If you absolutely MUST stay in Chungking Mansions (and I don't recommend it), then this hostel is the one you should stay at. Simon, the owner who lives in the hotel, is a great and friendly host. Adorable and accomodating, always ready to help. He keeps the rooms very clean and provides shampoo, conditioner, and soap. It is definitely worth the value of the money for an expensive city like Hong Kong. Chungking Mansions is in a great location, perfect actually, but full of seedy drug dealers, prostitutes, and touts. I would not stay here alone as a woman, I only felt comfortable because my husband was with me. In addition it's like a death trap if there is a fire because there is no fire escape and no where to go. However it's very cheap, and having stayed in other hostels in Chungking Mansions, I can confidently say STAY WITH SIMON!…
When I first arrived at this Hostel I was shocked. Entrance busy and confusing . Difficult to find. The Hostel itself is small as are the rooms. However I guess you get what you pay for. Location is very central, close to ferries. Tea making facilities available and free wi fi. Simon the owner is helpful and obliging. I wouldn't wat to stay for more than a few days because it's so so small. Environment noisy and smelly downstairs and in the building generally.
As others have commented, the journey up to the 5th floor isn't the nicest so if you've never stayed in a guesthouse in a less-than-glamorous area and aren't used to touts, you may want to avoid. You WILL have to wait more than 5mins for a lift at some point. However, the only bother were people offering other rooms and I never felt unsafe in Chungking mansion. I even came down the stairs at some point as the lift was full. Inside the place is well maintained and relatively clean for the budget. There was a strange smell in my single room but I think this was more likely to be from the Indian cuisine shops on the floors below. In general I'd give this a thumbs up for budget accommodation - I stayed an extra night. As has also been mentioned, Simon is friendly and actually lives in the place himself. At £33 a night you'll struggle to get anywhere near the quality in Hong Kong, especially this close to the centre.…
The building this hostel is in and having to queue to use the lifts was not the best, however, Simon was an Oasis. He was very helpful and kept our bags from checkout until we picked them up at 8.00 pm at night ! We really appreciated that, particularly considering his room was not much bigger than the hostel rooms. Room is tight in Hong Kong and these rooms reflect that. There was really only room for one person at a time on the floor space! I'm not sure that is unusual in Hong Kong. However, Simon has set them up remarkably well and we were comfortable. In fact, the rooms were set up better than some higher standard hotels. We even enjoyed hot water for a cuppa tea now and then. Joy. Everything is spotlessly clean and works well. We arrived quite late at night and Simon happily checked us in at that time. Instructions for finding the place were emailed to us. We were grateful for that as it is initially confusing. This place is brilliantly located; clean; great service and good for shorter stays.…
This is my first trip to Hongkong and i was not disappointed with this hostel as Simon is really helpful. Although the entrance of Chungking mansion is scary, it is relatively safe because you see security people roaming around. PROs - Hot water is available (both for drinking and bath), Aircon, Shampoo, Conditioner, Liquid Soap, and TV plus DVD player. Good location - its near the MTR station (Tsim Sha Tsui), near the iSquare mall and near the Avenue of the Stars. Plus they clean their rooms everyday so its really clean. It is not that noisy in our room. CONs - The room is small but i did not mind, because from what i see from other reviews, other hostels are smaller. The elevator is sort of a hassle because there is only one elevator serving for our floor and it can accommodate a handful of people. (Go to the elevator on the non business peak hours - 7am 8am 3pm 9pm 10pm 11pm - lesser people) But none the less my stay in Hongkong is great because of the location of this Hostel. I would definitely stay again in this hostel. Simon is accommodating enough. Although he seems not to smile but thats their expression there. TIP - get your money exchanged in the inner part of the mansion, its exchange rate is higher than the ones in the mall. And take the iSquare exit from the MTR. Its nearer to the Chungking Mansion.…
