and i had an amazing stay there. We booked a family room that was able to accommodate up to 4 adults! We were greeted by the staff name Ben and i would like to thank him for compensating the late check in for us. Instead if 3pm, it had to be done at 4 pm due to some issue on the AC. Ben was giving a very good service and would like to thank him for giving us such as amazing experience for my friends and I
The room was amazing with the large bath tub and the projector, the bed was large and very clean. would definitely come back to this place again.
However, we were having some issues regarding the projector and the language was in Mandarin? i think and we had a hard time trying to connect to the wifi, tho the wifi speed was not that good.
Location wise was good, sitting in the heart of Chinatown.
I would like to leave a not for Ben for being so kind and accommodating to my friends and i!

We booked this hotel on the net as it had reasonable rates and looked ok in the ads. Little did we know how lucky we were to have found this hotel. When we arrived we were greeted by Edwin a cheerful and helpful fellow who added a lot to our stay, the Santa Grand Chinatown is a little gem, it is in the centre of Chinatown, the room we had was clean, comfortable and cool, as is the case with most rooms in Singapore is was small but well designed so you had all the room you needed. Everything you want to see and do in Singapore are within easy reach, 3 mins to the MTR, one station away from Clarke and Boat Quay, 10 mins from the Gardens by the Bay etc etc.. The streets surrounding the hotel are filled with market stalls, food stalls and restaurants, 3 mins away is the Chinatown Complex with a wet market, must see, on lower level, clothing and souvenirs on middle and food food food on upper level, there is a laundrette five minutes away beside the chinatown complex and a pick up point and tourist info centre for all Singapore tours etc also at the Chinatown complex
just adjacent to the Budda Tooth Temple. The hustle and bustle finish at a reasonable hour making for undisturbed sleeping. The staff were incredible and could not do enough for us. If you want five star go elsewhere but if you want to have a great time and experience stay here.

This hotel is very conveniently located, as Chinatown is one of SIngapore's must-visit ethnic districts anyway. Dining options abound, with both restaurants and hawker centers to cater to your tastebuds. Transportation is also a breeze, with the MRT station and bus stops located just 2 minutes away by foot. Cons - Small-ish rooms (Superior) & bathrooms.
Restaurant Tip : Walk around first when you're about to eat - there are numerous restaurants and stalls around the hotel, so be sure to check them out first. Maxwell Food Center (a hawker center) is also nearby, a must-try for that Singapore hawker food experience.
