Overall I would say I really like this place and we'll use it for other visitors in the future. However, since the hotel seems to be run as more of a hobby than a business I would caution overseas guests to call the hotel and get direct contact with a person (write down their name!) as well as specific instructions - including the house number! - to the hotel for taxi drivers.
The Chinese Lanterns hanging with modern touches of long tassels added a unique flare to a quiet neighbourhood.
Every morning, we had a good walk through the Botanical Gardens near the house. There air was nice a cool.
There were a few interesting eating places just a walk away. If you like breakfast all day, there is a place nearby called Hatch... serving all sorts of egg dishes. Next to that is a 24 hour eating cafe, serving up a variety of asian food.
The room was nice a roomy, and had a nice large TV with cable movies! There was so much to see and do in Singapore, we did not have the chance to watch any TV.
Our sheets were comfortable and we had 2 soft but firm pillows each. The toilets were kept clean and we have fresh towels. It was very convenient to get around to the city or just a short nice walk to botanical gardens. The weather was excellent for morning walks and we certainly enjoyed the quiet home. Our breakfast were substantial for us, and was delicious. Staff were very friendly and supportive.
We enjoyed the oriental antique decor and eclectic collection of personal/family items on display.
Would certainly return. Very relaxing.
When I booked the facility I got immediately the feedback to provide my credit card details. After I submitted all details nothing happened. I sent reminders, nothing happened. I called and after many failed attempts and long waiting time a pretty helpless receptionist picked the phone (my 8 years old daughter would be more talkative). This person promised me than to send a confirmation immediately. Guess what, nothing happened until I wrote a serious request for confirmation. We finally got the booking confirmation that the desired room is booked for the period we requested together with a description of the way to the Lewis Road (we have this all in written).
Unfortunately when I arrived with my family, tired after a long flight, I was left helpless back in the lobby room with a strange feeling that something is going terribly wrong. No comment from the receptionist, nothing until I got serious (loud) and asked why I can’t see my room.
The receptionist, a shy and helpless person, talked to the owner outside in another room that we could not catch the situation, we were simply left ignored.
When I finally could talk to the owner I just a lapidary comment, that obviously something went wrong. No apology, no owner coming on site to talk with his frustrated guests, a completely unusual and for Singapore unexpected embarrassing situation.
Still today no apology from the owner (he has my e-mail), it confirms a hopeless lack of professionalism.
A taxi driver which came by chance along helped us to get a hotel. After all we wasted a lot of time, got frustrated and paid for the unexpected hotel we had to take a tremendous additional charge.
I am going to claim to the Singapore Tourism Board, such hostile behavior is certainly not in their mind.
We totally disagree however with the previous reviewer's comments regarding the area and places to eat. It is only 10 minutes walk to the MRT, along a busy but VERY SAFE road and area with wonderful eateries and a great super market! The Botanic Gardens are absolutely wonderful, open till midnight every day and a delight to visit at any time of day AND night which we did every day of our stay there. Public transport is fast, efficient and cheap and it felt great being away from the concrete jungle that is the centre of Singapore. We loved the area!
So would we return to L Residence? We would if it spruced up a bit and we would certainly return to the area, it was brilliant.
When one travels, one has to be prepared to explore the area on foot! Wear comfortable shoes!
Also, to use the MRT, you need to walk to the main road first and then take a bus. Botanic Gardens MRT is about 1 mile away! I am not sure why this is called ‘’walking distance’’ when clearly it is not… Because of this, we told staff immediately that we would stay only one night, and then moved to Swissôtel Merchant Court, which surprisingly was the same rate!
The plusses are that the house is a nicely decorated, the breakfast is good, staff is friendly (especially the Filipino housekeeper) and rooms are big. The minuses (in addition to the above) are that the rooms are very worn (this is mostly visible in the bathroom), many stains, brown marks etc. and it is not immaculately clean. A kettle is provided, but strangely enough no coffee or tea bags, sugar etc.?? Instead we found pot noodles and oats, but no fork or spoons??
When we checked in, we had to sign into a guest book and noticed that there were only a couple of names every other week or so… Also, we apparently were the only guests on the night we were there? I have the feeling the owners do not make this house a priority as a guesthouse. It feels as if it is just a guesthouse ‘’on the side’’. The rooms are in need of renovation and the whole place should be properly cleaned and maintained. Only when they decide to make the guesthouse their priority will travelers leave positive reviews. I am not surprised to see a mix of good and bad reviews about L Residence. For the price and in the state the house is now, I would recommend staying elsewhere.
Off the beaten track, me and my spouse chose the L Residence over the swanky, stiff hotels in Singapore.
The room we stayed in was big and clean, with an attached bathroom.
We were impressed by the size of the property, the tastefully decorated hall that leads to the many rooms in the villa. There is a nice size patio for you to unwind and listen to the birds and enjoy the sun. Yes, the owner keeps many feathered friends as pets in a little aviary, including Mandarin Ducks! How cool is that. There is even a basement swimming pool. We had the whole house to ourselves for most part of the stay (we stayed for 6 nights) and the experience was truely private and relaxed.
Breakfast is served everyday. The house keeper was helpful and available. Internet access available via WIFI FOC.
There is ample parking spaces to the property and you would need to have a car (or rent one) to make your stay more convenient. Situated at Upper Bukit Timah Road, you have easy and quick access to the highways (PIE,CTE,BKE) and 5min to hit the downtown.
I believe the owner allows booking of the hall for private functions and events/dinner. If one's house is not big enough to host such an event, this can be an interesting choice.
Overall, an incredibly unique experience which, as a Singaporean, I am not aware of until now. Book early to avoid disappointment.
For those who needs the pampering of bellboys, turndown services and hotel reward points can look elsewhere. Travellers with 70 pound luggage and full cartbag of golf gear to note: No elevators to the rooms at the 2nd and 3rd floor.
Again we liked the location, the help we got such as booking taxi, and the normal B&B benefits. My wife however was not happy about the condition of the bathroom... very simple and not very well maintained. We were trying to keep it clean but the whole bathroom gets messy very easily but difficulty to clean it up. Other inconveniences are no cups(holding our own toothbrush), no slipper(you will need them at least in bathroom).
I likely will stay there in the future but do have concern about the condition of bathroom there. Just wish the owner put more effort running this B&B or get some one with hotel or B&B training... particular when I recommend this even to my Singapore colleagues-:)
