After searching for 'luxury' and '5*' hotels of Mombasa, EnglishPoint came up and on the photos, looked very smart. So I booked a 2 night stay with my partner after 8 nights in Diani, en route back to Nairobi. I booked half board in a deluxe suite. The first impression was smart, nice modern place. Then we opened the electric blind to have a view of a large white building, a service road that we later found out to be for the industrial laundry and not much else. The laundry must have been directly above room 210. The buffet dinner was refused due to not enough people, instead a choice of soup or salad to start, 3 mains and a cake or fruit as dessert. The hotel is the wrong choice if you are a tourist, it is 100% a conference/meeting venue. We had to really challenge to get the slightest thing done.. The second night when the laundry machines cracked up again, shaking the room - enough was enough and time to complain again. Thankfully they turned them off after this. No rooms have a sea view, these are the 3 bedroomed apartments only. If on holiday, go and stay in a beach resort rather than this business hotel. Tremendously overpriced for no attention, bitterly disappointed.

We stayed for the second half of our Kenya trip at English Point for 10 days and had booked an executive suite. At first glance it looked really nice and I thought it to be a great choice. But on a closer look it turned out to be brushed up trash with terrible management. The executive suite comes with a complete kitchen, but everyting except the fridge is deactivated and your are told you are not allowed to use it. I don't need a kitchen in a suite, but if one happens to be there due to the layout/design, being told that you are not allowed to use it doesn't really make one feel welcome. One the first two days, we had to call maintenance almost hourly. The issues were: aircondition wasn't working - main unit had to be resetted In the children's room the wardrobe door derailed, almost falling on one of the children and making clothes unaccassible until maintance came hours later The safe's battery was dead and had to be replaced The switch in the shower which changes between handheld shower and rainfall shower was not working, water coming out of both shower heads. Despite having booked for 4 people, there were only two glasses and two cups provided. The matteress on the bed was thin and worn out, it had youth hostel quality at best, but no comparisaon to other upscale hotels. All in all little things that could be overlooked if the management had a different attitude. Nobody provided us with any information on the property upon check-in except for breakfast hours. The little booklet in the room that hotels usually have, providing information on the property and services was nowhere to be found, so we had to explore..... The pool had sign that pool hours were from 8.00 - 20.00, when we wanted to go swim at 18:20 a guard told us the pool was closed and the sign was wrong. So we went for a walk on the Beach, upon return we were told "we don't allow people on the beach after 18:30" - Is this a hotel or a prison? Everyday when leaving for a daytrip the guards asked "are you checking out?" and every time returning "what is you destination". Come on, know your guests, like other hotels do. On some days the kids didn't feel well and couldn't come to breakfast. Every time I wanted to take them a plate it ended up in discussion with personell "we don't allow food outside the restaurant" "we charge 1000 KSH room service charge".... Come on, I am not asking for anything I haven't paid for. I paid for 4 people having breakfast so when I am showing up alone, I should be able tro bring some to my family. Never had I experieced such issues in any other hotel where I had booked accomodation with breakfast. BTW, hoping for a hot shower is a gamble. In the morning, I didn't have hot water a single time. There is a sign to let water run for hot water, but even after 30 minutes, the water did not become hot. In the afternoon, you may have more luck and most of the time I was able to get a hot shower, but sometimes the water started to get cold half way through the shower.... maybe the neighbor turned on the hot water, whow knows? Finally at check out, I foud that they had double charged me 3400 KSH for room service (same amount, same ticket number, same time, just billed twice) Unfortunately I had only noticed after I had paid the invoice. They promised to look into it and contact me but until today noboday has contacted me or refunded my money. English Point - Never again

I know there are not many “new” properties in Mombasa and Covid was probably impacted this but over all it was an extremely subpar experience. If you are interested in Mombasa and Kenyan culture this property has none. The rooms were stripped down to no basic hotel amenities. The food was extremely expensive and had no cultural quality. The location and view are worth a visit. The prices are basically US resort prices. Other big executional problems like broken toilet that ran with smelly water all night. Hot water didn’t work at times. Service was very slow to get a beer. Chose this property if you need new, but expect the experience to be less than the many cooler “beach” front properties down the road. The front desk and restaurant manager did their best to remedy the problem which helped in the end. Hopefully it gets better as tourism returns.
