I had previously been to China and stayed in a wonderful hotel, however it was very impersonal, and could have been anywhere in the world. This time I wanted to feel more like I was actually IN China, and the choice of the Red Lantern couldn't have been better. We stayed in the East Wing, in a twin room with...

We stayed in both the West and East Courtyards, both had their own charms. In the west courtyard there was more of a hostel feel about it. The rooms were divided between private rooms and dorms. We arranged train tickets and a trip to the wall through the reception and had breakfast here. There is a great atmosphere in the...

My son and I had an ensuite room in the West Yard for 5 nights and were very pleased with our stay. It was a five minute walk to the metro and there were local shops and resteraunts nearby, it is not a touristy area but the staff were very helpful in assisting us, they booked the acrobat show, train...

We usually stay in 5 star hotels when we go on holidays for the extra comfort but as we were travelling with friends this time we said we would go for the real Chinese experience at the red lantern hostel even though a top end 4 star hotel is only about 60 euros a night. We had the most amazing...

My wife and I stayed at the East House at the Red Lantern for over a week and we could not have been happier. It is owned by three brothers and you can feel the family atmosphere. First off, the place is clean - very clean. The staff is friendly and speaks intelligible English. They were very helpful and always...

The Red Lantern Hostel is divided over three locations. We stayed in the East Wing which is just a few minutes walk from the main building. The building had plenty of character and had its own restaurant which served good food with large Tsingtao beers for just Y4. Free wi-fi was available although it was quite slow at times. The...

I have stayed in many places in Beijing over the years and this one is the best value for money I have found so far. It is not luxurious nor boutique, but it is clean, relaxed and cheap for the capital. You can get fresh coffee and the staff are nice enough. I will keep using it.

This is really an unusually charming place for an hostel. Basic but well decorated rooms are all situated around the inner courtyard. Even if the volume is kept to a minimum at night it could be too much if you have a "light" sleep. Great lakes and hutong around the place, metro snacks and shopping street also nearby. Only cons...

There is no plush lobby, no TV set in each room, shower spreads over the toilet, sometimes hear noise from the corridor by other guests in morning, room is very basic, no toiletries, but, why people choose China to visit? Certainly for the Chinese antique, culture, its uniqueness, and here you are. I always wish to stay in Hutong to...

We stayed at the Red Lantern House for 4 nights and found it one of the most comfortable places we stayed in during our month long trip to China. We arrived from a long overnight train really early but the staff let us check into our room straight away which was really appreciated. We weren't in the main building and...
